How did the universe begin?

shit this is deep, there are a lot of good points and stuff people have posted is similar to things ive been thinking myself recently. its too long for me to say what i think, my thoughts about religion are quite confused.

i have one question for any athiests tho, do you believe that when you die thats it? like the lights are turned out in your head, or you continue to have a conscience? its quite a scary thought that when we die thats the end, thats cos up to now ive never really questioned religion, its just something i accepted.

Yeah - I don't believe in Religion etc.

But I can't get my head around it just ending! How can that happen?!

It hurts my brain thinking about it and its quite scary.

Don't believe in heaven or hell. When we die, we die. Our corpse decomposes and thats the end of us, the same with other creatures. People are born everyday and basically replace us, the ones who die.

i think its being young that makes me scared of that, after a long and mediocre life i'll probably welcome the ending. ive been thinking more about spirits recently, like reincarnation, i know im clutching at strings here but i need a lil bit hope for now until i come to terms with it all ending one day...

but then i think sometimes theres just no way all this was one big accident, thoughts and feelings, good and evil, shit like that makes me believe.

one more thing, are ghosts real? i mean a hell of a lot of ppl think theyve seen them, either they all crazy loons or are just desperate for a sign i dunno, i wish my house would get haunted for a bit so i know they exist. and what about them potatoe things in the paper, that looked like a man and a woman. coincidence? i think....maybe :-k

If the universe is expanding, what is it expanding into? And if there's a limit to how far the universe can expand, what exists beyond that limit?

And if the universe was created by a big bang, what came before the big bang and what comes after? If the universe continually explodes, expands, contracts and then explodes, which universe are we?

I'm pretty sure that no matter how long humans exist, we'll never know the answers.

There's probably life other than ours in the universe, but again, I doubt we'll ever find it. We're all pretty much stranded in our own backyards!

Don't know if that's gotta do with this thread but I got two deja vus this morning... creepy

The scientific explanation for Deja Vu is that your brain misfiles current images in your "long term" memory, when they should be in "present events".

This is the reason why you're always convinced you already saw something a long time ago, but never have any of the details that surround it (when, where etc.)

Makes sense, but I was a bit disappointed when I found that out!

WOW the explanation is that simple! It makes sense not like the matrix flaw or something...

So I guess questions are being answerds, all we need its time.
Like the centre of universe, flat earth etc...
One day we will know if we are alone.

But the after death question I think will never be answerd, well nobody got back yet...

Yeah that thought is scary, we don't know where it ends or indeed if it actually does end at all. I have been trying to get my head around it for years! I think its hard for the human brain to understand because on our earth there are boundaries everywhere we go. In the room we are in, in the country we are in etc. Thats why to try and believe that the universe may go on for eternity is something we all find difficult to understand.

I firmly believe there is alien life out there. The universe is so big that for us to be the only intelligent life form somehow doesn't add up. They could be way behind us in terms of development or they maybe lightyears ahead but they are out there.

A "cousin" of mine, she was about 4 or 5 I think had chronic pain in her arm. So for quite some time her and her parents went to doctors and specialists all over the place to see if they could cure it. After many attempts and check ups nobody could find anything but every night when she had gone to bed she would get these pains.

After quite some time the conclusion was made that it had something to do with her surroundings, her room/house. And again test were made to she if it was some kind of allergy or something. Again the results showed nothing till someone proposed, after having tried everything else, to get a medium in to see if there was something "other worldly" in the house that was causing the problems. More likely with the person in question being a child and more open to those imputs.

So they had a medium come round and check out the house. What he/she found was a ghost of a man who was looking for his mother. The house had previously been owned by the mother before this family had moved in. The ghost, looking for anwsers had been pinching the young girls arm to get an anwser/attention. So the medium communicated with the ghost to say that his mother no longer lived there and the "pain" in the arm went away.

This medium session was done when the child was somewhere else to not scare her so she also didnt know about it.

I was told that story when I was 16 when we were visiting the family and for some reason that story came up. I have no reason to think they were lying or that there was any reason for it. Im sceptical, as its my nature and because I dont believe in the afterlife. But it makes you wonder.....

The theory Ive always had was based on, I think is superstring theory, which proposes that there are multiple dimension (10 dimension of space and one for time) which are "sheets" in space floating. They ripple like a sheet on water if you will and sometimes these ripples would overlap with the other dimensions. Connecting them and allowing elements to become visible between the two. Which allows for the common example that "ghosts" are always doing mundane, daily things; like sitting in a chair, walking to another room, etc. Within the framework of what I believe in that fits in very well and also explains the "ghosts" without it being religious and "of god".
