Thanks Glavisted. Not much to pick a hole in your selection.

The XI you have picked have some much class on and style on the ball it would be an absolute pleasure to watch the technique and artistry of that side.

Zanetti would look like someone who has stepped out of the pages of El Grafico in the thirties as if carved out of granite with his slicked back hair and impeccable turnout much like Marzolin on the other flank.

I personally would prefer Redondo to start as DM ahead of Monti.

It's shame that the players of the maquina era and the fifties are barely known in Europe. Had there not been a Second World War I am sure Argentina would have won a couple of titles in 1942 and 1946 and players like Pedernera for instance would be revered.

And a shame that the AFA (shambolic as always) did not send their Copa side of 1957 to Sweden. This side beat Brazil 3-0 in that tournament and much of the same Brazilian side triumphed the following year.

Due to the bizarre rule of not allowing players who had decided to move to Europe play for the seleccion (given it was harder to travel back and forth) several world class players were removed who then opted to play for Italy or Spain.

These included Sivori and Angellilo. di Stefano would have been at the peak of his powers as well.

Again Argentina would have been strong favourites in '58 had the buffoons who are still in power at the AFA not been in charge.

Who would coach this lot ? So many great coaches to choose from. I'd say Cesar Menotti's philosophy or indeed Renato Cesarini.

I've added to the positional rankings to Pedro Ochoa, Ramón Díaz, Javier Saviola and Sergio Agüero into the forwards and Martín Palermo and Diego Milito into the centreforwards.
