Diego Tristan - what happened to him?

    Hi ppl,

This one goes to all the spanish soccer followers but specially to our specialist PLF (who had an avatar of Diego if I remember, for a while), but there's one in the end for french soccer followers too.

Diego Tristan - Following the interest from my club in this player (seems Celtic is also on him and with better chances) I remembered seeing good things from Diego 2,3 years ago, specially a couple of marvellous seasons from Depor, both domestically and in the CL, when I thought Diego had everything to get a move to one of the big european clubs.

I've confirmed my idea of this player seeing this magnificent video of his quality moments in those 2 seasons.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icTKXjj6MBg&search=diego%20tristan

Then.. he disappeared. Now there's always the "age" issue but Diego is not old yet so other issues had to come in. After a quick check on fan foruns I've found talk about: injuries, casinos (gambling), drinking and women.

Can spanish La Liga followers enlight me about Diego and if there is any chance the player in the video still exists?

Second case: specially for french lads - Pontus Farnerud, spend some time in Monaco and in other french club. What's about him? Is he any good or just an handsome boy for marketing purposes? :)

    cheers,

He is 30 years old already, so I doubt there'll be anything too great coming from him in the future. He played almost every match last season, scored 12 goals, so he still is a rather important player for La Coruna.

Fun thing is, he still has a contract with Depor until 2008 while he could move for a set fee of 77.000.000 Euros. :D

Well, don't think 30 years is that old for a central striker, unless in the cases of strikers that depend too much on speed, which I don't think was Tristan's case.

Anyway I saw for example Acosta arrive here from Argentina with 31 and bang them hard after a poor first year, while the Romario example lives to tell the tale. It all depends on the player, in the case of Tristan my curiosity goes to the fact that this player really had what it took to make the big move but somewhat "disapeared".

77M? are you messing with numbers? :) Depor is asking 3,5M mate.

lol yeah but acosta is the luckiest striker i've seen. if you have so much luck you can play pretty much like him, until you are 36 years rofl... he didn't have any physical (1,77m) nor technical quality so i guess age wasn't much of a factor. in our local league, he would hit the grass or volley balls bouncing into the ground and the ball would still go in, disconcerting the keeper for such awful shots.

that case doesn't seem to apply to either romario (finishing technique legend) or tristan.

yep, I agree Acosta was "strange". In a very different way as strange as Jardel (although this one most impressive I've ever seen period): players than simply don't fit their productivety.

Acosta was not fast, was not tall or even athletic. He didn't have a very powerful shot (although he was acurate). But he seemed to always BE THERE (very similar to Jardel although as I said this one even more impressive).

Acosta banged a lot in Sporting CP in the second season, and his most impressive quality was the ability to play with his back turned to the oposing goal. He got so many fouls from defensive presure there, they simply couldn't take the ball from him!

He is also popular here in Portugal for breaking the face of Paulinho Santos in a Cup Final without even being caught. Paulinho was one of the most vicious and treacherous players of the 90s (from FC Porto), had inumerous incidents with loads of players, so it was national fun when Acosta broke his face with his elbow on an aerial ball (intentionaly) after Paulinho wen't western on Acosta early on.

Acosta was also liked by everybody, despite that incident with Paulinho he was always a clean and fair player.

Here you go, you can check his moments in Sporting CP in this memory lane video (as you can see by some of the goals he wasn't that "horrible" in tech, check the goals around min 1.07,1,08 )

His most popular moment: minute 2.15 of the video I think: Sporting - Porto, Carlos Secretário (what a joke) passes the ball to Acosta score the goal against Baia, Sporting won that game and wen't 1 point ahead of Porto in that game with 10 games to go, in what would be the title that ended the 17yold wait to retake the title. What a funny moment that was.

    cheers,

Nope, it's part of the contract. Of course, no club would pay that much and Depor can sell him at any prize they want. The thing is the clause with 77Mios speak for the talent and potential that player once had, now they'd be cool with a 3,5 million deal...speaks for itself.

yep. I've read in a Depor forum that "something happened to him on the way".

Seeing that video one regrets, he really had what it takes to be a great striker.

Every La Liga player MUST have a "Min Fee Release Clause" in their contract, so it's no surprise that nearly every player has some ridiculous "min fee amount" in their contract sometimes even 30 times their real value.

Since the club HAS TO accept the bid from another club if they offer that amount and since as a club you don't want to be forced into anything but have the "choice" to accept or reject a bid, you usually set that "Min Fee release clause amount" to at least 2 or 3 times the player's real value and sometimes a really high or ridiculous amount!

So the "$77M min fee release clause amount" thing really isn't worth discussing since it doesn't mean anything in this case and only takes us more 'away' from actual subject by focusing some of the discussion (like it is right now) on the amount itself.

Diego Tristan's story is a real sad one though that I don't feel like talking about right now as he was one of my fav players and it saddens me to even think about or 'remember' how good he was! :|
Perhaps we'll talk about it tomorrow but there is a Depor fan around (whose name escapes me right now but a real good guy) and Gedtillo who might be able to tell you quite a bit more about him as well.

EDIT: remembered the dude's username. It's "Djalminha" 8)

Regarding Pontus Farnerud... somebody already asked me so here's a direct quote from July 3rd.

Man, everybody at Sporting you mean. He's like the worse diver ever. English lads on this forum think the Portuguese national players dive... They have no idea. He's the worse ever.

    Airjoca,

When I say everybody liked Acosta I meant everyone knew Acosta was a decent, honest guy. About diving cut that crap, yeah, he dived just like a lot of other latin players dive. In those days João Vieira Pinto was still at benfica and then came to sporting, do you think anyone ever surpassed João Pinto and Futre as the biggest divers in portuguese history?

PLF and x1m0: thanks on the info, what you say about Tristan is what I had heard, unfortunately.

Acosta and Jardel were the greatest divers ever to play in Portugal. João Pinto is a saint compared to those players...

Mauras, call Paulo Bento and tell him to forget about Tristan, find another Liedson... Cheaper and more effective.

Tristan would probably be even worse for you than Laurent Robert was for us.

Pinigol is a major bluff, I can understand why benfica fans like him Sporting :).

Deivid is the usual "brazilian mistery", a player that delivers across the atlantic but that fails in europe (first in Bordeaux and now at Sporting).

Irureta: gracias por el feedback y feliz cumpleanos de centenario para el Depor, curioso que Depor y Sporting han comenzado en 1906. ;)

I'd love Celtic to sign Diego Tristan but Benfica and Sporting are in the Champions' League this year as well so we don't have that to offer him over those clubs. I think he'd prefer to stay in a 'Latin' country due to the culture and weather, so I doubt he'd go to Celtic over either Portuguese team. :(

He was the 'Pichichi' a few years ago I'm sure (La Liga top scorer), but got injured and when he was fit struggled to adapt to being 'second striker' to Roy Makaay, who was by now the top forward at Deportivo. I'm sure he also fell out with then-manager Irureta.

check the posting Classic.. there's more to Tristan tham meets the eye :).

Also it's starting to look as Sporting interest in Tristan is only a cover for another option in the making. Might be a coup...

Benfica seems out and it's true he prefers to stay near the family but I think Sporting are making a bluff out of this.

The fact that Lendoiro want's to sell him like crazy and doesn't accept a loan is a good hint that Tristan might have other problems that go beyond injuries and managers.

I'm a bit surprised by lack of 'detailed input' from our Spanish or Depor ffriends on this community to give Mauras and Celtic fans and rest all the info they really should know about Diego since it's been a few days already! (About his past & present)

Then again maybe they're avoiding talking much about this due to the same reasons as I mentioned above and why I want to avoid it, myself. (It's not exactly a 'happy' subject after all. :|)

Nonetheless, since Mauras took the time to open this thread and requested insight on him, I feel obligated to tell him at least what I know myself, though not if I can avoid doing so ;). That's why I'll be waiting a day or two more hoping somebody else comes in and tells people of this thread what they should know in which case I'll be happy and my job will be done.

If not though, then I guess I'll reluctantly return to do the job myself.. :/

p.s. Hope you found a bit of info you wanted on Pontus Farnerud from that post and can see he ain't no pretty-boy or doesn't act like one at least. And should he stay away from injuries, he should be a good signing for Sporting since at the very least, he can provide good depth and versatilty which the team will need throughout a long season AND he came on a "Free"!

Jardel's wife destroyed Mario's career. Maybe you know that Jardel's wife was a pornstar. That's why he has psychological problems. He has great performance at Porto and Galatasaray. But, when Lucescu send him to Sporting, he started to fell down. And, As i've seen on TV, he divorced when he's playing for Sporting. Now he's playing for funny teams.

I think Diego Tristan must have same problems.
