Buying a new car - any advice?

Just had my Escort MOT'd and its FAIL'D

Not worth getting the repairs done, so I'm after some new wheels.

Any tips Evo-Webbers? I'm thinking of somewhere like CarGiant or CarCraft - so your horror stories on these please.

Would prefer another Ford just because of the price of repairs etc, but that said, I'm taken by the Kia Cee'd with their 7 year warranty :)

Hit me peeps...

Well Kia's are very good cars now, their reputations are growing by the minute, and the Cee'd has got good reviews from most of the motoring press as far as I can tell.

Probably better for insurance than a Ford as well.

Either way, I'd honestly say going to a dealer for a new car is better than going to Carcraft or something like that. It's a buyers market and the dealers need to sell cars. There are massive bargains to be had on new cars right now.

:ninja chop: (You did say to hit you!)

Are there any other cars you like the look of? As you mentioned the Kia I'm guessing you're looking at similar ones (hatchbacks) like we are?

We're looking at changing our Corsa at the moment, so we've been looking at hatchbacks lately. We were looking at 1-2 year old cars, as it's mainly used for driving to the train station & other short journeys, though depending on what you're after some cars work out cheaper to buy as brand new.

For example, 2 yr old Corsa's are in the 7k range (8.5 brand new), and brand new Hyundais (of similar size) aren't far off. I don't know what the repairs would be like, but I wouldn't have thought it would be as bad as a few years ago...

I upgraded my car 6 months ago from a Civic to a Type R, and would recommend them for a look / drive (as the rear view can out people off), and Honda have a good rep for reliable cars.

The only time we didn't buy through a dealer was for my sister's 1st car (we used Autotrader). It was a N reg Peugeot 106 and had no brakes & crap steering. I'm glad I didn't let her drive it until we had it serviced!

Cheers guys...

I really like the Type R's - be out of my range though I think.

Ideally looking to buy new and upto £11k absolute max - so that does kind of limit what we can get.

The reason I like the Kia's is the warrantly, low(ish!) new price and running cost.

Only really using for short journeys - and I work from home, so its not even gonna be used every day.

I'll keep looking, but running out of time - got 3 days of MOT left!

My advise would be to buy nearly new or a demonstratior and save yourself the hit...

11k should get you a nice motor, or a least a shiny one ;)
Just had a quick look online, and for your price range (or even less) you could get:

Hyundai I30
Peugeot 207 / 208
Vauxhall Astra
Renault Megane
Fiat Punto / Bravo
Ford Focus / Fiesta
Seat Ibiza
Kia Ceed
Mazda 3

Vauxhall & Mazda have good right ups in our house, though I don't know much about the others...

Thanks Jay - Kia have an offer on at the moment of a 'Pro-Ceed' for around 10k.

Gonna go have a look at them tonight.

Does it have to be brand new pboreham, unless I was buying a bigger car you can get some fantastic savings on some very low mileage cars less than a year old and given some warranties run to 7 years now, there is no issues...?

Just wanted to avoid any issues, but no, doesnt HAVE to be new... just think I could drive a better bargain on a new car than used?

Any good places to look - I'm preferring main dealerships rather than smaller independents...

The best bet is to do as you are and shop around, there is a lot of nearly new stock out there if you're not wanting top specs and some great bargains to barter on, my mate got nearly 6k off a 58 Mondeo with less that 2k and some extra kit...

Hmmmmm... cheers Nick... I'm gonna go car hunting tonight - will report back!

Good luck and remember the price on the sticker is a starting point... :D

You're right about that. When I bought my CTR I played a couple of dealers off each other and got a really good deal.

Some dealers also honour internet prices, so might be worth printing some off and taking them with you.

Not looking forward to this to be honest! I've always brought cheapy 2nd hand cars from shitty dealers.

Dealing with the big(ger) boys now!

You'll be fine. Let us know how you get on :)
Let them know you're just looking & researching other cars. They usually try to pressure you into a deal straight away, but if you're not ready don't be afraid to walk away, especially if you're not 100% happy with what they're offering.

Righto... not a big update for now. Went to the Kia showroom and definitely think that is the way we are gonna go. The 7 year warranty for what we can afford is too good to pass on.

Just absolutely dead confused about their financing options.

Anyways, going back tomorrow for a test drive :)

Urgh! Feel like throwing up!!!

Didnt sleep last night thinking about it and have been at the garage since 2pm.

I am now the new owner of a Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDi LS on a '57' plate (all mumbo-jumbo to me!). Black, cruise-control, air-con, alloys, iPod connectivity, CD player all electric windows and 6 years warranty.

Lovely, I mean REALLY lovely car to drive, so responsive, even in 5th it had a shit load of power left and I was doing 80+ without even thinking in the test drive - not sure that went down well!

Got £500 off of it in the end with some (shit) bargaining, so please, no "you should not have paid that" comments etc... got it for £9,495 in the end.

So there you go, how to spunk £10k in the blink of an eye. I'm off for a little cry now...

Wow, cruise control! Sexiiee stuff! My Dad's car has got it and it's bloody brilliant, didn't touch the pedals at all on the M25 last Monday night coming home from Winchester :)).

Post a piccy Pboreham :)).

Well, this is how much I know about cars... we went to look at the black one (after initially taking an exactly the same spec White version out) and he said, "oh, this one has cruise control as well" - I was like "oh cool, good"

Whispered to my Dad, "whats that then?"

I'm picking it up Tuesday, so I'll get some pics then for sure!

Dead excited now, its a really nice car. I used to have a reasonably new 206 years ago (till a lorry decided to reshape it into a cube) and that was nice, but this is so much better.

Congratulations mate.

Glad you went for the Cee'd, they look like a really nice car, simple but effective styling and a good bunch of kit on every model.

Enjoy it.

Nice one, enjoy bud, just remember cruising around with the stereo on full blast with your windows down, only gets 13 year old boys moist so resist...

Ha! Leather back driving gloves, a box of mints and Radio 4 more like it!

You're just giving Gary Glitter ideas here, I'm just waiting to see him cruising down the local high street in a tricked out Saxo with a bit of drum and bass on. :CONFUSE:

seriously looking into used porsche cayenne's at the moment, 2003 or 2004 model with around 90-100k km run starting at 23.000€. strong, reasonable price and a big car. brilliant for the autobahn over here. :D

Wow! Very nice OPM! I'd love to go on the autobahn with a nice car! It must be mental .
