There's reason to believe that FIFA 18's Gameplay Lead Producer Samuel Rivera Silva has reduced 18's defensive AI.
Guess who are the culprits who made the 1v1 system that has been around since FIFA 20? ;)

Yep. David Rutter and Gary Paterson are known to have come into the FIFA team saying "PES is a better football game than ours, I would rather play PES, we need to make our game more like PES".

His team made FIFA a more football-like experience, it felt more grounded and realistic than ever, and sales overtook PES.

Problem is, sales have gone up every year since, largely thanks to FUT, and what do FUT players want (as far as EA are concerned - through, in my opinion, some very flawed feedback gathering and assumptions based on usage data)?...

Pick-up-and-scoreability, no "AI defending" (which just translates to "no defending")... A hockey game.

The glory years are gone and I don't see them coming back. Nor do I see anyone serious taking them on at their own game due to licensing.

But I honestly, truly believe (and not just because of how badly I want it) that if they did a total reset and focused more on realism once again, it would feel like such a breath of fresh air to every player, it would be a hit. Every FIFA player and streamer says they hate the game (largely because hate equals views - just look at the news - but there's truth to the fact that a lot of people play it because they just have to win at something).

I believe Gary Paterson was also the driving force behind FIFA Street because he saw the value of a realistic game and an arcade game as two separate ventures.

Looking more into Paolo Rigiroli, I find it interesting he was the technical lead for arguably one of the best in the series, FIFA 16, then kept the same position as the game moved to Frostbite. The interesting part is that now is the Director of Engineering for Frostbite. Seems like a well played career move.

I was imagining the actual financial reasons EA could make a separate realistic game now, and I was thinking, how Football Manager can be used to scout real players in real life, what if EA created a realistic (enough) simulation of real life football, for clubs to use to test out tactics and players. This probably sounds like a fantasy, but I can’t think of other business reasons they might do it… but that sounds far more complicated anyway..

Oh, FIFA 10, Lead Producer David Rutter, Gameplay Producer Aaron McHardy, Creative Director Gary Paterson.

I know you didn't go that far back but Simon Humber, The Producer of World Cup 2010 absolutely deserves recognition. I think WC 2010 lays the groundwork for FIFA 11's trajectory towards contextual realism & beyond. His vision was to create a football game where there was risk & reward, and timing and error are considered much like it was on PS2 PES & he sought to integrate this in FIFA whereas it didn't really feature as prominently until then once it debuted on next-gen (FIFA 07-09)

Sadly, The customer is always right. And that phrase means the customer dictates the market. If our coffee shop sells more cookies than coffee, well then we become a cookie shop & start selling less coffee.

I also agree with this. Even a game like FIFA 16 is extremely responsive while having near-perfect animations and of course, was highly realistic and successful. I think people will play anything that's contemporary whether it's a simulation or arcade.

Just look at eFootball and how successful that's been despite its shortcomings. And that's still arguably a more realistic game than FIFA 23 when it comes down to the fundamentals.

I've been playing FIFA since FIFA 10 for PC.
FIFA before FIFA 10 console version came along was crap:TTTH:, so I've been playing WE/PES.
WE3:98 WC, WE4, WE 2000, WE 2002, WE6FE, WE7, WE7 I, WE8, WE8LE, WE9, JLWE 9, WE10, PES6, WE-PES 2007, JLWE10, JLWE 2007, PES 2008 2009 for PC, and then I "defected" to FIFA :D.
Then I briefly played FIFA 11 and 2010 FIFA WC on PS3, but don't remember much.
I'll take pictures of the credits list for FIFA 11 and 2010 FIFA WC the next time I play the PS3.

btw. NG FIFA 07-09 had only 8 directions of movement, from 10 it's 16 directions (so called 360 Degrees) and gameplay fully evolved. So I think FIFA before FIFA 10 are trash.

So unfortunate the world lost him to cancer in 2015 at such a young age. He had such an impact on FIFA and IGNITE engine that the current developers still put flowers next to the goal at Portsmouth's home ground (Fratton Park) to honor his legacy within the game.

I’m a Vice President and Executive Producer working at 2K to help the label expand upon its portfolio of renowned Franchises.

I think he's important, he was the Lead Gameplay Producer for 14-17.
Now NBA 2K gets him.

Aaron is a legend, in my experience. Yes, NBA 2K is full of scandalous microtransactions but there is no sports game out there that can throw a stone at them with a clear conscience. Great move on 2K's part. Meanwhile, EASFC is on a scary path, judging by how close EASFC is to FIFA 23 on the pitch (it almost feels like everyone has forgotten that the gameplay is supposed to be the important bit).

“Expand upon its portfolio” 👀

Aaron McHardy moved to the American football franchises (Madden/College) at EA after 2021, which leads me to believe 2k brought him in to help with their American football resurgance as I believe they have an arcade American football game releasing in the next year or two.
