PES 2018 PlayStation & Xbox Discussion Thread

Konami lost me this year. I can't relate this game to any football I see in real life at all. Before, I've seen the faults but seen enough qualities in the game to keep coming back.

For me, the deal breaker is the acres of space. It's not a problem finding space on the field to pass-pass-pass. And that's THE ONE THING that all football is about, in a Sunday league game or a match at the world cup. A football pitch is a crowded place with 22 players on it trying to find enough space to make passes and runs. But this is no problem in PES. You never have to look up and think: who the heck am I going to pass to? You just robotically keep passing until the final third where it does get a little more interesting.

I do like the mechanics in the final third of the pitch. But everything up until that point is boring. It has the rhythm of a game of basketball, not football.

Agreed. PES has been that way for years now. The PS2 PES games were never that way. Seems like the space opened up when Konami started making the games for the wide screen format, circa 2008...

I'm trying everything that is in my power to save this game. Lately I've lowered stamina to the minimum to all the players in the DB, so that teams are dead tired by the end of the first time.. I must say the effect isn't bad at all, in terms of errors and rythm..

..but unfortunately I've come to the conclusion that there is no repair for the absence of midfield game, for the zero randomness in contrasts and physical duels, for the lack of fouls, for all the teams playing essentially the same, for the cpu cheating without shame on higher levels..

I've resigned myself to the idea that this Pes 2018 needs to be played more like a Dark Souls soccer experience than a realistic one.. where to enjoy it, you need to start with the idea that you'll "fight" any kind of overpowered cpu and bad situation that could happen to you in an environment that in some situation can recreate single soccer episodes quite nicely.. and I mean, when I'm in the mood it can even be enjoyable..
But simulating real soccer? Sorry, but no.. this game is far from that.. unless you only watch the highlights and not the full games, where the midfield battle is indeed EVERYTHING.. and modern soccer era hasn't certainly changed this.. if anything, this game perfectly reflects the multiplayer generation in which we all live in..

He was wrong-footed if you look close, but I agree, could have done better.

But you won’t see many goals scored from inside your own half. Period.

And for the record, IRL, should any keeper be beaten from a shot outside their own half ? Nope, but it happens.

Playing more than 30 mins of this game bores me to death. Every team and player plays the same way. Repetitive and predictable. Annoying "scripting" arcade factor which is completely random and screws you over. I prefer PES 2015 and even PES 2014 than this. This game has no heart or soul and feels like I am playing with robots.

Im loving Pes 2018, so much to learn and a high skill ceiling.

Moving player positioning a touch can have a huge affect (and sometimes not). It is not a simple game , it requires the user to know quite a bit about the controls and when to use them at the right time.

Im playing EPL and I can notice how teams play differently, also star players while being better are not OP better which is more in line with real futebol. The better players can still make a difference but it is not auto-win, I like that about this year's Pes. So many things influence the game (regarding what the user does setting up their team and how they play), great game.

Enjoy !

You wrote my thoughts about PES 2018 my friend. This game requires a long learning curve.
The more I play, the more I learn.

Tactic and patience is everything.

@incas36 You mean my tactics?

Usually i´ve played friendly in legendary mode, against Barça, PSG, Real Madrid. Cheat teams, cheat difficult. But i like :D

I will take a photo, then, i send here.

Important to say that the game mechanics and the AI script which moves the rest 21 players except for the one the human user is controlling is COMPLETELY TOTALLY DIFFERENT in each game mode even for the same difficulty level. The equitation is more simple in exhibition ang gets more complicated in cups/competitions and peaks in MAster League.Since you can go head to head against Legendary do a liitle experiment and try a friendly match with a mediocre team and then go in ML with the same team against whtaever opponent and feel the difference and the non learning curve/endless loop.
Especially this year comparing AI difficulty in exhibition and masterleague is like we say in greek mathematics "It is ΆΤΟΠΟΝ " (use google) or its latin translation "reductio ad absurdum".
In exhibition and only there,i agree with you the game vsCOM is pretty decent.

@incas36

My tatics setup:

Attack Instructions: possession game, short pass, center, flexible, Support Range: 1 bar.

Deffensive Instructions: Frontline Pressure, Wide, Agressive, Deffensive Line: 8 bars, Compactiness: 3 bars.

Adv. Instructions: Tiki-Taka, Gegenpress, Deep Def. Line.

Formation: 4 (lb, cb, cb, rb), 2 (dmf, cmf), 1 (amf), 3 (lwf, cf, rwf/ss).

Sure you can feel the frustration. Its a 10 minute game in which is supposed to have fun. How much fun you think your opponent has when he can just watch you wasting 70 percent of the playing time by just passing the ball between your defenders? He cant do anything against it,because he can only control one player. So you could easily pass the ball on your half the whole 90 minutes if you want to. Playing this way is pathetic, childish, stupid and unfair. Would you like a match when you would be on the other side? Would you have fun just watching your opponent wasting time on his own half?Dont think so.

No one asked you to play in your own half for 90 minutes. The point is to keep your head cool and don't just smash buttons just coz you see pressure coming. Learn how to endure it rather than panic pass it to the next guy (and lose it in the process).

And what most people forget is, if he runs at you and you start running too, the field becomes smaller, you two will meet earlier than if you'd just stand there not moving. It's as simple as that.

Also, I'm against using full speed always. I always leave a little speed in my tank, in case I need a speed burst to take a large stride away from defender. Because if you are running at full speed, you have nothing left for a speed burst. You can't run faster than you can run fast. You can't shift up a gear if you are already in top gear.

For example, the first goal here. I saved my speed burst for the last stride, to drive into my shot power.

If only the stats meant something still. Other than fatigue, they are really geared to affect the OVR formula.

In terms of other things you can try, I was able to get the spacing issue a bit better by manually moving their positioning. Here's the video to reference. It's not the best solution in the world, but at least it creates some midfield battles and more difficulty in the defensive third.

Thank you. Yes, the acres of space and what you said about 22 players trying to find space is so key. Space should not be predetermined, it should be created. This is what makes the outstanding players...outstanding. Look at Messi against Betis yesterday. That stands out as simply outstanding because of how little space he had.

The thing is, PES has been there before with less space. I hope this gets addressed. For now, as posted above, the main solution I can come up with is manually adjusting player's positions on the field.

Beautiful football, composure personified.

Since being promoted to the EPL, I actually dropped to -2 speed gameplay, so much better, then winning it on Professional, Zero assist passing and winning a thriller CL final 4-3 on penalties.

I love the variation in passing, Dribbling mechanics, the best Zero Assist passing yet and the incredible goals achievable.

My biggest gripe is the lack of variation in the oppositions play compared to previous versions. Although if you change the way you normally play you can effect that. But that still isn’t good enough.

I signed Mo Salah and I swear he’s producing the same form for me as he is IRL. His Dribbling and feet are a different class and all of the goals he’s scored are simply different class. His debut goal was football porn.

Here is another one I liked from last night, not Mo’s but still a cracker.

mate i really liked the first video, maybe a silly question but how do you shield the ball like that? impressive stuff

For discussion...

Alan (AKA Curdstar) has posted this article on WENB about being a "PES-casual".

I have a great deal of respect for Alan, truly, he's a decent poster and a decent guy too. But I totally disagree with the article - to me, the other game literally exists for the casual audience - it may as well be called "Mass-Market Sports Title #1" - and PES used to be considered closer to a simulation (not entirely sim, but a lot closer to that than an arcade experience).

If anything, the game is already more casual now than ever before (by which I mean, assisted settings are becoming more assisted - and a player's stats can only be demonstrated to their fullest when you're playing with assistance, otherwise you'd be able to make any defender pass like Beckham with enough practice).

However - the only reason I'm bringing this up... Adam has responded to the article on Twitter, saying he's "smashed it" and agrees with it. Which is pretty concerning to me, as someone who buys PES because I want a serious football game.

Am I being closed-minded?

I challenged Adam on it and we had a brief discussion. I really don't see how Alan has smashed it. he's just being Alan trying to be disruptive and making it about him just like he did on here before he got banned. If you have a look at his tweet towards footy_united you can see his true intentions, calling them elitists because they dare to have an opinion that isn't like his. i'm all for opening up discussions but not through Alan's nonsense.

Your not being closed minded.

With Adam's move to Japan, would it be fair to say he's in a position of influence?

It is a legitimate concern for him to seemingly agree with that fluff piece.

This game has made realise the clear disconnect about the series and football games in general.

The 'article' is written by someone with an agenda doing a bad job of masking their true feelings about a group of people he's supposedly trying to bring together.

Some are offended when one says they want a simulation. How dare you?
