Game Informer Magazine subscribers are about to get their hands on the September issue, and we have the first look at the cover right here. This month, we give you the details on Borderlands, a sci-fi RPG/shooter that will feature four player online co-op. Gearbox Software, the company behind the huge project, is well known for their Brothers in Arms series of games.

With a tag line like "Diablo meets Mad Max," how can you not take the bait? Gearbox Software's Borderlands is the cover story in the September issue of Game Informer. Described as an RPG-shooter, with 4-player online co-op support, Borderlands appears to mimic the space gansta aesthetic that was so brilliantly captured in the dusty Gibson films of yesteryear -- not unlike id's new project Rage. How Diablo elements play into the dune buggy battlin' should be explained once the full cover story has been perused.

Developer Gearbox has earned critical props for its Brothers in Arms games, which are often overlooked in the rotting heap of World War II shooters. The latest in that series, Hell's Highway (due in November), showed great promise during an E3 demo, but once again, was lost in the swirl of game previews, and has an uphill battle at retail, facing a very competitive holiday lineup. But if Gearbox stays dedicated to top-tier technical and production qualities, as seen in Brothers in Arms, than Borderlands could be the commercial success this studio is capable of developing. This is one to watch.

Will post the scans when i get them.

2K Games picks up Borderlands, Gearbox's new shooter
borderlandsscreen.jpg

2K Games, who are on the cusp of releasing another "groundbreaking" FPS next week with BioShock, have just announced that they'll be publishing Gearbox Software's latest, Borderlands. Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K, gushed, "By utilizing revolutionary new technology to create thousands of unique, randomly generated missions, weapons and situations, Borderlands will raise the bar for next gen action games."

Part of that raised bar is also the game's cooperative online experience, which allows for four players to "share the same game experience simultaneously" by joining or leaving the game at any time. Hate other people? Go through in single-player mode (you grump). If you think this sounds like a more action-oriented Hellgate: London, you're not alone. Borderlands will be available Holiday 2008 for PS3, Xbox 360, and Games for Windows.

GC 2007: Borderlands First Look
More guns than could ever imagine.

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/814/814779p1.html

There are over a half of a million different guns in Borderlands. That seemed to be the main selling point in this first public showing of Gearbox Software's next original IP. Of course, guns aren't the only thing Borderlands has to offer. It's also a four player, co-operative sci-fi shooter with a hefty dose of RPG elements and a bit of Diablo inspiration thrown in for good measure. It also has over 500,000 guns.

Half a million guns? Jack Thompson where you at!

Liepzig Impressions:

It's funny what can easily turn one on (and off) to an upcoming video game. In the case of Gearbox Studios' just announced Borderlands, it was Game Informer's teaser cover blurb that described the 4-player co-op shooter as "Diablo meets Mad Max" that whet my nerd appetite. Gearbox themselves pitched the shooter as "Mad Max meets Indiana Jones."

Reality, however, leveled off my personal expectations, as the game seems to be more accurately described as "Hellgate: London meets Firefly meets Pitch Black". That's the reality of it, a franchise step down that's very grounding. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Jesus. No. While Borderlands may not be a wet dream blend of two uber-franchise favorites, it still has plenty going for it—over 500,000 guns for example. Bullet point alert!

Half a million guns may seem like a bullshit claim, but it's the Diablo II-style item randomization system that makes such a thing possible. The debug build of Borderlands that Gearbox showed us had a nice cheat that let the dev team fire an endless stream of random guns when the Xbox 360's select button was held down. After showering the ground with a few dozen guns, just to illustrate how different they all were in appearance, one could see where the Diablo came in.

In addition to thousands upon thousands of firearm combos, ones that vary in capability based on their stock, color, material, sight, barrel size, chamber and a handful of other stats, it was clear that gun nuts will drool over the game's gun gamble feature. There's clearly plenty to play with here.

That randomized content also applies to the game's other usable items, including armor, helmets and even whatever you've got stashed in your garage. We saw a half-dozen or so unique looking vehicles, some with mounted turrets, some with tank treads, all of which sported a well-used look.

Borderlands also features randomized "level" layouts when one is removed from the New Haven's confines. We were shown some of the game's co-op action as two of the Gearbox guys tooled around in one of the ATVs, encountering an unfriendly group of fellow settlers looking to make their own fortunes on the planet of Pandora. This ultimately played out with an firefight that saw the characters Gearbox controlled taking out a trio of bandits in a Mad Max-style battle caravan.

While some of your encounters will be with your fellow human transplants who have sought shelter at the edge of space, you'll also come face to face with Pandora's original inhabitants, the Rack.

The Rack's emergence from hibernation will drive much of the game's storyline and we were shown a few moments of how some of their reveal will pan out. I'll save you the spoilers, but Borderlands looks like it will satisfy sci-fi fans with its narrative.

The only complaint I'll issue about the game's presentation is that the visual design didn't quite live up to my individual aliens-plus-desert bandits tastes. I was genuinely hoping for Mad Max 80s-era flamboyance, all shoulder pads, facepaint, grime, and feathered feral mohawks. Instead, some rather me-too futuristic character design prevailed. Probably shouldn't have gotten my hopes up—it's dangerous.

Plus, I saw that giant vagina mouth monster coming a mile away, guys. And I really wish I hadn't.

Just got the latest Gameinformer and this game sounds amazing.
Quotes:
"My GOD! Why is this board dead? Why isn't it flooded with people exclaiming about its Diablo style weapons and armor (ie. Unique armor and weapons, so many so you never really see the same guns twice?!)? This is the first game to get me excited in A LONG time. Yes Halo 3 will be awesome. Yes Bioshock is awesome. Yes GTA IV will be awesome. Crysis... etc... etc... But why don't people know about this game?! From the graphics, gameplay, and story (which seems to be a little hidden and may well be predictable yet enticing) this game is a sure fire bet for breeding and inspiring new gameplay mechanics that gamers look for."

" I agree. This game looks just amazing. They had me at the 500,000 weapons. They had me at 500,000 items and accessories. But to also have vehicle customization. God, there goes my social life."

My scanner is not working but here are the scans i promised you.

Borderlands release date set for October 20

It's approaching that time. Development cycles are coming to an end, the summer trade-show circuit is in full swing and Christmas is fast approaching. That means publishers are starting to nail down release dates for this year's must-have X-mas present. Borderlands is the latest game to be dated and it will be available to grab off store shelves in October, as planned. October 20, to be exact.

That's the American date, anyway. Europeans can expect to wait three days more to get their hands on Gearbox's RPG shooter with a much improved art style, on October 23.

I'm surprised this hasn't had any chatter since July, a lot of people are saying it's their GOTY ahead of Batman and Uncharted 2

Going to give it a try tonight, single player is supposed to be quality but if any of you want to do co-op sometime, I'd be happy to join a group :)

I know what you mean about the cel-shading but the graphics are quite stylised.

It doesn't look like erm, perhaps as crisp and flawless as some cel-shaded titles do; i mean that as a plus point as well. I mean the graphics are still "dirty" enough for it's wild-west, mad-max style setting if you get me.

It'd be worth having a nosey at the game in motion in person if you get the chance as you-tube and even HD vids you view online don't quite capture it.

Tried it last night and it's good fun! Certainly has a Fallout to it with the setting and with the RPG elements, but is more like a FPS in the way you shoot and move around. The graphics are also excellent and fit the game well.

I keep running out of ammo on my rifle though and having to use shitty pistols :( I have picked up one pistol with a scope which is rather good though

Definately going to keep with this.

Just reading others opinions on this and it's got me pretty hyped for playing this again tonight :)

Not sure whether I want to start again already though as one of the other characters is a sniping specialist :JAY:

Been on it for over an hour now, what a game this is! I love the graphics especially, it's very different to what I expected.

So far so good, will update soon.

Lost track of time playing this last night

What character are you, Matt? I chose the soldier but I'm thinking I might start again as Lilith (who has invisibility) or Mordecai (who is a sniper specialist). I'm only on level 10, maybe 3 hours in, so not TOO bad if I start again.

I'm the hunter right now, this is SO ADDICTIVE!

The hunter is the sniper, right? So is he crap at using rifles/pistols normally then?

I'm still not sure whether to start again  I unlocked the third quick-weapon slot and my special ability, the turret, can be pretty useful. But sniping is awesome, and turning invisible should be pretty handy :)

Did you have any problems with Bone Head?

I found a sniper rifle which sets him on fire if I got a critical shot so kept aiming for his head, took out his shield and then hammered him with my rifle. Took me about 30 mins as I was way under-leveled for fighting him so I decided to go around killing Skags and doing some other missions to level up.

Nope, that was Nine-Toes, Bone Head is the guy in a spot right next to your "base". You come out of your shelter area and turn right, then do a right again down a small walkway and he's in some kind of yard, couple of buildings around the side and a walkway which I stayed on and sniped him from :)

It's the mission where you need to get a part off him to fix the travel system ...

I know who you're talking about, but no I haven't beat Bone head yet. I'm still doing the part with the artifact.

Great game though, but it's quite difficult! Dags, do you have the game on the PS3 or the 360?

Artifact?

360 mate, feel free to join my game if you see me playing :) I've just found out that you can set the game open to friends to drop in and out so I'll make that setting later :D

Dags I was a bit confused on where I was in the game. But I just started on the second map basically, finished everything on where we started.

Ah right, you're a bit ahead of me then. I've got to some some job to do with clearing a farm for that blind guy, and there's a fair few jobs on the message board which I'm going to do.

Just unlocked the jeep and did that jump over the the broken bridge to open a gate.

Two posts from another forum, sum it up well for me:

It's not that sort of RPG, more like Diablo, where the only RPGing is a story and character development. In fact you could say it's more like CoD were "XP" flies off people when you shoot them :thumbsup And the levelling is like Perks, sort of

Impressions? Very little RPGing, lots of shooting, a good amount of looking at this gun or that gun, and trying to decide which you want to use, some exploring. As a shooter it ticks all the contemporary boxes except no cover mechanic, and generally plays somewhere between Rainbow Six and Unreal Tournament - yeah thats vague, but it depends on the level of the things you're fighting, some are so tough you need to be careful, peaking out from cover, popping a few shots off, duck back. Others enemies are so easy you can run n gun thru 10 of them giggling as you do
