Finally confirmed:

Speaking to GTTV during this month's Game Developers Conference, Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA, was asked if the heavily rumored third title in the series would be announced at this year's E3. Tretton wouldn't specify when fans will hear about it, but did confirm the game was in development.

"Well, we own Guerrilla Games and they did a great job on Killzone 1 and 2," he said. "I don't know if you'll see announcements about it, but I can promise you a Killzone 3."

Tretton also said the PlayStation Move announcements at GDC was only just the beginning, and Sony fans should expect even better news at E3. "This is just the frosting on the cake, I'm saving the batter for E3," he said. "We will absolutely bring the heat, there's a lot to talk about."

In the same interview, Tretton re-confirmed RockStar Games' Agent, announced at last year's E3, is still a PlayStation 3 exclusive title.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Cant wait for it! I hope it comes out this year. I thought Killzone 2 was one of the best FPS of this generation and the multiplayer was superb, better than Call of Duty in my opinion. I heard a rumour that the game will be supporting 3D and PlayStation Move. :)

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Agreed. Killzone 2 is arguably one of the most frustrating games I've played on the PS3, and that was just a borrowed copy. It's a top quality game, definitely, but the difficult level can be insane at times.

IGN E3 2010: Killzone 3 Hands-on

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/109/1092173p1.html

"There are no pre-renders, no elaborate unplayable cut-scenes and no false promises, and frankly Killzone 3 plays so well right now it doesn't need them.

"Things soon require a little more dexterity and the mini-gun is ditched, revealing some subtly refined gunplay. Guerrilla is coy on the specifics – no doubt down to the fact that the specifics are constantly being fine-tuned and are likely to be in flux until just before the game ships – but it's certainly more responsive than before. It's put to the test by level design that seems to favour more direct shoot-outs than the cowering gunfights of Killzone 2, but when cover is required it now seems more reliable and intuitive, and snapping behind objects is a much swifter experience.

One thing that's definitely improved is the melee system, as the clumsy system of old is superseded by a much more dynamic way to stab someone in the face. It's now context sensitive: creep up on a Helghan and it's possible to kick them up against a wall before plunging the knife with a further press of the melee button. Going toe-to-toe with them enables some gruesome kills, sticking the knife in places it doesn't belong like a Helghan's ribcage or eye socket. "

Guerrilla cuts Killzone pad lag

Guerrilla Games is promising tighter, more responsive controls for the forthcoming Killzone 3.

Writing on the official Killzone site, Guerrilla Game Director Mathijs de Jonge described the difficult decisions the team took in addressing this highly contentious issue. On the one hand, the response from the controls was the subject of much criticism from many gamers. On the other, the sensation of weight and inertia was one of the defining features of the game's primary handshake with the player.

"Our first priority when we started working on the controls for Killzone 3 was to listen closely to Killzone 2's players - what they liked, what they disliked, and how they felt things could be improved," Mathijs wrote. "Accuracy and responsiveness consistently came up as the top issues. At the same time, a lot of players were saying they loved the weighty feel."

Back in February, Digital Foundry took possession of a DualShock 3 controller adapted by legendary modsmith Benjamin Heckendorn. Connected to an LED monitor board, it allowed us to measure the latency between button press and on-screen action, the so-called input or controller lag.

Our result? The simple act of firing a pistol (something you wouldn't expect to have much heft or inertia) took 150ms from button press to muzzle-flash on-screen. In more challenging scenes, with the game dropping frames, latency was even higher. In comparison, most other first-person shooters running at 30FPS tend to weigh in around 100ms to 133ms max, while 60FPS titles like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare can achieve a very respectable 66ms response in optimum conditions.

The official Killzone site talks about the team "going back to the drawing board" in improving controller response.

"Right now it's still a work in progress," Mathijs explained. "But we're definitely getting there. We've recalibrated the dead zone to be more responsive and significantly reduced the input lag, resulting in far better accuracy. Best of all, we've managed to retain that sense of weight that set Killzone 2 apart from other shooters. I can't wait for people to try it out."

We played the E3 demo of Killzone 3 at the event and while clearly a proper analysis wasn't possible within the confines of SCEE's press lounge, there was definitely a sense of an additional crispness to the controls. However, in the pre-alpha demo there was still a somewhat variable frame-rate - definitely one of the significant contributory factors in adding to Killzone 2's controller lag.

Overall impressions were very positive though, and bearing in mind how little has been shown of the full game thus far, we can't wait to see more.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

In all honesty the lag in Killzone 2 didnt really effect the game in my opinion. I still enjoyed the game and thought it was a fantastic experience.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

To me what make the game boring was the "long corridor" game design with scripted events. What's the point on having a good AI if you put it in a narrow corridor?

At least, make those corridors varied and exciting. To me all the game was the same long level, there was no variation of pace or scenery, and at the end it was a simple case of throwing more enemies in rooms.

Granted, Uncharted 2 was also a long corridor, but it was great fun to play and had many different mechanics working at the same time.

Killzone seemed to me a very good technical product without any kind of soul in it. But: they had one of the best trailers around. That one with the nuke. I can't find it now.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

I can understand your point but sometimes linearity is a necessity and can actually make a game better.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

There will be a Killzone 3 beta, but only for people who subscribe to PlayStation Plus.

To enter, download the PS+ exclusive Killzone 3 theme on 14th October. If you're one of the first 10,000 to do so, you're in.

Those who qualify can play from 25th October, according to the European PlayStation Blog.

Inside the Killzone 3 beta you'll find the Operations game type, new party system and jetpack and exoskeleton vehicles. Plus, your feedback may alter the final game, so make sure you suggest something memorable.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Great news about the beta. Looking forward to it.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Moving on, many of you have been asking what time you will be able to download the Killzone 3 theme that grants access to the Killzone 3 beta to the first 10,000 SCEE Plus subscribers who download it. We have been discussing which time is best for everyone and we can now confirm that it will go live in the EU PlayStation Store at 8pm in the UK, 9pm CET and 6am in Sydney, Australia on 13 October.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Seems strange they're trying to put this up at a fair time for everyone. Usually they couldn't give 2 fucks and just whack it up with the usual store update so all the kids home from school get it first.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

The Killzone 3 beta keys, in the form of PS3 themes, went live last night on the PSN Store at 8pm, UK time. If you’re wondering whether or not you’ll be one of the lucky ones to get into the beta, rest easy: if you grabbed it within the first half hour you’re good to go.

A Tweet from SCEE confirms the news:

FYI, 10,000 SCEE Plus members downloaded the Killzone 3 beta theme in half an hour. If that includes you, you’ll be receiving an email soon.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

SCEE have just tweeted that the beta invites will be sent out this afternoon. Due to the quantity of invites being sent out it may take some time to receive them in your email inbox.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

WOW! The graphics are simply stunning. The textures and lighting are absolutely phenomenal. Really enjoying it so far. It feels so much more tighter and precise now but still with that weighted realistic feel to it. Cant wait to play some more of it.

Re: Killzone 3 (PS3)

Hopefully they'll have made this one slightly less frustratingly difficult in places.

Killzone 2 was superb but for moments of sheer madness and controller throwing tantrums.
