The Jupiler League thread !!!!

A late update on the 16th match day:

02-12-2005 20:30 Anderlecht - AA Gent 3 - 0
03-12-2005 18:00 Charleroi - La Louviere 0 - 2
03-12-2005 20:00 Lierse - FC Brussels 1 - 1
03-12-2005 20:00 Sint-Truiden - Moeskroen 3 - 6
03-12-2005 20:00 Club Brugge - G. Beerschot 2 - 0
03-12-2005 20:00 Lokeren - Cercle Brugge 2 - 1
03-12-2005 20:00 Westerlo - Zulte-Waregem 2 - 2
03-12-2005 20:00 Standard - Roeselare 0 - 0
04-12-2005 18:00 Beveren - Racing Genk 0 - 2

Once again Standard drop two points against a relatively weak team.
Brugge win 2-0 after a bad match.
Anderlecht had a hard first half, butthey played pretty goood in the second half.
Genk is coming back.
Brussels draw (undeserved) 1-1 against the last in the ranking Lierse. Lierse should have had 2 penalties. The team is in a relegation battle and all goes wrong.
The clash between both surprise teams Westerlo and Zulte Waregem ends in a 2-2 draw. Very good match. Zulte Waregem is an amazing team: thesame coach since 1990. They have only one professional player, therest of the team are builders, students, teachers,...they only train at evening. And their trainer isn't a professional trainer at all, he is a highky ranked police man...amazing team...plays very simple and offensive football.

Oh and great news: Anderlecht finally won a match in the CL after 12 consecutive losses and that with a B-team and Kompany...Great match from youngster Tioté and from French forward Pujol...
Saturday they play Zulte-Waregem...

Yep, have to say I was very surprised with that one. Good goal though.

So my friend, who is the definite 'winner' the weekend? :)

FD

Stan keep me up to date weekly on Gregory Pujol's contribution to Anderlecht from now on.

I always liked him when he was a youngster like 21 in Nantes and thought he could become quite good but I guess he never fullfilled his potential and become anything special. Nonethless I still expect him to be a descent player although I couldn't watch Anderlecht's last CL match in which you say he played ;)

Good goal by Portillo...
Milanista, i have to tell you something...it may bother you that i don't like your team (or to be more accurate their president), but you seem a nice guy...so don't be offended by my rants against Berlusconi.

PLF: Pujol hardly ever plays..i don't understand Anderlecht. They transfer some players and they never play. For one player who was trasferred in the summer this is a fact. Anderlecht bougth Romanian CMF Mitu from Lierse where he was outstanding and he neve ever played...don't understand that. Well, after his great match in Sevilla Pujol maybe will get a chance. But Anderlecht already bought an Argentinian CF: Frutos.

Here are theresults of the 17th match day:

09-12-2005 20:30 G. Beerschot - Lokeren 2 - 1
10-12-2005 18:00 Zulte-Waregem - Anderlecht 1 - 2
10-12-2005 20:00 FC Brussels - Sint-Truiden 0 - 0
10-12-2005 20:00 Moeskroen - Beveren 1 - 3
10-12-2005 20:00 La Louviere - Westerlo 0 - 3
10-12-2005 20:00 Cercle Brugge - Charleroi 2 - 0
11-12-2005 13:00 AA Gent - Standard 2 - 1
11-12-2005 15:00 Roeselare - Lierse 2 - 0
11-12-2005 18:00 Racing Genk - Club Brugge 2 - 2

I'm rather sad...all is back to normal, i.e. Anderlecht are the new leaders. They have won the difficult away match in Zulte-Waregem. It was a freak win. Zulte-Waregem was clearly the better team but Anderlecht's winning goal was one of the most stupid i ever saw. Wilhelmsson placed a complete harmlees shot that ricocheted just before the keeper's hands and went in the goal. After the match Wilhelmsson had the flair and fair play to apologize to the Zulte-Waregem goalie.
Of course Anderlecht was helped by another Standard defeat...Standard are choking. All is not lost because the next match is Standard-Anderlecht and a win would put Standard on equal points with Anderlecht. Furthermore Standard is gonna buy a good player in each "line" in the mid-season interval. Portugese veteran defender Jorge Costa has already signed a contract for 18 months.
Brussels once again underachieved against relegation battllers Sint -Truiden: 0-0 simply isn't enough against such a team.
I saw the match between Racing Genk and Club Brugge on television. A great match. After a bad start due to many injured players, Racing Genk is back on track again and is currently the best playing team in the Jupiler League. They dominated Brugge completely but Brugge had an 100% score quota...Racing Genk have a deligthfull litle midfield player.Steven Defour is a 17 year old midfield player who has skill and vision. Ajax and Chelsea should be interested in him (but Chelsea is interested in every promising player in the world).

Standard has beaten Anderlecht in one of the big matches of the season. Standard were clearly the better team. Portugese Almani Moreira had a foot in both Standard goals. This makes the Jupiler League a thriller.
Halfway Standard have once again the lead on equal points with second placed Anderlecht. Club Brugge are three point behind the both of them.
Revelations Westerlo and Zulte-Waregem and Racing Genk are within five points of the top teams. Theoretically these six teams can become champions, but pundits expect a race between Standard, Anderlecht, Brugge and maybe Racing Genk.
FC BRUSSELS have won again. They haven't lost in seven matches, i can't remeber how long ago this has happened. They are currently 8th but this is too good to be true. During the mid-season transfer window they will loose their best player CF De Camargo. Teams like Rennes, OGC Nice, Vitesse Arnhem and Standard are interested in him...

Results of the 18th match day, the last before the mid-season break:

Speeldag 18 (17/12/2005 - 19/12/2005)
17-12 18:00 Moeskroen - Club Brugge 0 - 1
17-12 20:00 Racing Genk - Lokeren 2 - 2

18-12 18:00 La Louviere - Anderlecht 0 - 0
18-12 20:30 Lierse - Standard 0 - 2

This means that Standard are once again the only leaders. Standard have won against Lierse, while Anderlecht played 0-0 in La Louvière, once again proving that they have weaknesses in away matches.
Club Brugge are third after a win in Mouscron. They have a gap of three points to bridge with Standard.
Brussels have once again won with 3-1 and this after 2 superb goals by De Camargo in what should be his last match for them.

Standard have already bought 2 players: Jorge Costa and French midfielder Dembélé who comes from Votoria Setubal.

Anderlecht have brought Argentinian CF Frutos.

Well i just read that he will return to the Bundesliga.
He had problems with the club.
Germinal Beerschot (GBA) began the competition with high hopes (having won the cup last year) but they had a disastrous start to the season.
I saw him in the annual Super Cup match between Cup winners GBA and Champions Club Brugge. It was clear that he is a very talented player but after their disastrous start (they were last for some months) the club played very defensive and they never put him in the team.
After much problems GBA and Ozturk mutually decided to break his contract, i saw on GBA's website that he would most certainly play for...Nuremberg OPM...

Other possible transfers:

Tristan Peersman (Anderlecht two Willem II)
Dieter Van Tornhout (Club Brugge) on loan to Sparta Rotterdam for the reminder of the season.

Glad to oblige...
I still owe you one for the "Germany" thing in the World Cup thread...i was embarrassed and never meant any harm. I mean what i said about PES6...

PS: i also post on this forum as Stan...two different computers...

Gerd, I think our leagues are far more interesting than the other leagues, table wise. We have 3 contenders for the title, with quite a lot of unexpected results so far.
In Holland AZ played an amazing game this weekend. They're really a great team, I think they can even go far in the CL with this team.

I agree with you Joost, but i think that they are interesting because the general level is far lower (certainly for the Jupiler league, look at the results of the Belgian teams in the CL compared to the Dutch teams) than the big leagues. As a fan i don't care. It's true that it's more interesting when severalm teams can be champions than in England, Germany or Italy...

I have always been fond of Dutch football. There is a fantastic book about Dutch football: Brilliant Orange by David Winner.
It's one of the best football books i have ever read. There is this incredible story about Van Hanegem who could go to a big team (don't remember which one) and who received an offer while being on holiday with his team mate Wim Janssen. Van Hanegem discusses things with Truus but could not decide what to do, so afterwards Wim and Truus discussed the matter with Wim Janssen and his wife, but still remained undecided. In the end he let his dog decide for him (don't remember how) and stayed with Feyenoord. There are plenty of stories like that...

And about AZ67: great team but what happened with Stijn Huysegems, he hardly plays...does Van Gaal not like him...

I haven't read a lot of books about football. I've read the biography of Maradona and a great book about van Basten, about his period before the big fame. Up until '88 really.

Huysegems is doing ok Gerd, he has some tough competition in Arveladze, Perez and van Galen. Van Galen is suspended for 5 games and Huysegems replaced him in the first match and did a great job. It's quite possible won't return to the starting 11, which is terrible news for me, but great for Huysegems.

he signed a contract for the winter transfer window, he also had an offer from fenerbahce but wanted to come to bundesliga.

I hope he does well, because i rather liked him...GBA is a bad team and maybe he was too good for them. On the other hand, it could be that he is not an easygoing person...if the GBA coach talks the truth in our media, Nuremberg will have problems with him too...
Keep me informed about his progression...

Guys, some infos about Mathieu Béda?

just wanna know if he is a good signing for one of my teams oponents in relegation battle :)

Béda is a CB who played for two teams in Belgium.
Last season for relegation battlers Sint-Truiden.
This year for championship contenders Standard.
He played a very good first half of the season but Standard bought Jorge Costa from Porto. I guess the central defense will consist of Onyewu and Jorge Costa...
To wich team would Béda go??? I'm not sure if it would be reasonable isf Standard would let him go, he would be a good back-up for either Onyewu (already two red cards) or Costa...

stan, what is up with Gooch and red cards, do you know if they are desereved and how much have you seen him play, do you think he will be able to handle Luca Toni and Gilardino in the world cup, im sure he will handle Koller with an iron fist, im worried about the quick gila...

Gerd,

Anyone info on Anderlecht's Polish left-back Kramakow (sp?). Any good? Celtic are linked with him, just wondering.

Cheers mate. ;)

FD

FD, Anderlecht have no player of such name.
They have a Polish left defender however, his name is Michaël Zewlakow.
IMHO he is nothing special...Celtic should stay clear from him. But maybe Scottish football will suit him better than Belgian.

Hearts of Midlothian (Scottish clubs have the most beautiful names in the world: "Queen of the South") however have bought a very good player from a Belgian club (Racing Genk). Right Midfielder and Bosnian international player Mirsad Beslija is lightning quick, is an excellent crosser and scores quite regularly...(his hair-do is another thing, but you can't win them all).

Well, not sure if you knew Gerd/Stan, but Basseggio officially moved to Treviso on a 6 month loan deal with an option to buy. Isnt he meant to be one of the best Belgian players??

I know Milanista, but still thanks..
Your expression "meant to be" is very accurate...
He's one of the biggest talents in Belgian football: very good long pas, vista and a very good shot techique and free kick accuracy, BUT he's slow, rather lazy and full of himself...
A couple of years ago clubs like In ter Milan were interested in him...now he goes to Treviso (aren't they last in the Serie A).
I hope everything goes well for him because in his good days he's an asset for every team (well not thebig clubs like Milan, Barca, Chelsea of course), but i'm afraid this will be the first step on his way down...
He used to be one of my favourite players...please keep me up-to-date about how he's performing.

I remember seeing him against Celtic a few years ago and thought he was brilliant, great playmaker. But did remember you saying he was going downhill which was a pity.

FD

Well FD, he's not entirly to blame to be honest.
He was the undisputed playmaker until the Anderlecht board decided to call Zetterberg back from Olympiakos. Anderlecht have a tradition buying players who once were succesfull with the club. Usually this turns out to be catastrophic a few examples: Scifo, Grun, Zetterberg, De Wilde, Goor...they all disappointed when they came back.
Now what happened when Zetterberg came back: the team had two offensive thinking CMF's and was unbalanced in a 4-4-2. So the coach had to make a choice between Bassegio and Zetterberg. Unfortunately the board apllied pressure on the coach because Zetterberg is the favourite player of Anderlechts' strong man...So Bassegio became a substitute and he was demoralised, he never had the spirit to figth for his place...
I hope he does well in Treviso because i like him alot, but i'm afraid it will turn out otherwise...i think after a few weeks he will be on the bench in Treviso too...He needs confidence of his coach and much first team opportunities, but when you know that Treviso are last in the Serie A...it's almost certain that the Treviso coach will not have much patience (or another scenario which is typical for Belgian players in big competitions: soon after the transfer the coach who wanted them get's sacked and the new one has other plans for the first team).
