Whos the best modern day free kick taker

Exactly. Ronaldo really shouldn't be considered among top at all. It's as funny as doing it with Roberto Carlos.

And guys like Zidane were good but nothing to write home about.

Kaka I don't even remember scoring a few. I'm sure he did but again for me doesn't belong in this thread. Easily 50/100 better than him probably. Someone like Rui Costa and Sneijder are easily better than those and they weren't THAt great in FK's either.

ok so lets shorten the list again and take out the average guys

Mijhalovic
Juninho
Nakamura
Van hoojidonk
Beckham
Recoba

Perhaps:
Ronaldinho
Moravcik
Aliyev

Yeah that list looks much better.

Rogerio Ceni the Sao Paulo GK should be there too in my opinion though! He's scored more FK's than some of the people mentioned in this thread combined!

What about guys like Koemann or Fernando Hierro? Didn't they used to take all the Freekicks and penalty kicks and also score quite a few despite playing as DMF or CB?

Well I thougth we are doing mid 90s-present day.

I think Koeman etc are last generation?

And how good or average was Roanldihno? Rivaldo?

Good call on Marcos Assuncao!! Totally forgot about him.

I already mentioned Ceni Pipa and yah he should certainly be there.

In my opinion, Ronaldiho and Rivaldo were good. Nothing spectacular at FK's. Good though like many others.

What about John risse and Morten Pedersen...also just good but not amazing.consistent...oh and shoudl pirlo be on the list or del piero?

so list is now:

Mijhalovic
Juninho
Nakamura
Van hoojidonk
Beckham
Recoba
Ceni
Assuncao

Perhaps:
Ronaldinho
Moravcik
Aliyev

man he's total shit comparing those specialists. dont get how and why he's even mentioned in this thread.

regarding the list imo you can comfortably add pirlo and del piero they are more or less up there with those guys but really as the time goes on you might end up with just so many players listed there so I'd advise you to just cut it with few players as much as you can eliminate. imo juninho, van hooijdonk, mihajlovic, beckham and assuncao are a class above the others. the fk takers I consider below them are indeed great in every sense of the word but the number of them is just getting too many. too many choices always cause trouble. :)

New stats, C.Ronaldo in 2012 is 32 free kicks for 0 goals

whre u get these stats?

mm Nakamura and Recoba IMO seem to always score often when they took them.

But also can one judge a set piece taker on crossing and corner ability. I guess thats a different subject but doing so beckham and Nakamura etc also get a lot of assits whereas yor Van hoojidonks not really.

well if you say so.. :FISH:

having had nakamura and van hoojidonk at celtic I feel that Nakamura scored more and IMO was a better set peice taker. Though Van hoojidonk had much more power.

However, IMO Van hoojidonk seemed to get even better at free kicks after he left Celtic...

Recoba, never was a 1st choice team player nor 1st choice free kick taker at inter..if he was a regular starter for a club and no.1 set piece taker I think he would score maybe most ever Free kicks per season! He scored so many free kicks yet started so few games.

True.

Also if we're gonna look at the 'assist' stuff off freekicks/corners and delivering great balls/crosses off them, then undoubtedly two of the finest in Premier League right now are Sebastian Larsson and Joey Barton. These guys deliver very dangerous balls from setpieces on a consistent basis.

Seb Larsson is probably one if not the best crosser in the league as well where as Barton is quite good but does more the 'lofty' corners rather than as much 'bend' on them. Effective as hell nonetheless as he really knows where to put the ball and does so consistently.
