Sony PlayStation 3

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

Sony CEO Howard Stringer has given the clearest indication yet of the company's launch plans for PlayStation 3, stating that the next-gen system will enter the market at between $300 and $400 when it arrives in mid-2006.

Speaking with FORTUNE magazine, Stringer confirmed that the PS3 will initially be sold at a significant loss in order to drive the Blu-Ray next-generation DVD standard out into the marketplace.

His comments confirm speculation that Sony will be subsidising the Blu-Ray hardware for PS3, and should quell fears that the console would enter the market at a very high price point due to the cost of the Blu-Ray drives.

The FORTUNE piece cites mid-2006 as the launch window for PS3 in Japan, with US launch to follow a few months later, but it's not clear whether this is speculation on the part of the magazine, as those dates are not directly attributed to Stringer.

Another element which does directly cite the British-born Sony boss, however, is regarding the media bundle which will ship with the PS3 - with Stringer stating that the console will come with a bundle of games, movies and TV shows.

This move is presumably designed to showcase the advantages of the Blu-Ray format, on which Sony is pinning much of its hope for the next few years - and, indeed, for the next-gen console war, where the use of Blu-Ray gives the PS3 arguably its most significant hardware advantage over the Xbox 360, which uses standard DVD discs.

Some speculation has emerged over whether the content Stringer refers to might ship on a built-in hard drive on the PS3, but the firm has already stated that the console won't ship with an internal hard drive - instead offering users the option of adding one using a 2.5" hard drive bay on the back of the machine.

Stringer's comments come, of course, as Microsoft's Xbox 360 arrives in North America - timing which is undoubtedly entirely deliberate on Sony's part. Microsoft officially backs the HD-DVD standard which competes directly with the Blu-Ray standard, but has not opted to include it in Xbox 360 - however, it has hinted that it may release an updated version of the console with the ability to play back HD-DVD media discs at some point in future.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

Theres so many kick ass franchises in that list, Im starting to think to myself why Im getting so excited over the Xbox 360!

I swear, if it wasnt for PGR 3 I'd patiently wait for the PS3.

Regarding that list, is it a new one or pretty old Thomas?

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

The PS3 aint gonna hit these shores till the sunny side of 2007, there is no way I'm waiting that long and with no machine at the moment it's all hype. I'm definatly getting a 360 if i get the chance.

May as well get both to be honest

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

im gonna buy a 360, but I cant see myself needing two machines. I'll defo get rid of the 360 when PS3 comes out.

If the PS3 is region free Im gonna import one from Japan this spring. Fingers crossed!

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

So when do you lot think PES6 will be released in the Europe?

Because WE10 will probably come out with the PS3, which is late 2006....that might mean an akward release for PES6, then they have to work on WE11.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

I think PES6 will be released on Xbox 360 christmas next year, then ported to the PS3.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

Wont really wait for PES by christmas next year because thats about one month after speculation carries WE is being released (4th quater 2006) and i think it normally takes Konami just under two months to do the transfers, minor tweaks, language change etc (lazy bastards  ) before pes is out up here in europe... Plus the WE/PES series is as a whole devoted to SONY or PS (whatever you want to call them) as they have way more support for thier format over in japan (where WE/PES is developed originally for) and is likely going to be supported even more as far as the next-gen consoles go, so i wont be betting on any single/major realease of PES/WE on the xbox360 as it blatantly dosen't just seem possible really....;)

BTW crisp sig there stringer bell :). thats a brilliant tune... d'u fink he'll quit after his next album????

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

Revolution Controller? = gimmick I reckon. I dont know why Nintendo are bothering in honesty, yet another Mario Re-incarnation of Mario Kart, Mario World, or what next Mario Beach ball? Another Zelda.... Zelda's Link to the future! another Metroid... Metroid Prime 2! I mean come on!!

Plus a horrible 2 piece controller to boot who wants this thing?

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

At least Nintendo take chances and do different things and not try to stick to the same genric formula.

After all that talk about PS3 being expensive, now its suddenly at $300-400, the exact same price point as Xbox 360?

If true, Sony's busy at work gutting all those great features they've been hyping.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

Are you really going to be happy holding those 2 piece bits for the controller? I think its horrible they need to change that for any type of success with it.

No way. I think its the most innovative thing ever seen in the gaming market. Just think about it. Your playing the new Zelda game, using one part of the controller to move about and the other to swing your sword at enemies. Genuis!!

The quote about the PS3 price has been retracted by Howard Stringer....apparently it wasn't him who said it anyway...

I read this somewhere in engadget.com

The quote was given -- not by Stringer, apparantly, but by "anonymous" Sony insiders.

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

There is no way that the release day list for the PS3 will have every game on that list. It's probably just a semi-committed list for development which is a different thing altogether. Given none of those games exist at the moment, nobody can say what will or won't be released on launch day with the machine. It could have 10 games, it could have 200 - nobody knows!

As for Sony not having the supply problems that MS are having - do you not remember the PS2 launch???

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

With all the mayhem going on right now with the 360 it might be worth getting as many of these as you can and selling them. ££££££££\\:o/

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

RE: The PS3 Controller...

I find it quite funny that shortly after they revealed it, Sony reps were quick to dismiss it as "not being the final design." And now they are saying that they got all right and it is quite ergonomic indeed :eh:

I guess time will tell

Re: PlayStation 3 - Official Thread (Design, Screens, Videos)

tbh when i first seen the controller i hated it but seeing how small it is and how it fits in your hands it dont seem that bad.
