The Retro-PES Corner

That's actually interesting for a standalone challenge: if a player gets booked, you release him. The Fairplay Challenge!
@Titch: The Name Game. The Lefties. There's so many new things to try...

Played PES6 in the ML for the first time in a while and actually really enjoyed it. Would really like to make an OF but 140 teams to edit is so much work and that's before I've even decided who to include!

PES 3, my friend, PES 3...

I haven't played ML in a while but do intend to soon. I can't remember now whether the other teams you don't pick ever come into the game - I don't think so right? In which case you only need to make 72. The 4 16 teams leagues and the 8 for your starting Div 2.

On that option file of mine that you tried out I'm aiming to do 72 South American teams to do a master league, done 33 so far, and I also want to do a Scandinavian one as well as I think that could be good and I've almost completed the Norwegian Eliteserien. The only thing is the free agents will come from the rest of the option file so it's what to do with those.

I've also noticed that there are certain leagues the CPU will mix up. I know the English teams don't. I always bear this in mind when structuring the OF.

Here's another idea for a ML. Set all your players to 18 and all their ratings to 50. You must play with this team, no loans, no transfers in or out. You have 12 seasons, until they reach 30 to try to win the lot. Players out of contract who won't re-sign you may replace with a player under 18.

@mattmid: I encourage you to keep going mate, I'd be heavily interested to play with a scandinavian OF. I think it'd be a great idea if we could convince fans from all over the world to create the leagues from their countries in any of the retro-PES games. I dream of playing the Scottish League on PES5, for example; but if we had an andorran fan or a guy from Gibraltar, how cool would it be for him to create those leagues and for us to play a league that neither PES or FIFA have!

Would any of you be interested in playing the Portuguese League in PES5? I've already about 20% of it done, and it's a league that PES has had only since PES2011 I think - also it's poorly made, even nowadays player stats are completely wrong for most teams.
I'm only editing the league itself though, so the OF would be not so suited for a ML but rather for a League mode. This way one saves a lot of time to focus only on the purpose of the database, which is a single competition.

@mattmid: regarding your ML idea, you mean every player's stat would be 50, even keepers? Then your players would be all the same. How about this: come up with a golden number...let's say a random one, 3000. You edit your players (create name, age, height/weight) and you only have 3000 points to allocate to each player's statsheets, you can allocate it however you desire.

@miguelfcp

Thanks, I've done 14 of the 16 Norwegian Eliteserien teams so far, long way to go but I intend to keep at it.

I really enjoy playing with the so called lesser leagues. I made this pes6 option file you might be interested in playing... https://www.evo-web.co.uk/threads/a...nd-swiss-slovakia-and-slovenia-leagues.76615/ Link in the first message is the final complete option file. Also included was the Polish, Albanian and the Macedonian Leagues. All teams/squads are from 16/17. So if you've always wanted to win the Macedonian title with Vardar Skopje now's your chance. :D

I never got around to playing ML on it but played league campaigns on all the leagues and it was great fun.

Here's a link to a pes6 1993/94 Scottish Leagues (all 3 leagues :)) ) that I just made recently. The rest of the file is made up of English teams - The Premier League is complete as well but that's as far as I got as I ran out of steam a bit on it as it was quite a lot of work using CM files for the data. So the other English clubs are still original pes teams data even though team names are changed. They're in order in the option file by league and the format for Scotland that season was 12/12/14 (teams) so you can work out who's in what league from that if you want to play each league by itself. There's also an English League All Stars and Scottish League All Stars team. http://www.mediafire.com/file/dzrdvmcdbnna7f8/KONAMI-WIN32PES6OPTengsco

Obviously on both those the international teams are not playable (well, the countries whose leagues are in it would be but others not.)

I'd enjoy playing a Portuguese league, hope you get it finished, I will certainly play it.

Yes, good idea re ML, I didn't really consider the keeper at the time! But my thoughts on having them all start on 50 was that they should all develop differently so it would be interesting to see how they all get on. Could just have the keeper skill at 60 or something like that to start with.

How did I not know about your OF? That's exactly the type of OF I love, with leagues that you just can't play anywhere else. As read your first post I'm finding out many teams I'd like to use, Vaduz stands out of the pack though. Also the Jupiler League is winking at me, have to try it out. Great job matt, reinstalling now PES6 to play it.

Interesting, didn't think of it that way. But since 50 is such a low rating, maybe instead of reducing your players' age to 18 one could reduce it to 15 for them to have more time to develop.

Hope you enjoy it. I had a great time with it. I'm the same, I love playing with different leagues. The patches people make are excellent but so often it's the same 4 leagues, I just wish more would branch out. I can't 100% recall off the top of my head but I think all teams had in game approximate kits, certainly those that had no kitserver kit ever made (which is most of course!) did and I think I did with those that had but it's possible I didn't as I did have a kitserver with what kits I had found for it.

In that option file section you'll also find a Danish League and Bulgarian League which I made with the help of Omonoiakka. These two leagues are on two different original option files and are in the place of the Team A,B etc teams.

I had a real blast playing the Albanian League, finished fourth in the end with Flamurtari, who I must admit I had never heard of until I made the file. Another thing I enjoy with playing with these lesser teams is misplaced passes, sliced clearances etc. The games when you feel you've really earned the win or feel you deserve better if you lost and so on.

I kept meaning to draw out a big cup between all teams and play it out but again never got round to it.

That's a good idea to set the age to 15 to give them more time to develop. I like that.

Seeing as I've just finished the Norwegian Eliteserien and have jumped right in to starting a league I might as well be the first to get started on Miguel's original idea for this thread. So I'll update the season on here as I go along.

I have decided to take on the challenge of newly promoted Start. In the real word they have taken just 4pts from their first 6 games so it looks like it could be a tough one. I've omitted the Cup and wil be playing a full season of 20 minute games. I've set auto subs as well for a change to allow a 'manager' to make those decisions, but I will be picking the team. I will also keep note of the ratings to give a Player of the Season award at the end.

Not knowing any of the players I've set the team up from their last real 11 from transfermkt.com and I'll go from there.

First up was a home game against Kristiansund.

Kristiansund were playing a 4-5-1 while I was playing 4-2-3-1 (with two wide wing forwards, so effectively a 4-2-1-3 although I have them as deep as allowed for the position) It was a scrappy affair during the first half with Kristiansund swamping the midfield and I was finding it hard to keep possession. When I tried to get it wide to my WF's they could not get the better of the full backs at all. HT 0-0.

Second half was more of the same. Finnbogason , my striker, was hauled off after about 60 minutes having not troubled the keeper at all, although he did trouble a guy in Row N just after half time who got a souvenir ball for his troubles. Salvesen replaced him but added little. To be fair it was very hard to get through the Kristiansund midfield, let alone their defence. For their part, they didn't offer too much going forward but Oplak, my keeper, made a couple of decent saves when they did. Finally the referee put everyone out of their misery and blew for time. FT 0-0. Actually quite an enjoyable game and I really had to work to keep the clean sheet.

Elsewhere Rosenborg kicked off the defence of their title with a 4-1 away win at Sandefjord, whilst there were big wins for Molde (4-0 at Haugesund) and Valerenga (4-0 at home to Ranheim). Tromso also hit 4 in a 4-2 win against Stabaek as the goals flowed on the opening weekend, just not in my game. There were also wins for Stromsgodset, Sarpsborg and Odd with my game the only draw of the opening fixtures.

Next up was home to Bodo/Glimt, fellow promoted team and runaway winners of Adeccoligaen last season(2nd Div). I made two changes to the team, dropping wide man Sigurdarson and Att Mid Christiansen who had a bit of a mare in the opening game. Sandberg and Bringaker replaced them taking the wide roles whilst Skaanes who hadn't done too well out wide slotted into AM.

Bodo started the game well and had a couple of early chances while I again huffed and puffed to get any kind of attacking threat going. Just before half time they took the lead and went in 1-0 up.
Second half was much of the same with Bodo doing most of the threatening and Finbogason again firing blanks and again taken off fairly early. I managed to get a bit of late pressure and I thought I might have grabbed a late equaliser but their keeper made an excellent fingertip save that he pushed onto the bar and out. But that was it and it ended 0-1.

Elsewhere Rosenborg continued to fire on all cylinders winning their first home game 4-1 against Tromso. Sarpsborg (1-0), Valerenga with a fine away win at Molde (1-2) and Stromsgodset (2-0) all kept their 100% records as well. Stabaek and Lillestrom shared 4 goals and Brann got their first win.

Next up our first away game and it's at 100% Valerenga!

Twum a CM, who hadn't exactly inspired in the first two games, with a 5.5 rating in each, made way for Christensen to return to the team, this time playing in his natural position. His midfield partner, Aremu, meanwhile had so far been the standout player in the team. I toyed with dropping Finbogason but Salvesen isn't really anywhere near as good as him so I decided to give him another run out.

Valerenga were quick out of the blocks on a very wet pitch and within 10 minutes Okpal (the other stand out performer so far) had made two great one-on-one saves. I could barely get out of my half and it wasn't long before I found myself a goal down. A little chip over the full back Lowe who'd come out to press the midfielder and coming in behind him was Finne, who smashed a cracking right foot volley from just inside the box into the far side netting, leaving Okpal no chance at all with it. Things didn't look good.

They continued to press and Okpal made another good save before half time. I was pleased to get in at only 1-0, the game could easily have been out of sight.

Second half began and on 49 minutes, Sandberg my winger looped a cross to the far post where Finnbogason beat his man and nodded the ball down just inside the post and out of the keeper's reach. 1-1 ! Eight minutes later the unthinkable happened and I took the lead. Skaanes played in Finnbogason and with the centre back closing in on him from the side he hit it first time, hard and low, skimming off the surface and just evading the keeper's reach, touching the inside of the post before barely spinning over the line! 1-2!

Valerenga pushed forward but Okpal made another good save, this time a full length dive, pushing the ball behind for a corner. Then Sandberg got hacked down out on the wing and with me baying for a card (the ref ignored me) he was carried off with what looks like it could be a bad injury. After that I created little but dug in and with Christensen and Aremu having fine games in Central Midfield they managed to see out the game for a fine and unexpected away win, inflicting a first loss on Valerenga in the process.

Finnbogason got MOM with a 7.0, the same mark as Aremu and Christensen who look to have nailed down the CM partnership for now with that display. Skaanes also performed much better in AM than out wide and got a 6.5 and an assist. Okpal got a 6.0 a bit of an insult for his efforts (why do keepers get such low marks in pes!)

Elsewhere Rosenborg beat Molde 2-0, Sarpsborg beat Sandefjord 2-0 but Stromsgodset lost 2-4 at home to Ranheim, meaning just Rosenborg and Sarpsborg are 100% after three games. Bodo, Kristiansund and Stabaek all won by the odd goal whilst Odd drew with Haugesund.

Bad news after the game though as it's discovered Sandberg will be out for 7 weeks, just as he was beginning to look like a decent option out wide. A letter of complaint about the referee has been sent to the Norwegian FA.

So after 3 games.....

Rosenborg 9 +8
Sarpsborg 9 +4 (yet to concede)

If I could give more likes, I would! Great stuff...I enjoyed your in-depth approach to your experience, I was completely immersed for a moment!

I don't know norwegian football that well but Sarpsborg are a bunch of overachievers so far in your save, right? For them to be as much competitive as Rosenborg, it's impressive. I had never heard of that team, honestly.

Keep us updated, loving it already. I'm also preparing a post about my retro-ML...come on guys, lose your shyness and share your experiences!

ML UNITED – The defaults

I honestly wasn’t planning on doing this. Actually, I was getting things ready for another Deplorables Challenge of mine but it happened I found a PES2009 PS2 disk on my closet that I don’t even remember buying, let alone even play it. Just half of a friendly match convinced me to try out a ML in the game, but I didn’t have any of the PES Shop items unlocked, such as the ML structure editor or the ML starting points tweaker. I decided to go with the flow and just went with the Defaults on an unedited ML structure, with no hopes or objectives but just to have fun and see where it would take me.

Retro Challenge: ML Defaults, no restrictions
Platform: PES2009 PS2
Difficulty: Top Player, 15min.

Season One

Oh, the ML defaults. While you’re reading this, somewhere out there must be yet another kid who is joining Neymar and Ronaldo up front on his myClub team, and I’m here celebrating every time I can put together more than a few passes in a row with this team of underachievers. It’s ridiculous, I should just give up and catch up with the times, right?

But when I looked at the roster for the first time after starting the save, the Default Magic kicked in. I remember every single player of the squad, I even remember their hairstyles and a few forgettable details like Minanda having a left wristband. I knew Stein was a fighter like no other, Jaric was THE freekick specialist, Libermann was a monster at the back, Espimas had hair to die for, and Dodo had hair that looked like a mop and secretly envied Espimas’. The best part is, I haven’t played with this team in almost 10 years. 10 YEARS! I don’t remember what I had for dinner yesterday, I don’t remember my last exciting newgen ML adventure, yet I remembered Castolo’s attack stat or Valeny’s defense stat. No other team has made such an impression on me as the ML defaults, and the 2008/2009 generation was memorable for me because of the healthy mix between the aging “stars” of the squad like Minanda and Castolo and the younger guys who were introduced back in 2008 – I think – like Ettori and Gutierrez.

That mix of older and younger players forces you to make a decision: do you keep on relying on the older players – given most of them are among the best of the squad – or do you replace them rightaway with the youngsters?

I decided on a balanced approach. A 3-5-2 with a DM, a CMF, two wingbacks and an AMF supporting the two strikers. Usual starting 11: Ivarov; El Moubarki, Libermann, Jaric; Stein, Van den Berg, Espimas, Ximelez, Minanda; Gutierrez, Castolo.

+30 years old - Ivarov, Espimas, Ximelez, Minanda, Castolo
Under 23 – El Moubarki, Jaric, Van den Berg, Gutierrez.
On the bench, players like Baumann, Dodo, Ruskin, Ettori, Ordaz and Hamsun completed the core of younger players.

Mostly, I was going to use this first season to understand what players were decent enough to be kept in the squad for the following years and weed out the dead weights. There was no way I was going to get promoted (being in the same division as Zenit, Rennes and Utrecht helped make up my mind about it) and anything else than finishing dead-last in this 12 team division would be considered an amazing season. For now, the main objective was to be competitive and offer a challenge to every team we’d meet.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

The season starts and it’s clear, this process will take time. I’m all over the place trying to get players to respect the tactic (one of the most complex in football) particularly when defending, I’m struggling to get anything done on the offensive side of the game and my players are just noticeably worse than the other teams’ in every level. After just a win in 5 matches – and dreadful performances overall – I decided to make a few adjustments:

- The back-3 was El Moubarki, Valeny and Jaric. Since I don’t have any decent defender, might as well just use a really tall one who could at least dominate the aerial challenges, so Libermann replaced Valeny as the centre-back of the middle.
- Stein and Dodo were our midfield duo, but we needed a box-to-box to carry out play from the back to Minanda and the frontmen. Stein is a defensive player with an outstanding mentality stat, so I dropped Dodo for Van den Berg.

These changes improved the team’s performances indeed, also I was growing accustomed to the defaults so we began winning matches and accumulating a surprisingly high number of points. This escalation led us to our highest point of the season when we met Valenciennes which was 6 points ahead of us in 2th place – only the champion and the 2nd placed team are promoted to the D1. A win here would mean we’d be just 3 points away from the French side, there were 8 matches to go so anything could happen.

We’re able to score twice on them and hold on to the lead until the 85th minute of the match. Then, the dream came crumbling down. Two late goals led to a 2-2 draw and we fail to get closer to promotion. Aftet that match, either the virtual players or me (or both) were so low on morale that we lost the train of promotion altogether with a return to our old ways of losing and drawing matches thanks to dull performances. On the last few weeks of the season I focused more on giving more minutes to youngsters and other players who hadn’t played much throughout the year

7th – ML UNITED – 6W/6D/10L – 4th worst defense and 4th worst attack
D2 cup – First round exit vs. Roda JC (2-2/1-1, away goals advantage)

Not bad, we were 6th for most part of the second half of the season until the last fixture. A mid-table finish is an interesting platform to build upon. Not a big difference between wins and losses and just a few goals between goals scored and conceded, which shows how competitive we were. Our defensive and attacking records were definitely not impressive, though we’d be among the league’s average in both categories if I chose to keep on playing the best starting eleven in the last few fixtures instead of allowing more player rotation.

Best/worst of the season:

+++++ - Ivarov just had his best season I’ve ever seen from him, by far. Espimas is a machine. Gutierrez is as good as I remembered. El Moubarki is actually a sideback but he adapted perfectly to the CB role, by far the best of the back-3.
++++ - Young blood. Besides the first-teamers, Baumann started the season poorly but ended as a very solid defender, Ettori and Dodo were very decent off the bench and Hamsun was one of the top scorers even though he almost always only played no more than 30 min. every game.

Zzzzzz – Defense. We have to be much more solid at the back if we want to ever climb out of the D2. I tried pretty much every combination possible and even if the Moubarki – Libermann – Jaric turned out to be the winning combo, it’s still not enough to be competitive in this league. We need an upgrade here.

Love it!
I have been testing the ML again in PES6 (not on Top Player as I would be destroyed) and I'm trying to find a good formation. I have made changes that have instantly worked, but it all depends on the opposition and the mood of my players. What gets me is every time I have played a new ML over the years, the players seem completely different each time. So it's really hard to pick a team that works for me.
I really want to try it on Top Player but I hate the fact you can have game over. I mean you start with the game with not enough points to cover the salary at the end of the season. If you have a difficult first season which is very likely, game over! Very harsh indeed. I might have to alter the ML starting points at least so I can see what will happen if I am crap.
I can't even remember how many points you get for each thing. I'm guessing you would get nothing if you finished last with all losses and no goals?

Thanks Miguel, it was enjoyable to write it too, added to the immersion as well. Sarpsborg were promoted in 11/12 and seem to have progressed steadily to a third placed finish last season, so maybe they can hang in there, we shall see.

Loved the ML write up. Espimas always used to do well for me and I've always had a soft spot for Minanda. I've always seen him as that lower league creative player plus I scored my first ever free kick on pes with him. Castolo used to frustrate me, he seemed to have something but missed so many chances.

That's a good first season for you I think, a shame it fell away a little after the Valenciennes collapse late on but it seems like you can push on for next season.

@Titch I seem to remember it was 800pts for a win and 400pts for a draw? At least in pes6 anyway but it's been a while that might be wrong.

Yep, spot on, 800 pts for the win in PES 2003 -06 and that just about keeps above water points wise, even if you have only a couple of non-default squad signings pushing up your wages.

Ditto on Espinas, what a player, and Burchet and Nachtegall too, do I sound like I still play the ancient classics ?

@miguelfc, a man after my own heart, playing a much earlier edition of PES on the PS2 now in the same default player Master League format, as you all know, way back, you had to use only default squad and earn points to sign any better players. No player edits as I kind of think that is like tilting a pool table to win, but I have signed four players to get promotion in season 2.

The wages at the start is over 8000. Does that mean you would need 10 wins for that?
In a league where you only play 14 games that seems very tough. Maybe the first season wouldn't be too bad as you start with 5000. I guess it would be beneficial to get promoted straight away to be able to play more games :D

You always get offers for some default squad guys too during the season, some useless ones sell for as much as 4000 and you get rid of their wages too. Like I said, I have only done the only default players once and never got out of Division 2 at the top difficulty level. And near impossible to get promoted in season 1, it is just survival and having enough points in the black at the end to buy players.

What makes the early PES titles great, brutal hard and a win always is earned.

@Titch - If I may give you my opinion, I'm always up for a challenge and testing myself in new ways, so I'd go with Top Player anyway man. I think the pressure of game over is essential for the save to become even more exciting.
As for the PES points, on PES2009 you have the "club popularity" grade. Winning matches to better your popularity grade also brings in more PES points. In season one I accumulated 6000 PES which turned out to be more than enough to pay salaries and even to bring in more players, but consider the D2 on 2009 has 12 teams therefore more fixtures, more money to be earned.

@matt - definitely, I think writing one's experiences makes us more connected to the save itself.
Glad you liked it mate. Minanda is already 37 years old here but he still brings his game, a class act. As for Castolo, he was excellent for me in earlier PES but from 2008 on he just became inconsistent. Now he's able to dominate a match but on the very next one, he completely disappears.

@whohatemedinner - welcome to evo-web mate, love your username already. Do share your adventures with us. As for Burchet, I sold him after 0 matches this season. He was very good for me in a 2008 ML I've done many years ago but this time my insistence on the 3-5-2 meant that there was no space for a winger like him, and he's pretty much of a one-trick-pony so he's gone.

Thanks @miguelfcp , great to know I am not the only retro dude who has stuck with the old classic games of PES. Yeh, Burchet is a side line rusher alright, he has pace and that is it, only player I can never leave out even when I have signed loads of new players is old Espinas, a nugget.
