The Retro-PES Corner

I will do a test on changing the condition to 7 or 8 regarding fatigue. Really annoys me when players can't go more than two games in a row.

Talking of fatigue, did you know Aston Villa won the old First Division in 1980/81 they used just 14 players in the entire season. Plus it was a 42 game season then.

Well no wonder they won then, everyone else was using 11!

Sorry.

@mattmid - You know Minanda really has that superior look on his face, a look of "I'm the king and I know it". The thing is, the guy really IS the king. I want to be Minanda when I grow up.

If I remember properly he's got high shot acc. right? Which is strange, he's scored just one or two goals in a season in a half for me.

Yeah could be that. Also Espimas hasn't been doing it for me either. Ordaz and Dodo have been great.

Match 6

Start v Lillestrom

Although it's early in the season Start find themselves needing to take all three points as they face early season strugglers Lillestrom. A win for Lillestrom would see Start slip below them. Although Lillestrom are yet to win they have drawn two and their losses have only been by the odd goal barring a 2-0 loss to second placed Stromsgodset. With both teams having only scored three so far it promises to be a tight affair and as such the first goal could be vital. Start will be hoping Finnbogason gets some help in front of goal as he is their only scorer so far this season.

Start make one change with Borufsen coming in for his first start of the season at RW. With two wide players already injured in Sandberg and Wichne and with Sigurdarson struggling for form Borufsen gets his chance to claim the shirt.

First Half

After an early half chance for Christensen that was quickly closed down Lillestrom broke and Martin their CF should have done better with a header that he ended up putting well wide. Then on 11 minutes, a free kick out wide from Aremu was met well by Finnbogason but the Lillestrom keeper, , made a fine diving save to his right. Two minutes later Trygvarson wasted a good chance, coming in from the right and opting to meet the low cross with the outside of his right foot rather than his weaker left and lifting it over the crossbar. Shortly after Finnbogason was chopped down rather crudely and looked to have picked up a knock but played on. Then on 28 minutes Aremu won the ball well in midfield. He prodded the ball to Borufsen who muscled ahead of the defender and bore down on goal in line with the edge of the six yard box. With the right back chasing him and the central defender coming across to cover he let fly from just inside the box and arrowed a low drive into the far corner of the net! 1-0! Martin then put another chance wide for Lillestrom although this one somewhat more difficult than his earlier effort. On 33 minutes Finnbogason finally succumbed to his injury after being unable to run it off and Start will be anxious to find out how long he is going to be out. Salvesen came on in his place. As half time approached, Christensen made a great tackle in midfield and with the full back in the process of overlapping he fed Trygvarsson down the wing. Trygvarsson angled a cross into the box where Salvessen, who is somewhat smaller than Finbogason, stepped back a pace as the Lillestrom CB came for the header. The CB mistimed his jump and as the ball cleared him, Salvesen cushioned it on his head and as the ball dropped hit a sharp left foot volley past the keeper and into the net! 2-0! An early goal of the season contender there from Salvesen. With Aremu and Christensen controlling midfield Start go into the break with a two goal lead with Lillestrom offering very little so far.

Second Half

Lillestrom almost got a foothold in the game straight after the break as a shot from outside the box hit Larsen and almost deflected in but fortunately with the pace taken off it and the wet pitch there was time for the keeper to fall on it. Regardless it was an early warning that the game was far from won yet. Lillestrom continued to press for a way back into the game with a shot saved for a corner, a header over the bar from the corner and another shot parried by Opdal that he grabbed at the second attempt all before 55 minutes had passed. Start gradually got a foothold back in the game and on 71 minutes Borufson came very close to adding a third. His angled left footed drive narrowly missing the right hand post as it zipped across the wet surface. He was staking a good claim to keep his place and got a good round of applause as he was subbed on 75 minutes. Just after Salvesen wasted a great opportunity to put the game to bed after being the recipient of a poor crossfield ball from the centre back. Clean through on goal he poked it tamely wide of both the on rushing keeper and the goal. After 80 minutes, Larsen, who was having another solid game at CB, made a great block on what looked a goalbound shot but that was the last of the danger as Lillestrom ran out of ideas. On the evidence today, taking their chances could be a season long problem for them. FT 2-0

M.O.M Areemu 6.5, with Borufsen, Opdal and Salvesen also scoring a 6.5

Elsewhere Stromgodset were held 1-1 at home to Haugesund, Molde won 2-1 away and draw specialists Odd got another 1-1 draw. Tromso, Sarpsborg and Bodo all won by 1 goal margins whilst Rosenborg saw out a tough 1-0 against Valerenga to maintain their 100% record and stretch their lead at the top to 5 pts. Stromsdogset hold on to 2nd with their point but Sarpsborg and Bodo close to within a point of them. Start move up to 8th with 8pts and a 2-2-2 5-4 record. Lillestrom remain rooted to the bottom, 2 pts adrift of Sandefjord and Kristiansund

Finnbogasan will be out for just a week although Salvesen played well when he came on and scored a terrific goal as well and will look to keep his place when Finnbogason returns to fitness.

Next game: Start v Odd.

A mini version of @miguelfcp and @mattmid , and their superb and epic tales of Master League battles and building an entire football universe in edit mode. PES has become Civilization with a football. :APPLAUD:

Anyhow, playing Master League on PES 3 (the genre defining game imo), and all the nobs turned up to max difficulty, including the game reset block. Three seasons in Div 2 and it all goes pear shaped, signed some new players mid-season and had a big negative points total, as I was counting on winning the Div 2 Cup Final that I had reached. In short, lost it 1-0 (COM team was WE United and they had a load of legends). Instant game over and start again.

This game makes every little achievement seem momentous, upon beginning again I signed Salomon Olembe, the former Cameroon midfielder and he of the magic left peg. Now this is 2002-03 season player data, so the guy is still a kid. His first game for me is Div 2 Cup round 1 game, win it 5-1 and had eight default squad players. Olembe scored three from left wing forward and created a fourth.

In a nutshell, why PES games form pre-2006 are timeless, you have to earn every small victory and every defeat is a lesson learned. :shiver:

@mattmid - great read once more, keep it coming mate. How's the reduction of stamina and mentality working in your save?
@WhoAteMeDinner - Caught the bug of story telling in retro-PES? Hope you did! Anyways, absolutely agree when you say that retro-PES toughness is what makes it so appealing. The pressure of winning points to avoid game over just makes the experience more memorable, and after a few game overs when you're finally getting on track and winning more it's a wonderful feeling.
I remember PES3 had a fantastic group of african players, particularly Senegal had a superb squad if I recall properly - still living out of the 2002 World Cup hype, when Senegal shocked the world and won the match against then-WC title holder France.

ML UNITED – The defaults

Season 2 – Winter transfer window update

So, fighting for promotion eh? Our unusual and unexpected accumulation of points also brought us…a whole lot of PES Points! Even with all the contract renewals and transfer-ins last summer, I’ve managed to keep our salary expenditures not-so-inflated (just a near-thousand PES points more than the original default team’s paycheck) so you bet this excellent half-of-season 2 meant that we had a few thousand extra PES Points to spend in new players. Also, I definitely wanted to get rid of a few defaults who had even less space in our squad, now that we can proudly admit we have a core of players that play every single match (and also a core of bench players which I heavily rely on, like Minanda, Ettori, Baumann, Ordaz and Hamsun) and leave no room to further experimenting with reserves, which I had done in Season One.

As usual, I scanned the “newcomers” group to find out if there were worthy and rather cheap newgens/regens for us to acquire. Though I usually look down on regens, I’m learning to love that particular retro-PES quirkiness so I bid for Maldini (the only 17-yo you’ll ever see with a 98 mentality rating!). He ended up rejecting my bid and signing for…AC Milan!!! Do not mess with PS2 PES2009 AI, “she” knows a lot more than what we thought she knew…

Besides Maldini, this batch of regens wasn’t exciting at all. So I turned my attention to the newgens and as always, they do not disappoint. I didn’t even intend to acquire a goalkeeper now, given how spectacularly Ivarov has been playing since the beginning of the save, but a certain Fredriksson caught my eye not just because of his goalkeeping skills, but because he’s a prolific set piece taker and he’s a penalty kick specialist. The Nordic Rogerio Ceni? Anyways, I offered him a buttload of money…(ahem, excuse me, PES points) that made him the most expensive paycheck of ours by far and still he didn’t want to come. Only such a quirky player would make me lose my mind like this – also there was another newgen in this batch who was also 17-years old and a much better keeper than the Swedish…- so in a way I’m glad he didn’t accept my offer for the PES points would certainly be better spent elsewhere.

Still most of the newgens won’t sign with us, no matter how cheap. Makes sense, since even the ones who are not the most impressive are immediately hired by the best clubs in the world. But as you know already I never quit so I kept making offers to a few of them, and against all odds I was able to get ONE newgen, my first!

Guimaraes (SB) – 17 years old - free agent: I knew Guimaraes from another save I did years ago on the PSP – also on a more recent PES – and if he turns out to be what he became in PES2011, he’s definitely bombastic! I mean, as a 17-year-old he’s already the best statsheet in our squad, so you can see why I’m excited. He’s a right-back with no weaknesses to his game and a welcomed introduction to our team because of Espimas’ decline, which has become evident this season not just stat-wise but also shows on the pitch. Even if he’s still reliable, the time has come to begin the process of replacing him.

For now though, I’m thinking of the possibility of playing both Guimaraes and Espimas at the same time, though they’re both right-footers. Ximelez still plays decently but Espimas was always more comfortable in the wing-back role (Ximelez’s lack of stamina is a liability) and playing Espimas on the left could give me more opportunities to use his long-range ability; also Guimaraes is so skilled overall he would fit the left-wing-back role perfectly too.

Away from the newgens/regens, the “available for transfer talks” group had no interesting players. Most of them were past their prime so I wouldn’t spend points on their transfer fee and contract, given also they don’t fit our “timeline” as a team who’s looking to get younger, not older.

I still had time, PES Points and availability to get at least another player, so I focused on my priorities for the squad: a decent CMF to replace Van den Berg (he’s doing fine but I doubt he’ll be a good player in the future as players like Gutierrez and Jaric are turning out to be) and a centre-back to fight with Cooper, El Moubarki, Jaric and Baumann for a spot in our back-3. A 22-year-old Ledley was an interesting choice, rather cheap (transfer fee of 3000 Points) and a balanced player overall, no weaknesses and every stat above 70, including mentality and teamwork which I value tremendously. He refused all my offers.

As for the CB role, there were no cheap, young and decent players available who fit these criteria. I ended up getting a…Libero! Yeah, a natural Libero, thought these were extinct! I got him while I was searching players with high teamwork stat and came upon a certain Mexican dude who’s still young and who’ll provide me an interesting challenge: where the hell will I play him?

Araujo (Libero) – 21 years old – 2500 PES Points: He’s a decent defender for his age (70 def. stat), he’s agile and isn’t slow but he’s short (175cm) and a very good passer of the ball. Also, he’s got an 83 teamwork stat. Seems to me he could be a good DMF or even a CMF (a Stein/Araujo midfield would be a tough one to swallow for our opponents), but he’s so skilled he could still handle the CB position anyways. I’ll need time to see what he brings to the table in-loco.

Transfer Outs: Stremer, Giersen, Fouque; Ruskin (Loan) – 3 players sold and one loaned out. Stremer hasn’t played since Season One, same with Giersen (also the arrivals of Araujo and Guimaraes made these two completely obsolete). Fouque played a few minutes mainly in the last fixtures up until this transfer window, his attributes evolved a lot though I seldom played him, but he’ll never be a good player and on the pitch he brings nothing interesting. As for Ruskin, I was ready to sell him as I completely trust Guimaraes, Espimas, Ximelez and Macco to fight for the two wingback spots. Ruskin wasn’t horrible at all, but miles away from what Macco is doing and he’s going to be the 4th option for these two roles, so Ruskin completely lost his space here.

Must’ve made around 1500 PES points with these sales.

- > Overall, I’m pretty pleased. Got rid of a few defaults who were just taking squad space and brought in two interesting, young players who’ll certainly be the future of our team. The fact that my ML is on the “very hard” setting makes it tremendously difficult to negotiate with players, so every transfer-in is celebrated like a D2 Cup win. Particularly Guimaraes is a catch, I believe he’ll become one of the best sidebacks in the game in a few years. Araujo and his ability to fit in most positions and high football-IQ is bound to be a favourite of mine, few 21-year olds have the balls to declare themselves to be a Libero these days.

What are the differences in difficulty level in the ML? If it was set to easy would you be able to buy pretty much anyone straight away?
I'm talking about the ML difficulty not the game difficulty ie Regular, Top player etc

@miguelfcp A really nice window there! As soon as I was reading about Araujo I thought DM, with his defensive qualities and an eye for a pass it sounds an ideal spot for him, although you may get away with him in the middle of the back three as well if the other two can deal with the high balls. As long as he doesn't get isolated with a lump of a CF at a corner. Sounds like you've picked up some signings that are already good and should prove to be even better as they progress and at the same time managed to dump the salary of those who aren't even making the bench. It looks set for a good run at promotion in the second half of the season.

I'm really like how the option file plays and I am convinced there are more wayward passes and bad decisions late on in games even though maybe it's a placebo effect. One thing is that all teams do use three subs now but really that's no bad thing as generally most teams tend to do that, even if it's only to waste time for some! Also this in itself gives rise to the situation of 'fresh legs' (and mind) actually meaning someting as those who started the game are down to low green or red while on comes the sub with a fresh green bar of stamina.

I'm well into making the 2nd Div now, might get it finished today or tomorrow and I will then pick a team and start that league running parallel to the Eliteserien. Then I hope to go down to the third tier (which has two groups) which does include a couple of 'B' teams from the big clubs but is mostly proper teams. There seems to be enough info on FM to do it so I'll start a couple and see when I get to it. Even if there isn't enough I'll still do what I can to enable me to have the Norwegian Cup alongside these seasons as well.

I'm undecided between three teams at the moment as to who to pick to play as in the OBAS Ligen, Ullensaker/Kisa , Jerv or Nest-Sotra.

@Titch - I don't know if it has an effect on how many PES points you get per win as well, would make sense if it did. It does seem to play a role in the negotiations, as I mentioned before my club popularity grade his up (now it's a D) and players/teams with D, E and F grades still refuse my (generous) offers unless those players are in the "available for transfer talks" list - and even so, most of them still reject me! It reminds me of using Tinder as a man.

@mattmid - You'll be the only one in the world with a chance to play in the 2nd Norwegian division in a PES game! If we could get a few more users like you, imagine the outstanding World Database filled with all sorts of leagues we could get to play in retro-PES games.

I do believe whenever we make such meddling with stats it's wise to play a few dozens of matches to have a clear and accurate understanding of its effects on the gameplay. Keep us updated on how that goes.

I played a few matches of the second-half of the season already and tried out Araujo as a CM alongside Stein in the midfield. You're right, he definitely looks like a DMF judging by his statsheet, but...I love Stein man. Ever since he "entered" the default team (was it PES2008 or PES6?) he's been a favourite of mine in all ML saves I do. As usual, he's playing so well I can't get him off, so I tried Araujo as a CMF and so far, this Stein-Araujo partnership really makes my team more solid defensively. Also, Araujo's tecnhique and passing ability allows me to pass the ball more whereas in the past we often had to use the long ball more. The only issue is Araujo's poor attacking stat (61 I believe) and aggression (55), so even though he's assigned to the CMF position he tends to drop back alongside Stein when we have the ball which is not what I want from a box-to-box who ideally has to act as the "glue" between the defensive and offensive players, channeling play from the back to the front men.

@miguelfcp Hopefully the more he plays CM his Att Stat will grow quickly and he can become that box to box player you want. How old is Stein? Maybe Araujo can slip back there when he retires. I haven't played ML in a while but I have a feeling Stein was in PES6 the name rings a bell from then.

Yes I agree re the testing, I played a lot of matches with some Copa Libertadores / Sudoamericana teams from this season that I made which was when I first adopted this approach to test. My favourite match of all was as CD Macara playing against Internacional. I lost 5-0! No joke. I really enjoyed it as well because it was so good to see the AI putting me to the sword. I couldn't get anything going at all, I think I had either 1 or 2 shots in the entire (20 mins) game. It could easily have been 7 or 8 as they missed a few chances as well. I think they had around 18 shots to my 1 or 2 in the end. I could barely string more than two passes together before losing it or having to go backwards.

It's a shame there aren't more patches towards other leagues. There are so many great patches but they invariably all have England/France/Germany/Italy/Spain and then a mix of other 'top' sides. For me one of the retro pes's strength's is the different games you can have when you start playing without 'star' players. I swear I've had things happen in those games that I have never seen when playing with the top teams. One thing I think is vital is to have the right height/wt and weak foot frequency as it adds so much individuality to the game even before we get to the ability stats. The times I've seen sliced clearances or wayward shots because it's on the (bad) weak foot. Like in my game last night where my player hit it with the outside of his right when it was begging to be hit with his left.

This is one of my huge bugbears of real football. I think it is appalling that there are many professional footballers who can't use their other foot, even some who couldn't pass it 10 yards with it. What the hell is training for? I would insist on it as a manager. The amount of wingers who beat the full back then turn back because they can't cross it with that foot! Or full backs who turn inside and then have to pass it back because they can't use their other foot for the forward pass. Drives me mad.

Anyway back to the original point before this turns into a rant  my plan for this file is to then add Swedish Divisions. Then either on this one or another option file, dependent on spaces left the Finnish and Danish leagues as well.

Talking of this I see that the modern pes with the extra leagues have so many wrong or lack of proper player stats it makes me wonder how much of that is making the gameplay worse that perhaps it is? Anyway we won't let that bother us here in retroworld :D

I just fired up PES5 and realized Stein, Jaric, Ordaz et al were introduced exactly that year.
I believe Stein is 28 currently. His attributes are still evolving though, so he won't decline anytime soon. Also I was absolutely convinced he was scottish, turns out he's irish? My whole world has been shattered.

About your mini-rant about weak foot acc., the interesting thing about it is that in an amateur context most of the professional footballers are able to do whatever they want with the ball using their weak foot. Hell, even those big bulky defenders who seem to have no technique at all in a real match are able to perform dribbles and tricks you wouldn't believe. Now in a hyper-competitive context such as top division football the stakes are so high and the activity itself is so demanding both physically and psychologically that whoever is not truly world class at a particular aspect of football will seem mediocre at it.
It's similar to NBA players, some of them in a real match won't even try to shoot 3-point-shots ever, but in practice or in a non-competitive context they score dozens of them in a row.

Back to PES, I agree with you: retro-PES shows its strengths more when teams of lower quality face each other. I believe it's the lack of individual talent that makes the tactical aspect shine more. To me, a big part of the future of retro-PES editing could be to focus more on "obscure" leagues, taking advantage of the huge amount of stadiums to be assigned for those teams that don't exist - and probably will never exist - in modern-day football games.

And yeah, definitely, there's a huge problem with player stats in modern games. I won't go into detail here but even the best players in the world have plain wrong statsheets, let alone the others...

The OBAS Ligaen gets underway tonight. I will be taking on newly promoted Nest-Sotra in what looks a difficult task to avoid relegation. The bottom 2 get relegated whilst 3rd from bottom enters a play off. Top 2 are promoted with the following 4 entering the play offs. The winner of which plays 3rd bottom in the Eliteserien.

First game of the season is away to Sandnes who finished 5th last season and lost in the play offs. We'll be going with the 4-5-1 they played in their last game as a starting point.

Line up: Selvik; Larsen, Saethre, Haugsdal, Martinsen; Furdal, Cirak, Bjorlo, Stenevik, Nesse; Dang

First Half:

The game begins with Nest-Sotra's five man midfield making it difficult for Sogndal to get any moves going and it's a bit of a stalemate until 13 minutes in when Sandnes fire in a 25yd shot that rises just over the bar after finally getting a bit of space. A couple of minutes later a defensive error from Sandnes after good pressure by Dang led to a misplaced back pass that keeper couldn't stop from going for a corner. The corner was headed out but met by Cirak with a ferocious shot that flew narrowly high and wide. Shortly after that a dangerous move by Sandnes is thwarted only by a bad final ball that meant the unmarked striker had to reach back to control the ball first, giving time for the Nest-Sotra defence to smother him. A better ball and it would have been 1-0. Sandnes were now probing and just the sheer amount of bodies getting a foot in here and there was keeping them out of the box. Nest-Sotra finally work the ball down to the edge of the Sogndal box where a shot is deflected kindly to Cirak who hits a first time shot that cracks off the bar. So close! On 30 minutes a ball is floated over the defence to the winger but Saethre slides in for a wonderful last ditch block and it's out for a corner. The rest of the half is mostly Sandnes but the Nest-Sotra midfield is sticking at it well and breaking things up. Meanwhile Dang, up front, is chasing everything gallantly and has a bit of pace. Sandnes appear to have a bit more size and strength all over the pitch but this is leading to a few cheap free kicks for Nest-Sotra as well. HT 0-0

Second Half:

A scrappy start to the second half is livened up on 56 minutes as Sandnes' Danso scrapes the bar with a free kick from the edge of the box. Then on 65 minutes a moment of madness from the Sandnes keeper should have gifted Nest-Sotra the league. With the ball having been played back to him by his post he turned and played a short pass straight to Furdal who didn't control it as well as he might but still had plenty of time to get his shot in. The shot struck the bar, landed on the goal line and straight into the hands of a mightily relieved keeper! The game continue to be a tight affair with lots of niggly fouls in midfield stopping any flow to the game. On 82 minutes Larsen made a mistake with a poor pass and Sandnes found themselves with a chance. Haugsdal got across to just get a nick on the ball and man just outside the box but the ball ran kindly for the forward who got back on it before hitting a shot that was excellently saved by the rushing out Sevlik. His first real test of the game and one passed with flying colours. Following it up with a fine catch in a ruck of bodies from the resulting corner. With two minutes left Dang found himself running on to a through ball half a stride ahead of the defender. With the defender closing bit by bit he went for the shot but under a heavy challenge as he did so and the ball flew high into the crowd. Stoppage time of 2 minutes was to be played and with it came heartbreak for Nest-Sotra. With time running out Sandnes found some space down the right and whipped in a cross which Saethre was beaten to by the Sandnes striker Kachi who rose to plant a header beyond Sevlik and steal a late victory to leave Nest-Sotra feeling very hard done by having worked so hard for a point. 3 shots on target apiece and 16 free kicks, only 2 of which were for offside, summed up the hard fought midfield battle. FT 1-0

Elsewhere there weren't too many goals about with Kongsvinger, Viking and Mjondalen winning 1-0 and two 0-0 draw's and a 1-1. Ullensaker/Kisa will find themselves top after a 3-0 defeat of Floro.

Game 2: Nest-Sotra v Levanger

With Bjorlo and Stenevik both picking up minor knocks that will keep them out of this game, Nest-Sotra have to dust themselves down after the added time disappointment. They face Levanger who lost 1-0 to Mjondalen in the first game.

Nergaard and Edvardsen replace the injured players in an otherwise unchanged line up. With Levanger lining up the same, space in midfield could be at a premium.

First Half:

An early chance for Levanger on six minutes as a shot is fired in from an acute angle. Sevlik saves it with his legs and the ball drops kindly to a defender. On 10 minutes Evardsen is brought down on the D and might be injured. While he's off getting treatment Martinsen fires in a great free kick that clips the top of the bar with the keeper beaten. Nergaard was beginning to find a lot of space down the right, once firing in a shot that he dragged well wide and twice getting in crosses but unable to find anyone with them. On 34 minutes Nest-Sotra got a corner. Dang got his head to it and whilst it was on target it had no power and was easily cleared. However the ball was worked back to him on the edge of the box. He found a yard and fired in a shot that narrowly went wide of the keeper's left hand post. Danger for Nest fove minutes before half time as a header is sent just over. Then just before half time a lovely worked move for Nest breaks the deadlock! Dang received the ball with his back to goal, worked a bit of space and fed a ball inside the full back where Nergaard got in behind him, clipping a ball back from the goal line for an unmarked Nesse to head hom from the edge of the six yard box. HT 1-0!

Second Half:

Voll shoots just wide through a crowd of bodies for Levanger just after the restart. After 56 minutes Nesse hits a shot from just outside the box which the keeper makes a bit of a mess off but scrambles it behind for a corner. In the next 15 mins there were a couple of shots from either side that didn't really look like ever troubling the keepers before a late chance for Furcal that he put into the side netting. Then in stoppage time Nest-Sotra almost came undone again as a Levanger player dribbled into a packed area and chipped a ball into the middle. Sevlik, amidst a sea of bodies, dived at it and punched it out of the box where it was hooked further clear as the whistle blew. FT 1-0!

M.O.M Nesse 7.5, Selvik 6.5

Elsewhere it was very tight again with 1-0 victories for Viking and Notodden, whilst Mjondalen beat Tromsdalen 2-0. Four games ended in draws in what looks like being a tight Division if the early signs are anything to go by.

Viking and Mjondalen are the only two 100% sides after just two fixtures, although nine sides are yet to lose. Nest-Sotra sit in 7th.

Next game away to Viking.

What are the differences in difficulty level in the ML? If it was set to easy would you be able to buy pretty much anyone straight away?
I'm talking about the ML difficulty not the game difficulty ie Regular, Top player etc
Exactly, the COM will accept any transfer on the easiest level. I think it describes what it does in PES 3 regarding transfer difficulty.

@miguelfcp I prefer playing with 'lesser' leagues or obscure one's. Like I said earlier in this thread I had a great time playing out the Albanian league.

Talking of two footed players the ultimate two footed passer for me was Glenn Hoddle. As he fits nicely in the 'retro' theme, if you have 15 minutes spare some time take a watch of this
Sublime. Check out the backspin on the pass at 2:24, and one of my favourite goals of all time at 6:30 against Watford. And all that playing on a ploughed field when you could get hacked down for fun by defenders. :APPLAUD:

@Orhainmalz Good luck for tonight with Arsenal, I think they will score, it's just whether they can score more than they'll let in! They could never handle Costa when he was at Chelsea so that's a huge danger for them. They really need Ozil to turn up tonight.

Edit... Anyone seen Ozil?

OBAS Ligaen.

Viking v Nest-Sotra

First Half:

The first chance of the game goes to Dang after 10 minutes when he gets a header in on goal. It's a tame effort though and the keeper collects it easily. On 20 minutes a lovely dummy from Thorstvedt of Viking allows the ball to run through to an unmarked Danielsen on the edge of the box but he pulls his shot well wide. A move that deserved a much better outcome. Then on the half hour mark, the Viking striker, Udo, tries an overhead kick that drifts just over the bar with the keeper beaten. The rest of the half is largely uneventful and the teams go in at 0-0. Viking on top over all but Nest are holding their own.

Second Half:

Chances are exchanged early in the second half before Udo gets off a shot that Sevlik does well to parry to safety. Viking again looking the more threatening but weight of bodies is limiting their clear cut chances. Nest-Sotra passing it around quite neatly but unable to find a final ball. On 65 minutes there's a half chance for Borja as Larsen hoists a long ball over the top but he lashes at it and sends it out of the stadium and the crowd cheer as it lands on a car. Then on 75 minutes a free kick from Nest-Sotra is cleared and suddenly Ernemann, the Viking midfielder, is clear. Larsen is tussling with him but he is sent rolling to the ground and gets up appealing for a free kick. Ernemann meanwhile is bearing down on goal. Sevlik comes out, Ernemann hits it past him but drags it wide! What a chance for Viking! As things start to get a little tense, Bjorlo and Torset pick up yellow cards for late tackles. On 82 minutes Nest get a cross in that Dang meets, but again gets little on it and it's catching practice for Austbo in the Viking goal. Then in stoppage time Udo gets the ball on the left hand edge of the box. He out muscles Haugsdal, then cuts back neatly between Saethre and Larsen before rifling the ball into the far corner! 1-0 Viking! A great individual goal. Nest-Sotra again fall to a stoppage time goal! 1-0 FT

Cirak was Nest-Sotra's best performer again with a 7.0 whilst Nergaard with a 4.0!! will be lucky to keep his place.

Elsewhere Mjondalen lost to send Viking clear at the top. Asane, Ullensaker, Strommen, HamKam and Sogndal all won with Levanger drawing with Notodden.

Viking sit top on 9pts with Ullensaker and Kongsvinger behind on 7. Nest-Sotra drop to 11th 3pts off the bottom where Tromsdalen sit with no points and no goals yet.

Nest-Sotra v Ullensaker/Kisa

A shake up of the team for this one sees Rodsand come in for the first start of the season at CM whilst Bidne shuffled across to CB from right back with Haugland dropped. Fural moves forward from CM to AM with Nergaard dropped to the bench after his poor display in the last game.

First Half:

Ullensaker start well and could have been ahead after just two minutes but Aalbu struck the ball into the ground taking all the pace of it and Selvik was able to save. Ullensake shot wide just after before Nest had their first attempt with Rodland getting forward to get on the end of a cross but he could only send his header wide of the far post. Furdal then showed a nice touch to get past the full back but his angled shot didn't trouble the keeper. Next the impressive Cirak forced his way through a challenge and sent in a smart volley that went narrowly over the angle of post and bar. On 22 minutes a bobbling ball that should have been cleared found it's way to Kurtovic of Ullensaker who hit a firm shot at goal. A shot that Selvik allowed to slip through his grasp and into the net. The look on his face showed he knew he should have done better. 0-1. After Dang had shot wide when well placed Kurtovic nearly added a second with a shot that went just over. Then just before half time Furdal pounced on a cross that cleared the initial attempts at headers and managed to poke it beyond the Ullensaker keeper. HT 1-1!

Second Half:

Ullensaker were quick out of the blocks and Aalbu their top scorer hammered in a shot that was fortunately straight at Selvik. Nest then began to play some good football but were unable to create a real chance, likewise with Ullensaker. With 70 minutes gone it was still 1-1 and quite an open flowing game but with both defences not allowing any chances. Then on 75 minutes, with the defence backtracking, Nesse was allowed to run deep into the Ullensaker half before unleashing a drive that was headed for the top corner before the keeper got up to push it around the post for a corner. Dang then had a late header that went over but that was it as far as chances were concerned as Nest-Sotra saw out stoppage time safely this time.

M.O.M Nesse 7.0 Bidne 7.0

A creditable draw for Nest-Sotra against the team in second but it might be time for someone else to get a chance to show what they can do up front. Dang, without a goal yet this season, is a willing runner but at the moment he couldn't hit a barn door and his ratings are in the 5's as well.

Elsewhere the goals finally arrived as Viking and Strommen both won 3-2 whilst Sogndal and Jerv both ran out 2-1 winners. Aalesund also picked up their first win of the season. Tromsdalen got their first point and goal against Asane whilst Notodden drew with Floro

A couple of things:
- tried out PES2008 PS2 and besides the fact that the ball is less "glued" to the player's feet, everything else seems exactly the same as in PES2009 when it comes to the gameplay. Still, it was just one game so I'll be experimenting a lot with 2008 in the future to understand if after a few dozens of matches I keep my opinion.

- Last night had a wonderful session and after a fantastic match the game crashed, so I spent one hour for nothing. I lost against Utrecht which previously was two points away from me in 3rd place, thanks to that win they clinch the first place which was mine. Then, I play Dynamo Kiev in their stadium (2nd place, two points ahead of us) and I win 3-2, a result that puts me in promotion spots once again with just 4 matches until the end of the season. After the match, the crash.

@mattmid: I have a massive respect for players such as Hoddle who were able to play so brilliantly in those pitches. The ball barely rolls properly, how difficult would it be to pull of such moves back then?
How are you finding the gameplay on your OBAS Ligaen venture?

@miguelfcp Oh no! Does your save take you back to the previous match? I wonder if you can find if there's a player on Kiev's team that is causing it or something? Did it crash when going back to the menu screen then or in game but at the final whistle?

I'm really enjoying it, with the 4-5-1 they play (I've left the formations alone in both leagues for now, I might tinker but I'm inclined to let them go as they are. Of course if injuries mean I have to change a position or two then I will.) They obviously lack a bit of quality but the bodies in midfield are keeping me in games. I'm getting a foot in and stopping attacks and also passing it around quite nicely with them as well. Cirak, in particular, a young Swedish midfielder, looks quite cultured in amongst them and an AM Nesse is also performing well. As I mentioned with the Striker, Dang, he's willing but I'm not sure about the able part yet!

The goal from Udo for Viking was a lovely individual one, I got brushed aside on the edge of the area and then he cut between my CB and RB who came across to cover and rifled it in the far corner. What a way to lose it in stoppage time! So far, bar the Levanger game, the opponents have been the better team but I've managed to stick in there (almost!) I just lack that cutting edge up front but we'll see how the back up striker's fare when they get their chance. It's interesting that there have been two very late goals against me, I wonder if that's just a coincidence at this stage or the drop off in stamina/mentality late on in the game is part of it.

I was a touch concerned with the first couple of weeks having a lack of goals across the board but the last round had lots. Also, interestingly, having taken a look, there actually is a lack of goals so far in the actual OBAS Ligaen this season for quite a few teams. Some are free scoring but a few are not at all and some are very similar to my save. Tromsdalen have played 4 games in my save 1 goal for 5 against, in real life they have played four and are 1-7 ! Jerv (F-A) are 3-3 and 1-3 for real. Aalesund are the one most apart so far, in real life they are top although have played 5 games where as I' only up to 4 on my save but they are 1-1-2 in my save and 4-1-0 actual. Of course different teams have been played in all cases. Intereresting nonetheless.

I've started on the third tier now. I'll have a complete Norwegian football league at this rate

@mattmid: I lost 4 matches. Really hate it when this happens, particularly when you just played a wonderful session of football. The game crashed right after the final whistle, I think I didn't even get to see the end-of-game match stats. Usually when such thing happens I just open up the disc tray of the PS2 and reinsert the game and it works, this time it didn't so the black screen just kept on going for several minutes until I plugged the console off.

3rd tier? Man, you're a machine! How do you do the stats for the players?

@miguelfcp That's really annoying. Is there no auto save on the PS version or you just didn't have it on? I've only ever played on PC.

Yeah, I could now do a geography quiz on Norway

I use FM stats and then adjust them with my own calculations. Some are adjusted from one stat like stamina for example, some I mix 2 or more FM stats together. I've done three or four different variations over the years but this is the one I like best so far. For instance with technique in this option file I have a base which I've set at 50 and a multiplier of 2. So an FM 1 for technique would give the PES technique of 52 where as a rare 20 would give 90. For each stat I've set a base low figure and then varying multipliers between 1 and 3 for how much variance I want players to have between the worst and best for any particular stat. For the ATT and DEF stats I've used an average of a few stats trying to tie them in to some kind of relevance to the position played and then again used a base figure. I've set the ATT base 5 higher than DEF because on testing it just seems to give the AI that little bit more help when attacking.

For swerve I tried something that I'd never tried before and I really like it. I thought, well let's be honest swerving the ball is not rocket science and even CB's pass it across the pitch to each other with a curve on the pass a lot of the time so let's set it high and see. So I used a base of 70 for that and a multiplier of 2.

Here's a result of some goals that the computer scored against me during testing with the South American teams. One's a lob, but in the other three you can see the curl the computer put on the shot
