New Impressions on PES 2008

Well, I got the game yesterday, mixed feelings about it, will try to put it out as simple as possible.

I think the gameplay is still there, obviously. There are some few minor tweaks, but the ones I noticed, are for the best. Like scoring from free-kicks are easier now. Thanx Konami, I guess you FINALLY realized that the hard part on taking a free-kick in REAL LIFE is getting the ball to go in the right direction (the goal). If you do that , it´s almost a certain goal, even if it goes it the corner that the keeper is covering. That´s like real life. Not like in PES6, that keepers (who would travel faster than any force applied to the ball) went to get the ball even if it were going outside the posts. Like, I played hundreds of hours of PES 6, and was only able to score a couple of free kicks (thousands of crossbar hits, on the other hand). On PES 2008, I scored countless times on 10 minutes of Training, and scored on my very 1st freekick on a match (Sneijder). Again, thanx Konami.

Well, graphically, the game took a new direction, for the better and the worse. The net has a different format (the goal net, not net play :freak:), which looks cool. I just think that they could have put on a way for the player to choose from different net formats, just like there´s an option for choosing pitch formats (turf grain). The player models sure are different... I don´t know. I only tried FIFA ´07 on the PlayStation2 (putted it down after 5 minutes, never picked up again), and I can say that Konami is heading in that direction (FIFA series), graphically speaking. Some people like, some people don´t. I personally don´t. Just hope patching makes it look better sooner.

I don´t know about about official liscences on PES 6 (only played patched versions), but PES 2008 have the liscenses for all leagues, minus the Premiership (with the exception of Newcastle and Tottenham, from what I´ve seen). I just hoped they would´ve got more teams and legues this year. Well, will keep hoping.

This game make me want try out FIFA, because of the liscences. I got full of hopes when I saw PES 2008 was 6 or 7 GB´s in size this time, I thought there were more teams and stadiuns, but in this way, it´s disapointing. Same teams, even less stadiums. I don´t think FIFA got closer in terms of playability, but if it got, I would play it over PES 2008. If it doesn´t, I guess I will keep playing PES 6 (thanx to kitserver and the people who invented this wonderful tool) for the time beign...

Let me hear your thoughts on this.

The new nets are the better part of the game...the rest is just an unfinished game imvho... :(

Not sure scoring a lot on freekicks is any good really...how many freekick goals do you see in 10 real football games? 1? 2? Sometimes 0?

Well, it truly depends on the distance and on the player taking the freekick. Put a skilled player, from 19 to 23 meters out, just outside the box, and you´ll see his success rate is above 70%.

Seriously, no...success rate for the best freekicks specialists in real life is probably around 20/30%...and way lower for average specialists...

Example: Pirlo is a great freekick taker, and he has 0 goals after 9 matches in the league...and trust me, ac milan gets plenty of freekicks in scoring position...hope he wont score tonight as they play my team... :lmao:

Not true. Look at Ronaldinho vs Rangers. 2 free kicks, only 1 on target, 0 goals.

In PES 2008 he would score them both if the COM was controlling him. Unrealistic.

Seriously dude that was uncalled for.. he's only expressing his opinion. It's true PES 2008 is dire but there are some good additions this year... even if it is just the faces of players.

I hated it when I first got it, but I only played in exhibition mode. Last night I started a ML just to see if it was any different. Its was awesome. It really felt like a real match, with the cpu team passing the ball around, looking for gaps, while I shadowed players and held them up with my defenders. The game just felt much better than it did in exhibition mode.
Im playing on LOW settings right now -
AMD Athlon 64 3500+
991mhz
1.ooGB of RAM
Geforce FX5500 graphics card

Im planning on getting a new GC pretty soon, can someone recommend a good one so that I can play on HIGH or at least MEDIUM setings?

The master League is definately alot better imo

and thank god they give u some half decent players now like Van den berg and Guitterz lol

just wish the stamina wasnt so bad at first

I have only done a few world cups and have never tried master league and prob never will, the game is just completly piss poor.

All I can say with Fifa now being the better game of the two I really hope Konami get their act together and start relasing the best football game like were used to rather than a dodgy unplayable game with good graphics.
Who honestly cares what the graphics are like when you playing such a shoddy game.

Nearly didn't buy the game because I was disappointed with some aspects of the demo - been playing the game for a few days now and I love it, feels like real football - think I was a bit harsh to judge the demo, the full game feels so different - I love PES 2008 - thanks Konami!

If they fix the shearing and we get option files with all the kits and rosters fixed then it could be close. Haven't tried online yet but from reading stuff it seems like it wouldn't be a good idea!

Master league plays much better because in the beginning you have very crappy players, you have to use your brain, and good build-up play to create any chances(like in a real match), once you are starting to sign some speedy players, the game will suddenly become very easy, you'll start to score some routine and similar goals.

At least play Master League before you say anything

I would but I have wasted enough time to know how shit this game is, I am not going to waste more time playing Master League.
The game might be better on master league, hell anything would make this game better.
e.g. Sack Seabass.

Master League has always been what Pro evo is for me so every year it makes the game fun, as for speedy players yeah i can see what you mean but then again, i played a match beat arsenal 5-1 then played chelsea got thumped 3-0 on Top player - Very hard

and i have a hard match against blackburn they never let me win fucking stubborn team

Darn, when I started the topic, I had only played a couple of matches, and was still getting the feel of the game. Now that I played a lot more, I´d like to say it that it sucks... big time. Konami screwed this for good. Really a shame, this game has FIFA plastered all over it: running, running with the ball, dribling everyone, Cristiano Ronaldo gotta be the best player ever, it seems...

PES 6 was really close to perfection, all they had to do was do some minor tweaks, but no... they had to mess with the gameplay. Now there´s the result... Konami sold out the most strong basis of the game: the gameplay.

A shame really. And sorry to you guys about posting those first impressions so quickly, guess I should have played more before doing it.

At least I got to mess with AFS Explorer again (for installing the EPL patches and other stuff, thanx again for the tip, hellenes!), as I stopped fooling with it, since I began playing it on the PC (thanx to kitserver)

Oh well...

Then I suggest everyone who is unhappy with the game just dont play it anymore. Better yet, why dont you make your own PERFECT football game because you all know soooo much more than Konami. Then, after years of hard work, you can sit back and have some snot nosed, know it all kid tell you how crap it is.
