Creating a new football game!

There's low cost solutions for nearly everything you mentioned (except actual football licenses), there's engines that already do a great deal of the complex mechanics regarding physics and animations, and even if they're not ideal, custom-built ones are not that rare (the 1 man effort inspired by PES6 that was posted here before, GameplayFootball, had all those built from scratch, in a very ingenious way too, especially the animation system).

It's obviously not reasonable to expect something on the level of complexity of PES/FIFA right from the start, but if the focus is gameplay and there's a constant effort on improving everything else, it's just wrong to say it's "impossible".

We're talking about different levels of quality then. Of course you can invest tons of time with some other passionat fans to recreate something like Pes6. But if you really want to have a competitive product, there's no engine on earth that allows you to do the kind of things you need to properly animate a football game nowadays.

Again, I'm talking about a great football game. There's no point on making a PES6 game nowadays, who's going to play it?

You need motion capture, building very specific-tailored engines to handle animation, collisions and invest on AI. Thousands of hours. Doable by one small group of person without any funding? Well, theoretically yes, but we know it's an illusion.

There's a reason why there are tons of indy games of practically all genres... except sports.

You get games like Banished made by one person. It's done really well on Steam.

Trine and Trine 2. Those were made by 34 members.

That's a lot. What is astonishing is that this game goes for 1.99$ on Steam (bargain much?!)

YouTube - â–º WTF Is... - Trine 2 ? (inc. exclusive non-beta footage)

And yes, it's one of best Indie games out there. Graphics, physics wise it blows all other attempts out of the water (and yeah, it uses Unreal Engine 3 as a base :D).

I would love to have football game with similar level of details/attention. That would need a team 3x as big though.
