Adding and removing players to the wall...

The manual says,

Hold down the button and press up on the d pad to add more players to the wall. To reduce this number, hold down the button and press down on the d pad.

I do what the manual says yet nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong?

Has anyone actually seen it happen?
