The PC Building Thread

Anyone here in the know for what kind of specs to run for video editing? My mate has made a feature film shot in HD but his producer is being slack and he might want to buy a setup himself to do a re-edit. It's been done in Sony Vegas but my mate wants a Mac possibly. I told him to also consider a multi core PC. Obviously, rendering times etc would need some good processing power.

i think most Nvidia cards will be fine for video editing and the difference between a mac and pc is just the OS and software. both have the usual intel quad core cpu's etc.

I'm currently looking for an Intel motherboard but can't decide which to pick, I've looked at quite alot but a feature in one is not found in another and if one has it all it's abit pricey.

Looking for one in the $170-$230 range preferably with on-board power/reset buttons, debug led and USB 3.0 front header :P

Components I currently have:
Intel Core i7 2600k
16 GB Corsair Vengeance
Sapphire Radeon 6950
Corsair TX750M

Missing the motherboard and will get an SSD soon.

I did actually think it was worth it's own topic but then people would just moan.

The process he uses is logical but dosn't make sense in the real world, but a pretty good read none the less.
Buying 47 games at full price etc...
The comments at the bottom are also quite funny to read as people bitch about why don't you pay £35 to pre-order them on console saving money etc.... When the reality is who has ever paid over £25 for a new PC game except a muppet who dosn't know how to shop around.

i have an asus p6tse and i didnt realise it didnt pass 5.1 over spdif from games.

do you guys have standalone sound cards or use the onboard?

do you bother with dolby surround?

so i am in need of a sound card that will have dolby digital live encoding.

cheapest as possible, anyone recommend one?
 
Just bought a Radeon 6970 2gb for £158 off a Swedish auction site, bit more than I was looking to pay but should keep me going for some time, my 512mb 4870 was still going quite strong!

it has optic out. i dont use a standalone sound card as my mobo is top of the range and does 5.1

Your missing out.
Dosn't matter how good your mobo is they always use the same Realtek HD Audio unless you have a ROG mobo.

But either way if you play in 5.1 you will instantly hear a massive difference when you plug in an XFI.

I sold my original XFI cos it was the old PCI ones. But after having onboard audio for just 10 mins I instantly went and re-purchased a PCI-E XFI Fatality, it simple does not compare in the slightest.
 
Ahh is it? diddnt know that mate. im not really a audio freak as per say so long as the sound has good bass, im fine :)

i also use 5.1 headphones as well.

I dunno about creative soundcards though because before, there customer service and driver support are regarded as awful
 
Driver support is an absolute shambles.

Took them about 9 months to do a Vista driver but eventually they got released. Windows 7 drivers were out pretty much straight away.

But creative the whole time blamed Microsoft as when they switched to Vista you couldn't have hardware accelerated audio.
But some guy on the Creative forums hacked the drivers and got it working then Creative released their own driver a couple of months later and it worked.
 
i went for that asus xonar ds

will be here tomorrow

problem with onboard audio, not many support dolby digital live so wont encode game audio on the fly.

so even though the onboard audio supports 5.1 dolby digital, games will only come through as 2.0 audio (movies 5.1)

so for me having my turtlebeach x41 headset i could not get dolby digital to play.

so i have opted for the above card which will support games with 5.1 dolby.

movies are encoded to dolby already so they play fine on onboard audio

i wasn#t aware of this until i realised my headset was not outputting 5.1 audio
