Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner and New Line Cnema, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

HBO to Back Blu-ray Exclusively

When Warner announced that they would back Blu-ray exclusively, there was no confirmation that New Line Cinema and HBO would follow, only speculation that it was highly likely. The very next day New Line confirmed that they would follow Warner and back Blu-ray exclusively and now, a few days after the Warner announcement, HBO has also confirmed that they are "following the same policy as Warner Home Video." according to HBO Video president Henry McGee.

With the recent flood of Blu-ray exclusive announcements and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas being heavily dominated by Blu-ray, it looks like we will finally have one high definition media format sooner rather than later.

The Sopranos
Rome
Deadwood
Sex and the City
Six Feet Under
Oz

Eeeesh! Will you keep it? I'd like Heroes on Blu-ray (it's on HD-DVD only just now) but until Universal goes neutral/Blu then it's not gonna happen. [-o<

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

I dont feel like shelling out for the Sopranos all over again, have it all on DVD as it is, but tis the cost of upgrading that is putting me off, plus I dont know if you really need to see Ralph getting cut into lil bits in HD.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Dont think ill make the step till the discs get cheap aswell. I pretty much have all the movies I like on dvd, so it would only be new released that I would be getting in HD format, and they are still far too expensive.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Same here. Its still very expensive to get the discs and a good player. You can also find HD movies all over the net nowadays anyway.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

dont you guys have netflix? movies are cheap to rent over here

i guess i could take it back, but it was the xbox hddvd player and it didnt cost too too much... it was like $100

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Universal HD DVD exclusivity contract has expired, sits non-renewed

More news from the format war today, and it isn't good for the red camp. Daily Variety has confirmed that Universal's agreement to stick with HD DVD has ended and has not been renewed. Additionally, Paramount has an escape clause in its contract that can be exercised following Warner's departure from the (now dwindling) HD DVD ranks. The article highlights various ongoing commitments both companies have to the format, but we've heard these kind of promises before from studios. It's feeling like a party where everyone leaves at once; nobody wants to be the first out the door, but everyone's looking in that direction.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Dear Warner can we please have a complete Season 6 set of The Sopranos, splitting them into two parts was pointless! Yes there both region free but still.

For that price, thats sweet enough, plus you can plug it into your PC and watch HD movies there! Plus he will be able to pick up some great Movies for cheap now, seeing lots of places and people will start to bin HD-DVD, thus bargains galore! Thats the key thing, do you upgrade to see your old favourites in true quality, or is it for the newer movies, which some of which will be piss anyhow! I'd pick up a HD-DVD add on if it was 50 quid here, I mean thats just a little more than a game!

I wish Blu-ray were Region Free like HD-DVD though, I find region proctection is a right fucking bollocks up, we had it for years with games etc, then DVD's, now Games on the PS3 are ok, but they region lock BD....... Also think if HD-DVD had a nice red see thru box kinda like BD, instead of that awful Brown Red balls they went for, it might of made people think that aint shite. ;)

I'll definitely invest in HD media - but will be a lot more selective now than I was with DVDs. I really hope the Bourne Trilogy get released on BR quick though! :D

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

HD-DVD's previous cornering of the porn market is over, with massive implications for the format war.

While the Consumer Electrics Show is on in Las Vegas this week, in the same building is the Adult Entertainment Expo, and it has a lot more bearing on the largest gadget show in the world than you might think.

About a year ago, the porn industry threw its lots in with HD-DVD. Everyone said then that, rather than their aggressive price-cutting, this would more likely help them win the format war.

Twelve months on, and big players including Digital Playground and Hustler have recanted offering Blu-Ray porn along with blue HD-DVD offerings. DP has said they'll be offering 15 titles in the format this year, and Hustler is upping their number to 25.

Sony would never admit it, but the truth is that this could be a huge boon for Blu-Ray. Whether we like it or not, pornography is huge, and if they want to throw their weight behind the format, it could finally give them the win they crave. After all, history says that Betamax were beaten because VHS embraced the filth.

Of course Warner and New Line's switch to the blue corner has definitely helped, but certainly a huge dose of 'adult entertainment' could just see this turn out to be Blu-Ray's year.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Toshiba have already announced price drops for their players.

Effective yesterday, the HD-A3 MSRP has dropped to $149.99, the 1080p-capable HD-A30 to $199.99, and the top of the line HD-A35 to $299.99. Combined with an extended "perfect offer" of 5 free HD DVDs with every purchase,

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

The specificity of Blu Ray profil 2.0 (Thanks TEEDA and sfc_tsubasa)

New Blu-ray 2.0 spec makes PS3 the most future-proof player.

With the sudden and unexpected announcement from Warner that the studio would be abandoning HD DVD titles in favor of Blu-ray, it seemed to many observers that the high-def format war was all over, bar the shouting.

With the upcoming 2.0 player profile requiring Blu-ray players to be networked, Sony finally gets to play its trump card: the PlayStation 3, which has clearly emerged as one of the best Blu-ray players on the market—and is likely to remain so for some time. Why? Because the first player now becomes the most versatile, sporting a future-proof Blu-ray setup.

Before we can understand why the PlayStation 3 is able to so easily deal with new profiles, we must first look at the difference between the 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 profiles to see why a simple firmware update isn't enough to make a player compliant.

* 1.0 is the launch profile, and secondary audio and video decoders are optional, as is local storage and network connectivity. The majority of standalone players fit into this category.
* 1.1 is the newer profile, and to take advantage of these discs, players need a secondary audio and video decoder to handle picture-in-picture, as well as at least 256MB of local storage for content.
* 2.0 is the profile of the future, requiring the two secondary decoders, 1GB of local storage for updates and content, and an Internet connection
.

HD DVD players have included networking as standard since the beginning, but Blu-ray has not, and the evolving standard may become a large problem for early adopters. The 2.0 profile actually changes the minimum requirements for full compatibility. In other words, [#ff0000]there is only one player currently on the market that will be 2.0 compatible: the PlayStation 3[/#ff0000], which, with its upgradeable hard drive, Ethernet port, and powerful graphics capabilities, will be able to adapt to any and all future updates. This is quite the slap in the face to consumers who paid several hundred dollars for players that won't be to be updated to take advantage of the 1.1 profile, much less the upcoming 2.0

What 2.0 brings

The 2.0 profile brings picture-in-picture and online functionality to Blu-ray discs; these movies will have "BD-Live" stickers on the case so you know certain features will require 2.0-compliant players. Discs that only require 1.1 profile players will be adorned with "Bonus View" stickers. Are we confused yet?

In contrast, HD DVD has required an Internet connection and local storage from day one, and certain HD DVD movies already use picture-in-picture and online functionality for their bonus features.

What will Blu-ray do to compete with these features? At CES, FOX Home Entertainment showed off a Blu-ray version of Aliens Vs. Predator that featured an online, multiplayer game that had you throwing virtual knives and shooting at the aliens on the screen using the remote and competing against other players remotely. Other exhibitors were showing off trivia games with a PlayStation 3 as a demo unit. In other words, vendors and Blu-ray partners already have the 2.0 profile running on the PS3, allowing them to use the PS3 controller and remote to design BD-Live titles.

While HD DVD may have done a better job of future-proofing their players, the immaturity of the Blu-ray spec hasn't proven to be an insurmountable obstacle. At CES, the Blu-ray Disc Association announced that 3.5 million Blu-ray players had been sold to date. Of those, 3 million were PlayStation 3s, the most future-proof Blu-ray player on the market. Still, this means that roughly 15 percent of the early adopters are going to be frozen out of the latest and greatest Blu-ray features with BD-Live. That's bad news for current owners of stand-alone players, but with the price of the PlayStation 3 now down to $399.99 and the format wars shaping up nicely in Blu-ray's favor, the system may actually be less expensive and more powerful than the latest-generation standalone players.

This is quite the odd turn of events: it was assumed when the PS3 launched that the gaming system would be the Trojan horse that brought Blu-ray into the homes of the mass market. Now? The inexpensive and future-proofed Blu-ray functions of the PS3, matched with the high-quality upscaling the system brings to normal DVDs, may be the Trojan horse bringing gaming to home theater enthusiasts.

That's gay, if early Blu-Ray players won't get updates!

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

It was always going to be like that, thats one thing that HD DVD had over the BDA - set specs from day one. It was like that with DVD's early on though.

The PQ of Cars on BD is phenomenal!

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Superbad came in the mail this morning and when you put it in it shows up under video as Superbad - Blu Ray.

But I still get signed out of the bloody network everytime I watch a DVD/BD, sort it out Sony!

National Geographic Makes Move to Blu-ray Exclusivity

Warner's move to Blu-ray exclusivity has swayed yet another distribution partner to follow suit, with National Geographic confirming that it too will drop HD DVD support in favor of Blu-ray.

Distributed under the Warner umbrella along with New Line Home Entertainment, HBO Home Video and BBC Home Video, National Geographic had been format-neutral, releasing only one title thus far, 'Relentless Enemies,' on both Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Although the company says it has no plans to issue an official statement or press release, a spokesperson confirmed for us that moving forward, National Geographic will no longer release titles in the HD DVD format.

The move will go into effect with the company's upcoming release, 'Sharkwater,' which will hit Blu-ray only in April (an official announcement for the title with full details is expected shortly.)

National Geographic's decision comes in the wake of moves by Warner subsidiaries New Line and HBO to shift to Blu-ray exclusivity. BBC is now the only Warner-distributed company to remain format-neutral.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

The reviews back you up on that, it could look amazing if FOX could be bothered, Close Encouters looks amazing on BD and thats 30 years old.

Re: Blu Ray/HD-DVD war (Warner; New Line Cnema and HBO, Blu-Ray exclusivity)

Doesn't really make it worth it though, they'd only be upscaled. Wouldn't look too great surely?

Why would it be upscaled? It will be proper HD...
