The Retrogaming Thread! [8-bit/16-bit/32-bit/64-bit]

Never played it man! The only ones I've played are SNES' Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium, and PS2's Fire Pro Wrestling Returns! Now I might get a GBA emulator just for Fire Pro series! (I had an emulator but forgot to transfer ir to my new computer). Which one of the GBA games would you recommend to try first?
FPW2 is essentially the same as FPW1 but with more moves so I’d say Fire Pro Wrestling 2 is the way to go.
The best thing about it is setting the match to “showman” style and then it gives you a rating percentage based on the quality of your match”. Note that the idea is not to necessarily win the match but to put on a show for the crowd. A good way to do this is let your opponent kick out at the very last micro second by releasing them with the A button if I remember right. You’ll notice the crowd start to get louder and louder until they’re going crazy. That’s when you know it’s time to end the match. So it’s similar to real pro wrestling it this sense.
Then you could try the Japanese version if managing a federation interests you.
I can’t remember whether lockup timings are the same as the snes. On GBA you have to be exact and instant otherwise you’ll miss the lockup grapple chance.

Here’s the basic controls I remember:

B = weak attack

A = medium strength attack

A+B = strong attack

B in lockup = weak attack (with direction performs alternative moves)

A in lockup = medium strength attack (with direction performs alternative moves)

A+B in lockup = Strong attack (with direction performs alternative moves)

L trigger = recover

L trigger in lockup = Front face headlock
which can then be turned into other moves.

R = Run

R in lockup = Irish whip

Then there’s many more basic controls like climbing the ropes or running up the turnbuckle if the wrestler has that ability.
Arial attacks from the turnbuckle, Suicide dives to the outside, apron to inside arial attacks like springboard attacks etc etc etc

I’d go into the edit mode just to see how many unique moves there are too. I think it was about 1500 different moves on FPW2.

Anyway have fun!

@PES4eva That's really useful man, thanks! I've been playing a bit of the Fire Wrestling Returns PS2 game, and I'm having a tough time with level 4 (the default), the grappling has to be really exact! So I've decided to go down to level 2 slowly move my way up. I love the insane customization of this franchise, and I will definitely check out FPW2 like you mentioned.. That button guide is really helpful! :BSCARF: :RSCARF:

No problem.
On PS2 fire pro wrestling returns, the timing of the button press is slightly delayed. If you do it the moment you lockup you won’t win the lockup. You need to do it a micro second after lockup if I remember.

Growing up, that was the one game that you just so badly wanted from this era? But as kids, you just didn’t have the money to just go out and buy it.

I can think of one for me - WWF Royal Rumble on SNES. Xmas seemed to take forever to arrive! I was not disappointed on Xmas day. I loved it.

Side note - I only recently learnt that there were often Roster differences between the SNES and MegaDrive WWF games. The MegaDrive seems to get the better package.
I had it on megadrive, great memories !

Never played it! Haha this looks a a bit like SNES Pilotwings! I find these simulators interesting.. At first it might seem like the lack of "traditional enemies" would be a bit strange, but just flying around (and in this case doing tricks on a football field) can also be rewarding and in a sense, relaxing! Haven't really played a lot of these simulators, but this one definitely looks like it would be fun! :)

It’s not just flying around doing tricks. That was just a sample from the game. You have to do set tasks on every level. Eg: on one of the early levels you have to land as close as you can to the bullseye and on another round you have to shoot so many balloons etc and when you fail you’ve got the most sarcastic commentator telling you how bad you are at the game 😂

heheh yeah I figured that was just part of a larger game.. :TU: so it's quite similar to Pilotwings then, where you have a lot of missions. Looks like fun!

I guess so yeah. I was packing up some stuff earlier and found some old games I forgot about and one of them was RC Stunt Copter for PS1. It’s what got me to post it lol
I’ve found a lot of games that look like generic crap and turn out to be great games. Of course a lot of them are also generic crap 😂

@Shales Here's another WWF game I really liked, perhaps my favorite WWF game of all time: Wrestlemania 2000 for N64! Man, I played so much of this game with friends, we created likenesses of ourselves, complete with entrance songs, outfits, moves.. The customization was insane! Also, I was a Rock fan so when I was playing by myself, I would do a best of 5 against Stone Cold Steve Austin, and man it was usually either 3-2 for myself or 2-3 for the CPU. The difficulty was crazy. One thing I loved about this game was that moreso than health, you had an "attitude" bar, which increased and decreased due to various factors (momentum could switch on a dime), so that was really cool. Highly recommended! :)

Mine was WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role on PSX. Great game. Me & my friends loved playing this, especially the rumble,.

Short story there used to be a glitch (I tried to search the info online but found nothing). It's when My Create-A-Superstar became undefeated during season mode. Usually your CAS is always loses but mine was undefeated, never loses especially when skipping the match. I didn't know how i do it back then & tried to recreated it but never successful.

That’s exactly what it is. A parody of Gradius and it’s frikin glorious 😁

I’ve never even heard of Antarctic adventures but yeah it clear they got some inspiration from Alfonzo (googled it) for Pentaro in Parodius.

Not a fan of Disney games in general, but I think SNES' Aladdin is really fun! Great gameplay, with very responsive controls, colorful graphics and great soundtrack which is faithful to the movie, and appropriately challenging, tough enough to give you a stiff challenge, but not so much to be frustrating. I think it has all the elements of a classic platformer, run and jump action, use of several items, colorful enemies, the stages and scenarios have tons of personality, and pretty much active-reactive gameplay which keeps you on your toes! Great to play if you have a few hours to spare (or days, if it takes you longer to beat it, it is no cakewalk)! Bonus: You get to use the magic carpet!

Aladdin does get all the praise when it comes to 16bit Disney games but I always preferred the Lion King. It’s may favourite Disney movie so that would probably explain why. Hakuna matata!

The Lion King is a great game too, a bit on the difficult side though! That second stage alone (can't wait to be king) with the giraffes and elephants is crazy hahah.. I remember I got to one of the stages where Simba is already an adult, but was never able to beat the game. Should give it a try again soon! :TU:

I’m pretty good at it. I played it a LOT as a kid. The monkeys are pretty easy if you know which ones to roar at. You do know that you have to roar at them to get them to face different ways right? 😁

When you get to the end to fight Scar:

instead of slashing him, lure him to the edge and you can sling him over the edge of the cliff like on the movie and win

Yeah of course. I beat that stage after many tries, but when I got to the Adult Simba part, there was one stage (I can't remember which one), where I just got stuck hahah.. I picked it up on emulator years later and still couldn't get to Scar. Will try again soon though!

Based on @PES4eva's recommendation, I've been playing a lot of "fightcade", if you guys are familiar with it, it's a PC application which lets you play retro games online against other players.. I've been on a Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition binge! (Trying to move up my rankings, but right now I can't seem to get past the "D" grade, so many good players there).. Even though I am more of an SNK fan (especially Samurai Shodown), playing the classic Street Fighter has brought back so many memories, man I thought I was good at the game but playing online I realize that there are thousands maybe millions of incredible players. :LMAO:

BLANKA Forever!!

You can download fightcade here: https://www.fightcade.com/ :TU: The catalog is huge, not only fighting games but pretty much any retro game you can think of! You can either play online, co-op or solo (practice mode).

Just to add to this, it lists all available roms (which is pretty much everything) and only downloads a single game when you play it so you don’t have to download entire rom sets. Which is obviously a bonus.

You can download entire Rom sets but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want to wait days and days!

Yeah guys told me about what to download so ROMs auto download when you enter a game room, awesome.

Played a guy at Super Superkickers 3 or whatever it's called, didn't know any of the buttons, lost 1-0, but it's was fun!

All it's missing is PS1 games, then I play ISS Pro Evo 1 and 2 online. Guess maybe they'll add in future?

That'd be awesome if they did! Right now it is more geared towards Arcade/16 and 32 bit games.. Haven't checked if N64 games are available!

I think PS1 games might be a bit harder to encode, but hopefully that'll be the case!

Been also playing King of Dragons, one of my favorite games ever!! (Mainly single mode since it is a bit hard to find online co-op, but still really fun).. :TU:

You could always play ISS Deluxe Super Nintendo Version. Or sensible Soccer. Both are better than Super Sidekicks.

Definitely need to get on this at some point soon, love a bit of SF2. Still got an xbox 360 fight stick stashed away just for this type of game :D

I like fight sticks and they do look great but I find that im a little bit better with a good D-Pad (not that I’m great at fighting games in the first place but I still enjoy them. KOF98 is my all time fave)

Keeping it Sega for a second, this is a top game on Master System. Probably not very well known outside of Europe. Quite popular in the UK and France (which is where I believe it originates).
Before my time but a friend of mine had a master system so we used to play it quite often:

Are you talking about the Asterix franchise or the specific game? Well the franchise, the comic basically comes from France as you correctly said, and it is pretty popullar in a lot European countries. France (original), Greece, Germany, Belgium, Italy possibly, Spain, Portugal, Holland.

Imagine in Greece, it is the only comic i know, that it was published in 4 versions, the common Greek dialect, in ancient Greek and 2 local dialects Pontic and Cretab. That has never happened for any other comic.

Well besides the comic, i think the games are also well appreciated. I think the recent Switch Asterix Slap'em all platform is very amuzing.

Now on topic, i loved a lot the SNES Asterix & Obelix, almost Nintendo Exclusive by Infogrames (GB, GBC, SNES and PC). It was my second game for SNES and until today i believe it was very difficult platform. It had some side-scrolling and bottom-up scrolling stages, some mini games like Olympic games, rugby in the act in Britain, etc.

I swear this game is not suitable for kids with such difficulty! I have never completed it, and if i ever do, i will use save states on an emulator.

The mini games:

Olympic Games

Rugby match
