Mafia 2

Was one of the best games I've played this year.

Awesome ending. I loved everything absolutely everything about it.

EDIT: With all the extras completed and about half of the collectibles found i.e. playboy mags and wanted posters it took me exactly 11:17:22.

The Special Edition comes with some extra DLC. The PS3 has one exclusive DLC pack (probably to compensate on the appalling optimisation job they done) and there is still more packs to come so it should help in increasing the longevity of the game. The way I look at it is that the game is more similar to titles like Uncharted then it is to GTA or Saints Row. It focuses on the narrative in a more linear fashion but that doesnt mean it will be short and boring.

Glad to hear such positive impressions Mj.

You've hit the nail on the head there. Even though it is based in an open city, which is very much alive, the main focus of the game is in the storyline and it's excellent.

It really is that good. Aside from everything I've said above, what I also liked was that even though Mafia 2 isn't a direct sequel to the story of the original (if you've played the first, it's quite obvious why) there are parts that reflect back on the first game that I found amusing and the stories cross paths.

As I said above, the only negative I found was that game didn't seem overly difficult on some missions - especially when you compare it to the first game which had some really tough missions. But, if you fancy a tough challenge stick it on hard, the cops are very sharp and the AI of the enemy during missions is very tough.

Mj without spoiling obviously would you say the story and especially the ending in Mafia 2 is as great as it was in Mafia 1?

Ooh that's a tough one as I like both games for different reasons.

I have to say though, as much as I loved the first Mafia game I think I prefer the story in Mafia 2. Without spoiling anything or going into detail, I feel it covered a wider spectrum of life in the Mafia and had a lot more depth. Although the first covered similar aspects i.e. from your initial work in the mob to your initiation and beyond as a 'made guy', Mafia 2 focused more on your responsibilities as a 'made guy', the sacrifices you've made and the consequences in your life and those around you (both your family and friends) as well as those aspects. Mafia 2 reminded me more of Michael Corleone's story in the Godfather series than the first game did (the first reminded me more of Goodfellas and Donnie Brasco). Also, I guessed how the first game was going to end whereas the scene at the very end of Mafia 2 took me by surprise.

They missed a few there

Donnie Brasco, Casino, Heat, Carlito’s Way, LA Confidential

I have Millers Crossing as well and never watched it and i need to watch The Departed

Noticed quite a few missing, but that's the price you pay for having a top 10. Personally, I'd have Casino, Carlito's Way and Donnie Brasco in the top 10.

Edit: Coopz beat me to it. Coopz, have you seen Once Upon a Time in America?

Don't think LA Confidential is a gangster movie but its a crime one anyway :)

A Bronx Tale is meant to be good as well but i aint seen that either

Thanks man. Sounds great. :)

I have had a go on it and it is a very good game

The atmosphere of it all is just spot on from to the look of the city to the things going on it and the music adds to it all as well.

I have started it on hard as MJ said medium was a little easy and i haven't had no trouble yet but i'm not far in at all. Driving on Sim is good as well, just for the fact you have to concentrate more when your driving with it skidding and stuff rather than just going from A to B in boring no frills way

I dont wanna stop playing tbh, this is my kind of game :)

Oh yeah i forgot to add driving isn't as boring as well because you have to watch out for police cars all the time because if your going over 40 (60 on the highway) your gonna get chased

Nice thread this, Mafia was the GAME, i still remember the music, some missions and characters..it was amazing work by realy amazing czech game creators, who made the script just so real in this days i barely went out and i played it about 3 times after again...they made also Hidden and dangerous look very realistic to war experience to me...especialy HDII..some further missions was like walking in former czechoslovakia villages etc... i wish i can play mafia 2 someday :P

edit: i might install HDII now :D

No I didn't which I probably why I'm not feeling this. Trouble is, I need a game to last me longer than 8 hours. I'm having to pick and chose which games I buy much more carefully now and 8 hours just isn't good value for me.

Do what i do, buy it in a few months. Price will have dropped considerably by then.
Or by it on some 2nd hand trading website. We have something thats called (when translated) marketplace.com.

Its great for buying used games. I bought Red dead redemption for 36 euro's. New price was 59,99.

Yeah that's probably what I'll do. I'm sure Shopto will be selling this for £25 before too long.

With there not being much to do once the story is complete, there's going to be loads of people selling their release-day copies. Should be pretty cheap quite quickly I reckon.

The more i play the better its getting

The chapter i just did was brilliant

Getting arrested, going to jail (which both took me by surprise) and the actual walking into jail and the rest was very well done

I can see this game having a great storyline

edit:
Just got out of jail and as he's says alot's changed

I gotta get me a nice new car now :)

Does the game have stats to show exactly how long you've played for?

Just wondering how long it took MJ to finish the game.

Once upon a time in america and Miller's crossing are MUST WATCH films. Hope we can say the same for this game! I'm getting it tomorrow!
