Well I know it's been extremely depressing to read my posts over the past few months/years but I genuinely thought I'd thrown my life away and was gonna be stuck in bottom of the barrel jobs for the rest of my life.

I applied for Uni again a few months back just as something to do more than anything and wasn't expecting much from it (didn't have the required points for a course).

Turns out I was wrong. Today Sheffield Hallam gave me an unconditional offer on this course:

    http://www.shu.ac.uk/prospectus/course/720/

Something positive finally happened in my life :CONFUSE::BOP:

I could end up coding for PES or FIFA at some point in the future, y'never know.

I'll probably be less depressed from now on so you needn't worry about me (at least until I get stuck on something at Uni and decide it's the end of the world). :P

it didn't "just happen" mate. YOU made it happen. u're the one who decided to apply, and even though u seem surprised by your success, there's a part of u who knew u had what it takes.... otherwise u wouldn't have even tried.

i obviously can't say i know u, matherto, but from your posts, it appears u massively underestimate yourself. so, if i may give u a suggestion, keep following your gut (like u did when u decided to apply for uni), keep feeding that part of u who believes in yourself, and i'm absolutely sure u'll find out u're MUCH more capable than u actually think u are.

    congratulations buddy! :TU:
.... and don't u ever dare drop out of uni..... we're watching u! :PIRATE:

    You took your time Jamezinho.

He has already graduated, happily married has 2 kids and runs his own business based around software he coded to help people identify, cope with and treat depression.

He is nominated for a Nobel prize and he helps out in a soup kitchen every Friday morning.

He is the man we all wished we could be....

    Good stuff, best of luck!

I'm also at Sheffield Hallam Uni, I'll be on the second year of my course (Computer Security with Forensics) when you start yours.

The city is pretty nice - it's got all of the things your typical English city would have as well as some great pubs and parks. Because there's two universities in the city, there's tons of nightclubs, particularly on West St. but that's not really my thing. There are loads of things to do and the uni societies are bound to include something you enjoy.

The biggest thing about keeping yourself happy at uni though is to make some friends - it can be easy to keep to yourself which can make you feel isolated and homesick. If you haven't already chosen your accommodation, I suggest one of the halls with a large number of people around as there's bound to be a few of them that you have something in common with.

Regarding the actual uni work - don't be afraid to ask your lecturers questions or meet them outside of your sessions. From my experience they're glad to help and even questions that you think are stupid are likely to be surprisingly common. These people are paid quite well (by yourself) for their ability to make others understand their subject area, make more use of that than simply their lecture slides!

Making friends at uni is pretty easy. Remember most people are in the same boat i.e. away from home and not knowing anyone.

Rob what do you plan doing after school? Your degree will be perfect in my world. You could make great money as well with great job satisfaction and would get to travel the world.

Still no idea yet to be honest - I've never been one to plan ahead much but I'll definitely want to travel a lot. The world is a massive place, I would certainly regret it if I didn't experience the different cultures and see the sights etc.

I'm going travelling around Europe actually next week, should be fun! Amsterdam, Paris, San Sebastian and Toulouse sorted already - may be able to fit in a couple more destinations as I have about 3 weeks from then before I have to move house :).

Regarding a job though... I find computing fairly interesting and my degree should help me get a job involving that but I have much more of a "work to live" attitude than "live to work". As long as I can live in decent conditions, travel a bit, meet/socialise with nice people and keep in contact with my family then I'm happy - I have no intention of going for a monetary high score or screwing people over to one-up them on the career ladder.

So my next door neighbour added me on Facebook and we've not stopped talking since.

    She's lovely.

Why does she have to have a boyfriend?
