There's already been plenty of chatter that Call of Duty dev Infinity Ward is about to explore the sci-fi genre, but according to the latest issue of Xbox World 360 the studio's science-fiction fare is "definitely" happening.

"The net is awash with rumour mongering that Infinity Ward are beavering away on a brand new sci-fi shooter," says the mag. "However, we can confirm that it is definitely happening."

Apparently an Xbox World 360 staffer became aware of the news at a recent Call of Duty 4 event, but Activision's PR department blocked off any attempts to dig deeper. "Will it be Call of Duty 6? No idea..."

Speaking on its official website blog recently, the developer itself revealed its plans to possibly exploring new IP.

"We're excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing," the developer said in the post. "The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we'll have complete control over.

"We're excited to be working on our next project, but it's going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is."

We do enjoy a bit of sci-fi at CVG - especially when it involves guns - but where Infinity Ward is concerned we'd much prefer (as the above blog post suggests) that it explores the genre alongside the usual Call of Duty plans. We're not quite ready for Call of Duty: 2142... yet.
