Greatest footballers ever? No way, atleast 100 players were better than him. Greatest footballing poster boy, yes. Beckham is overrated because of his big name, but it's not really his fault.

Nope, just being realistic. What Waddle said was very hyperbolic. :P

I'm not denying Beckham was a great footballer, but he wasn't one of the best ever.

Beckham at time's was underrated, to say a player is overrated because of his name but to came 2nd twice in world player of the year to ranked higher than likes of zidane, figo, shevchenko, henry sounds ridiculous; Imagery has nothing to do with such, i wouldn't say he was in top 5-10 greatest ever but his vision, passing which was something very few player's if any could match and even to this day. He was fantastic at time's and he will go down as a great. Some of my greatest childhood growing up was having the privilege to watch beckham grow and improve.

Maybe bit bias being a united fan but i know having watched him week in week out, he is in no way overrated, only in his older year's he didn't quite have the legs to run up and down the wings in same fashion and have the same impact as once used to but at 38, who would? I'm talking about 14 years i seen him play, not the other 6.

Just take a look at his club vita: ManU, Real, the Galaxy, Milan and PSG. You don't play for these clubs, if you're not gifted with tons of talent. And he was captain of England, one of the most glorious national teams in the world for ~6 years. And of course he has these talents, I'll never forget this assist here, it's pure world class and I've never seen anything like this afterwards:

And that goes not only for that absolutely mesmerizing pass, it goes for Becks himself as well, I haven't seen a player like him and I think I'll never see one in my whole lifetime.

You are all overrating him, just like the English media, because of his personality. He was a fantastic player, but one of the best ever is massively overrating him. He just isn't up there. In that Galactico team alone there are five players who I rate higher: Casillas, Raul, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo and Roberto Carlos. All those players have achieved more than Beckham.

In my opinion, it's not always about pure medals (achievements). Beckham was one of the most naturally gifted players in the last few decades, and each of the players you mentioned is also very talented - but if you compare just these few players here, you'll see that each one has his own unique talents, and that's what I admire the most in Becks. He is unique, and his unique talent is unprecedented and unseen as for now, as most of us can agree (I think?). Oh, and I just wanna quote Rio Ferdinand on this:

Beckham had a right foot like a left foot - it was a sweet, sexy type, made a beautiful sound when he hit the ball! Energy, precision, passing, goals.

Note to the youngsters: Becks had all the attention/media you could ask for but one thing never changed and that was his dedication to practice.

Speaks volumes, doesn't it? :)

I'm not denying at all that Beckham was a very, very, good player but he isn't one of the best of all time.

That last paragraph summarizes him very good to me: Always thought and think currently that he was/is a fighter since the day he was "awarded" that one red card against Argentina in '98. And I watched his outstanding performance against Greece in 2001(which was one of the best performances of a single footballer I ever witnessed, comparable to what Klinsmann did against the Netherlands in '90 f.e.) so often and he's one of the last true idols in football for me as he always stood up and fought for his aims in football. He lived for the sport and these are the true heroes in sports to me. That's why I think he was and is one of the greatest players ever.

And from a bootpack-makers pov: How many players were so special to get a unique collection? I only can think of three others alongside Beckham: Ronaldinho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. :D

I would agree that Beckham did have the right mentality, but that doesn't make him one of the best, his overall skills and achievements do, and Beckham was a great player but not one of the best ever.

Comparing him to other players is unfair (and that goes both ways) Beckham was Unique. How many players can you recall with that same style? Not the most flashy player in terms of skill but he had his own imprint on the game, you could tell whenever he was on the pitch: Hey it's Beckham!

I know you'd say that. :)

But Ronaldo didn't had a unique boot type. He "just" was the one to use the newest Vapor model and was promoted as "R9" boot, but he never had unique design and/or boots. ;)

Beckham was the best of the failed 'golden generation'

A player who tends to be either vastly overrated or vastly underrated.

He was a brilliant player, certainly one of the best passers/crossers and freekick specialists there has been in the game. He carried England on a number of occasions, and was/is a decent bloke.
