For me, i think Juninho, also a lot of people talk me about Sinisa.

Shold be nice have some statistics.

And no, Roberto Larcos isnt a good free kicker, he makes 1/10000.

no doubt.

Funny how people are thinking about players who are still playing.

A couple of candidates:
Platini
Van Hooijdonck
Mihajlovic
Branco

I'm sure, i have forgotten quite a lot of aces...

But it certainly isn't Juninho...

usually i don't post in theese threads as i find quite boring to establish theese kind of rankings. we could name hundreds of players for weeks who were great in free kicks.
it's already hard to compare "still playing players" (actually i'd say it isn't just hard, it's also useless and silly).... how can we expect to establish a plausible "all time ranking"???.
we're young. there are hundreds of players, of great players we never saw playing, hundreds of players we don't even know.

just to make an example, just 2 guys named mihajlovic, who used to score on free kicks like they were penalties.... just one of u named le roi platini and Hagi. Nobody mentioned ronaldinho, zidane, del piero, guardiola, pirlo, recoba, totti, valeron, okocha, baggio, mancini , almeyda, Djorkaeff.........

and i guess many of u don't even remember rivelino, eder, zico, falcao, giannini, sivori, corso....

that's why i think it's impossible to establish a faithful individual ranking in football (best free kicker, best playmaker, best cb, best scorer....)

nontheless this thread makes me remind of a nice anecdote (and that's the reason why i'm writing this post).
1985, napoli - juventus. the ref establishes an indirect free kick inside the box, juventus players placed their "wall" too close to maradona (there should be 9 meters between the ball and the wall, juventus players were probably 3 meters far from the ball). Giordano get mad with the ref, asking him to presuade juventus players to respect the regular distance.... but Diego said "shut up Bruno, i'll score anyway"... then bruno giordano calmed down and witnessed (as all of us) one of the greatest moments in football history. A sweet caress to the ball, the sphere flies over juventus wall and then fantastically get down, as it was remote controlled.
in less than 11 meters that ball followed an impossible trajectory.

that was my first time at San Paolo stadium :)

here it is... unfortunately this replay is awful and u can't really appreciate this free kick from this point of view, but it's still better than nothing. nontheless it's quite weird you tube hasn't a decent replay of one of the most famous free kicks in history

Evidence

He can bang em.

He can place em.

He can curl em.

He don't need no back lift.

He is the best IMO period -

The one vs Bayern sums it up for me.

A hat trick of free kicks in bloody impressive!

Is it true that Pierre van Hooijdonk scored a FK in a game then got another but the opposition tried to be clever and not put up a wall so Pierre decided to get some teammates to make a wall and he still scored?

Shouldnt this thread be called "Best Free Kicker In YOUR Lifetime?" I didnt get to see the legends like Zico and Platini etc...

For me its got to be David Beckham. I refer to England Vs Greece in 2001 at Old Trafford. Becks under huge pressure, England to go through if he gets this right...

He whips it perfectly over the wall and in the back of the net!! keeper no chance!

Of the modern era, it's hard to argue with Mihajlović

Record holder for freekicks in Serie A (27):

Hattrick of freekicks in one game:

Don't know enough about the legends to comment properly. Zico was supposed to be a bit tasty right?

i remember that hattrick :) that year sinisa scored on 9 free kicks in a row, if i do remember well. :)

about Zico, well, he is unanimously considered as one of the greatest football players of all times..... saying he was "tasty" it's like saying zidane was a pretty good player

it looks like we're living in the "wiki-era", so here u are...

I completely agree and also that it should be 'best you have ever seen'.
I have been watching football since 1987 and without doubt, Mihajlovic and Juninho are the 2 best I have ever seen.

There is no real point in naming all these players when they can't realistically be considered in this thread as the best free kick taker. Even Pirlo and Recoba are nowhere near the best.
(Notable mentions for Beckham, Zola, van Hooijdonk and Koeman.... probably missed a few others, but none are as good as the above 2 anyway)

I know it's all about opinions and I respect others opinions, but come on... is it even worth mentioning someone like Ronaldinho, Almeyda, Roberto Carlos or Dkorkaeff in the 'best free kick taker' thread (let alone loads of the others), when they are quite clearly not in the same class as Sinisa or Juninho?

i see your points mate and i respect your likes, but as u correctly said, rankings like theese also involve our own personal likes, our football knowledge. that's why i think it's impossible (and useless too) to establish "who was the best" (free kicker, foward, cb, midfielder). we can't even establish a faithful list of world class players.

by mentioning all those players i didn't mean to establish a ranking, i didn't mean to say djorkaeff was on the same level of sinisa or juninho, i was just mentioning some of the greatest free kickers that came into my head.... actually i couldn't even try to do a ranking as i wouldn't be able to say if zico was better than juninho or if rivelinho was better than sinisa or if socrates was better than maradona (just talking about free kicks, of course).

i could just mention a list of players, in no particular order.... and also that list wouldn't be faithful or unanimously sharable, as i could forget many other great players who i consider world class in free kicks (in my previous post, for example, i forgot to mention socrates).

actually the only reason why i wrote that post was to talk about that great maradona's free kick in 1985 as it was a nice memory that came into my head reading this thread :)

Lo zio, of course threads like this are useless, that's why i love them...it's useless pub talk but some people are coming up with players who bring sweet memories...how could i forget Rivelino...he must be one of the greatest free kick takers ever. And then there was Arie Haan and his rockets...jesus...and of course i forgot Koeman also one of the best ever...and in that same Barcelona team they had Guardiola and also Stoichkov who could perform a mean free kick...

And i even forgot Gianfranco Zola...jesus...

But i don't agree with "il principe"...Giannini is maybe my all-time favourite player but i don't consider him one the great free kick specialists...

Branko Strupar Coopz??? Come on...are you kidding...if you really want to mention a Belgian player why not Ludo Coeck, Luc Nilis or Wesley Sonck...but don't mention Strupar...

Still Sinisja is the best...

nice reply, Gerd ;)

you're probably right about Giannini too. I just saw an old roma match a few days ago and this probably influenced my post.

p.s. wow mate, u also remember his nickname! :D:applause:

Forget Maradona you wait till you see Tony Gale's free kick against Liverpool in the 1989 Littlewoods cup for West Ham

well Steevio, everybody has his own heroes. i had the chance to know Diego, i've been a "ball boy" at San Paolo stadium many times, i also did a few passes to him when i was 11..... so u'll understand it's impossible to replace him in my memories :D

Bruv... please... I know who Zico is. I'm OF COURSE referring specifically to his free kick ability as my tender years betrayed me ever seeing the man play.

But yeah long live Wikipedia!

I thought by the sheer mentioning of Tony Gale in the same sentence as Diego Maradona, you'd see I was joking ;)
