I watched each and every match of Rivaldo at Barcelona. He was a great great player capable of doing things very few players would achieve. And he didn't play all the time for an underachieving Barcelona. He was part of a fantastic team coached by Van Gaal that won 2 consecutive leagues and went to European Cup semifinals and cup finals. Watch this: Frank de Boer, Xavi, Figo, Kluivert, Rivaldo, Luis Enrique, Cocu... It was a hell of a team!

Later on he was left alone, it's true, and for some years he was the only reference of the team.

BUT, though he is one of the best players I've ever seen, it wouldn't make it into my "best ever" players, not even best brazilian players as others say.

First of all, Rivaldo was very good, but he needed the team to play for him. Any player with that trait is out of my "best ever" list of any kind. Rivaldo was a great scorer, but he always thought first about himself. He did a lot of goals every season but very few assists. But it's not only about assists, it's about vision, it's hard to explain. He was extremely talented at close spaces, dribbling, shooting... but he didn't have that "special" touch or vision that legends have.

As I say, I loved him when he played for us, but I hardly felt the same mesmerizing feeling that I had when I watched players like Romario, Cruyff or Laudrup.

Look at Ronaldinho, he performed at his top level for only 2-3 years, while Rivaldo was a key player for a lot of years. But the magic Ronaldinho had... that is unforgettable. Though Rivaldo probably scored one of the most spectacular goals ever. I watched it live!

BUT... he wasn't a genius. He did a lot of things right, but he didn't have that special something that makes a player unique, and as Ben and Gerd say, that uniqueness is what makes a legend.

On the other side, Ronaldinho was a bloody genius, as Romario was. I prefer Romario over Ronaldo for similar reasons: genius. Ronaldo was incredible, one of the best strikers ever and a genius himself. But Romario had that magical extra something, he won with his mind other than his legs. That's probably what makes Xavi a better player than the likes of Gerrard to me, for example. Xavi plays with his brain, and I have a special predilection for this kind of players.

My favorite 11 of players I've watched would be something like:

GK: Van der Saar, Buffon, Arconada, Casillas, Schmeichel, Preud'homme, Zoff, Shilton, Fillol, Dasayev, Kahn, Schumacher.

RB: Alves, Maicon, Cafu, Thuram, Zanetti

CB: Puyol, Maldini, Nesta, Baresi, Koeman, Blanc, Scirea, Sammer

LB: Roberto Carlos, Krol, Tarantini

DMF: Beckenbauer, Redondo, Vieira, Makelele, Rijkaard, Neeskens, Hierro, Desailly

CMF/LMF/RMF: Xavi, Iniesta, Matthaus, Platini, Pirlo

AMF: Messi, Maradona, Zidane, Zico, Hagi, Laudrup,

FORWARDS: Romario, Ronaldo, Van Basten, Cruyff, Hugo Sanchez, Eto'o, Henry

As I say, it's the list of the guys I've watch play football (mostly live, others through a lot of telly), so it's a list of the players of my life. Older players would make this list even bigger.

FC Barcelona 2008–09 starting lineup.

others are just unrealistic, becouse they never played and never would play together in one team..

only imagining playing them together can´t make them best 11, becouse you can´t prove it without seeing them play at their best form.. you only wish to but to make one eleven is useless again, who would they play against? just phylosophicall thinking :)

sorry.

ha best players dont make best team. I play a 5-a-side team and we have 4-5 guys who are best in the league but all are like messi and ronaldo, just greedy and never pass the ball, try tricks, and run and score.

When all them play same week we end up losing...when only 1 or 2 off them turn up we always win easy.

Its like I guess why every teams need like a Makele etc...

yeah that´s why many of this best player awards are realy funny sometimes.. there is just to many aspects that make player unique and to think player would ever mean something alone makes it even more funny..

if you give awards to single player, maybe he deserves no award if he is good, the team awards speak for itself... but even that is relative, since there was many many great players in smaller teams that knew they won´t win nothing major, but became legends for their clubs..

it´s all very relative..and simply impossible to make starting lineup.. especially you can´t make lineup of players you didn´t saw play yourself..becouse your perspective would be totally different...

you also can´t base your choice on stats only...except maybe GK position, since many players in football played different positions and there is so many chainges in lineups, you can´t pick best AM for example..

there are many players that won everything in national team like Maradona but haven´t won much with their teams or in other hand, there is players like Messi who won everything with barca, yet he didn´t won world cup so far...

the lenght of competition, the era of football and difficulty of competition also play a role..

it´s all very subjective... and i guess it´s all right as it is.. i can only pick players i seen play in my life and that i admired and followed.. i can´t pick players i only seen clips from youtube and listening to dad how great they were when i was not yet born..

people talk about platini and cruyff etc...ya know what they mean nothing to me. I only seen some clips of old world cup highlights on tv..geez even kenny dalgish and bobby moore etc..etc..they mean nothing to me.

If I have granchildredn I can tell them all about C ronaldo and L Messi and Zidane and to them there will be new stars and they wont care for these guys or appreciate them. Ronaldo some 60 year old dude who appears on tv ads for viagra, messi some tv co-commentator and Zidane some ambassaodr for fifa who makes draws out of hats at world cups.

Though technology and media is so much better games and quality of footage will never be lost or poor.

yeah that's it. most of our grandparents didn't have the chance to archive matches of the legendary players of their times so we don't have the chance to watch them on regular basis and so we couldn't judge them accurately but make sure that in future our grandchildren will have that chance and they will be able to compare their stars with our stars.

but still it dont matter to much.

I think of a Player like david Bekcham I remember I was young and he was such a big legend, famous guy, scoring wonder free kicks, magic crosses every week.

Now I can youtube or see on tv some of this 'old footage' and its like oh well...who cares.

Players only generate excitement in the time of their exsitence IMO.

I know the hype about beckham, the goals by Alan shearer, even the qaulity of 'fat' ronaldo. Cause 10 years or so ago these guys were amazing!!!

BUt to kids these days even with the 'archive' footage of these players they wont be appreciated....they are more into there Messis, C.Ronaldos, Agueros, Drogbas etc...

And in 5 years we all forget C.Ronaldo and Drogba and talk about Lukakuka and Neyamr or whoever it be etc..

To be fair watching 'O Fenomeno's videos still excites me. His magical moments always put a smile on my face. Or Beckham's long passes, man, they were crazy. Now the only player I can recall, Xabi Alonso can send long balls like that in this era. But still Beckham had his special style. Or I can't name a player atm who has the elegance Laudrup or Zidane had. Or how many has or can have in future that scary and giant Spartan-like stature that Oliver Kahn had? I think you're going harsh about the issue. Some guys will always create excitement in most people's eyes. That's what 'unique' means to people. One can't get bored with 'unique'. I personally don't think that someday Ill forget about Zidane and get bored with watching his 'old footage's. Yeah, I see what your point is, someday guys like Zidane v2.0 or Zidane v3.0 will come along and God knows, I'll react to his highlights like 'oh well' as you said. But things that can maintain being unique over the years will excite humanity forever methinks.

yeh but you like me saw these guys in their prime.

ASk 10-14 year old kids about laudrup theyll be like who?

cause they are just kids. in my childhood I was aware of none of the past legends bar pele and maradona. :) this issue basically depends on the person himself mostly.

Yeah, perhaps a more useful q would be best team of the 2000's, 1990's and so forth?

That pretty much exhausts my time watching football enough to have an opinion, but for me:

90's

--------------Schmeicel---------------
---Cafu----Maldini--Nesta----Thuram---
---------Robson-----Vieira------------
----------------Zidane----------------
----Henry--------------------Giggs----
----------------Ronaldo---------------

00's

---------------Buffon-----------------
--Maicon---Ferdinand-Vidic----Cole----
--------------Makelele----------------
---------Xavi----------Iniesta--------
-----Ronaldinho------------Messi------
--------------C.Ronaldo---------------

I know Ronnie isn't a CF, but I can't exclude any of those top 3 ;)

Finally someone mentioning Ryan Giggs.
He deserves to be mentioned among the all-time greats.

He will have played (at least) 22 years in one of the best teams ever and showed last week how good he still can be...same goes for Paul Scholes.

IMO both are much better players than David Beckham.

Lot of possible combinations but this is quickly off the top of my head so some may be slightly out of position. And yes, I know most of you will disagree with Robben :P

Interesting to not see many Oliver Khans mentioned. He's my goal keeper of choice.

Here's my team from what I've seen.
