The Retro-PES Corner

Hi Guys,

I stumbled accross this thread...and well, I hate to say it, but I still play the original PES (PS2 era).

Not sure if it poses any interest to anyone, but I'm creating a new Mod (using Pes 2014 PSP engine)....Introducing Pro Retrolution Soccer 1989 (I'll see if this post gets past moderation and if it generates interest, then hopefully a thread can be created):

The reason why I decided working on this Mod is to make a classic PES game feel brand new again, and by using classic teams from the 80's the feeling will be everlasting as we know all the players in this era have retired. So if anyone plays it, they won't feel that the 'rosters and kits' are outdated compared to modern pes mentaility where everything HAS to be up to date.

What's funny, just replying to the very first post in this thread. - I can safely say, the classic players WILL HAVE HAIR lol. So, since I've been working on this like a lone ranger, just wanted to see what others think?

I can share that this mod will include:

* Teams from the 80s (with old kit design)
* Updating the database to include players from the 80s (this is the hardest and longest task....I haven't even started on this yet, but will eventually reach there)
* Include old champions league campain videos and also include a Champions League final opening ceremony (the above video gives an example of the champions league included).
* Music in the game will be from the 80s also.
* Plastic teams will be replaced by classic teams. E.g. Wimbledon FC, Nottingham Forrest.

Current progress so far.

Premier League has been 'retro'd. - Still have to go through the remaining leagues. (yeah it's a long process. But working bit by bit).

Let's see...anyone with me for this mod I'm working on?

Welcome aboard @jajabinx35 :) You'll find we all play the old PES's in here. I don't have a PSP myself but it looks a great project that you're doing there and I'm sure there'll be many here interested who do have a PSP. Myself, @miguelfcp and @sniglet are doing a similar thing for PES6, we are just doing single League though (see thread in my signature for the general idea - another thread named the same but with Retro is where our retro project is) Our first one is going to be the old English First Division for 1979/80.

Look forward to seeing your progress and following the thread when you start it :)

That kind of period is one I'm most interested in (mid 80s to late 90s). This is mainly down to the iconic players, kits, birth of the Premier League and probably because I was born in 88 so there is a nostalgic factor too.
One of my many dream projects for PES was an OF based around teams of that period, mainly English ones so this will be good to see.

@mattmid - Wow I'll look forward to this also. I just can't believe I'm not the only one who feels the same way about PES....seriously, the classic PS2 versions are just too good to let go.

I'll really look forward to see the retro projects, just really glad to see that there are projects in place :)

@Titch - Yep, in the mod, I've completed the kits for the following teams (kits are all from 1988-1989):

Arsenal
Liverpool
Nottingham Forest
Norwich City
Derby County
Coventry City
Everton
QPR
Millwall
Man UTD
Wimbledon
Southampton
Chartlon Athletic
Sheffield Wednesday
Luton Town
Aston Villa
Middlesborough
West Ham United
Newcastle United.

(I chose this league as being an Arsenal fan, this was the most climatic season imo lol).

I'll present a thread shortly with screenshots of all the kits so far.

Look forward to it.
Took me ages to realise Tottenham weren't in the list
I added them in also lol. - Even as an Arsenal fan, the action can only exist if Tottenham is in it.

(I've also added chelsea and man city in the 'other league' area. They can be added into the Premier League via Master league.)

@jajabinx35: welcome to the Corner!
I'm very interested on that mod of yours, not so much for the season you chose to reproduce as I wasn't even alive back then :D, but mainly because I'm one of the last people on Earth still playing PSP PES! (haven't given up on getting the rest of the planet to join me, though). It's looking good and the features seem promising, so I'll gladly try it out once you release it. Also, if you want to keep updating us here on the Corner on your work, you're welcome to :)

So, PES 3 eh? After reading some of this thread (and the bumped @fmicablues7 thread) I thought I'd give it a go. Turns out, it's a lot of fun and can work well and look good after a few tweaks.

Managed to get the internal resolution up to 2560x1440 by using a nice bit of software for retro gaming called dgVoodoo. Read this to find out how and if you have any problems or questions, let me know. This should also work for any other retro PES titles that don't have the internal resolution option from kitserver.

This also fixes the worst of the stuttering which can happen under Windows 10.

1. In PES 3 set screen mode to 'Window' via the in-game Screen settings menu. Not sure if this is necessary and makes step 5 pointless - 'Full screen' is untested.

2. Download this: https://mega.nz/#!NlRWhaBD!uPQVrAoehKY9kCOHDkN5pBbLRPM3SUO5-dejE4Bc0Ck

3. Drop all files from the .zip into the root of your PES install (same directory as pes3.exe).

4. Edit kserv.cfg so it includes: aspect.ratio = 1.78, screen.width = 1920, screen.height = 1080; or whatever your screen resolution/aspect ratio is.

5. Add pes3.exe to Borderless Gaming (https://github.com/Codeusa/Borderless-Gaming/releases).

This is what it should look like - watch on Youtube for full 1080p60 goodness:

@mattmid @miguelfcp Currently playing through an all Scotland League with Fife. Amador is still great. :) I'll do some more work on it at some point I'm sure.

I can't find "kserv.cfg". Is it because I have Winning Eleven 7 and not PES 3?

Finally finished episode 1 of my new series!

It's 2005 and it's the highest prize in European Club Football, The UEFA Champions League. 32 of Europe best clubs competing for a spot in the Final, at The Stade De France in Paris.

It's bloody difficult to score on this game, but when you do it's so satisfying. You really do punch the air when you score. I haven't played this much PES 5 since i was a kid and you really do notice the difference when you're so used to PES 6. I used to think they were very similar but now i've had time with 5, you notice the quality of life improvements a little more on PES 6 but also the philosophies of both games are so apparent. PES 6 is the more accessible game and PES 5 rewards patient buildup, timing and not being a button masher with tackling. I love them both like they're both of kids, for different personalities.

Also been playing a bit of PES 2014 this week, And i'm blown away by how realistic this game tried to be, the ambition and vision for PES 2014 and what the series could've been on Fox is a painful time capsule of could haves and should haves. The AI is pretty impressive on this game, check out this bit of skill and technique from COM controlled Drogba!

And something about the weight of the players really adds a full feeling to the physicality of this game. It's only the first time PES introduced actually body physics to the series and it wasn't bad at all for Konami's first attempt at their own "impact" engine.

Not to mention the animations, foot planting and inverse kinetics. If only more emphasis was placed in current PES on body momentum like they did here.

Thought I'd share some of the gameplay footage (had a bad 'pes day', but this is one of the reason why I still enjoy the classic). Please excuse the rosters, glitches, weird hairstyles and banners (which will be updated to show ads from the 80s).

I think the biggest hurdle will be the valuations of classic players (when I get to that point). I'm currently working on updating the french liga teams to have classic kits.

Weather seems really nice here, I'll be back soon and will create that thread when I'm back after the easter break!

That was fantastic, you got a sub from me. And not to mention, will be checking out your other vids also!

Sadly input lag ruined 2014, totally unplayable.

Indeed! Well said @MafiaMurderBag . If you are a sim guy, PES 5 is a superior game to PES 6.

PES 2014 is perhaps the best game Konami has released in the 2013–2018 period, the AI is impressive indeed, the variety of AI play is impressive, the physics and player/ball weight are impressive (I play it at –2 speed), with a few tweaks here and there like yair gameplay patch version 3.0 (fix for input lag, responsiveness and gameplay enhancemnets) and a few graphic improvements for the PC version, and it is perhaps the greatest Football game ever.

Right now my go to games are PES 3, PES 4, PES 5, and PES 2014.

@MafiaMurderBag , only solution to input lag is a:

Playstation 2.......the platform of the PES Gods.

:PRAY::PRAY::PRAY:

And Sony Japan only ended PlayStation 2 service/repair support last year.

So the Dinner says time to bring it back into production as a PES specialist console.

Anyone remember the PES3 online lobbys which came out for PC not long after launch?

I remember their being two, but cannot recall their names :(

All I know is I spent a LOT of time playing online and it worked :D

PESrankings was the website included with PES 3 PlayStation 2 version. It was in the paper manual included with the DVD. Both PC and PS 2 versions were the first to have online multiplayer I think.

The PC version used Direct IP to connect so there was no central "lobby" system so some clever chaps made a lobby client.

A pes3wendetta patch version is included for sure (I am using it). Don’t remember to see a clear PES3 to be honest.

Installed*. Had a look elsewhere online for the 'clean' version and can't find it. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

*Tried playing with my PS4 controller using DS4Windows. Works for PES 5 and 6 but not 3. Anyone had this issue? On both Windows 7 and 10.

You could try with WE7I also, there is a clean installer available and a 2003-04 patch too (Wolf Patch for sure and Wendetta I am not sure).

Tried WE7I Wolf Patch. Plus another PES 3 install (RPL) that I found in Sany's thread. Nothing from the gamepad in both cases. Frustrating. Maybe something to do with the PS4 controller interface...

Would love to find a clean install though. Doubtful, I've just trawled eBay. Just not comfortable with patches. I'm a purist and control freak - I want the games in the original form and if anyone's going to tinker with it, it'll be me!

Just wish I could retrieve my Euro 2004 option file from way back.

In pes 3 you can set the controls buttons in the settings game menu buttons configuration and it is more reliable in there than from the settings. I am sure it has to do with Ddinput and Xinput settings.

The controller just isn't registering at all.

I've gone to the settings.exe, where the controller is recognised, and mapped all the buttons. But when I launch the game, nothing.
