WTF? I just played an online game and the guy I played went Barca, His squad icluded Terry, Ronaldo, Ibrahimovic, Pirlo, Torres, Fabregas, Frey & Casillas. How is this possible?
I'm getting one person a week emailing me about this at FIFASoccerBlog, it's unbelievable. No idea how it's done but more and more people seem to be doing it.

It was an unranked match because I was trying out everything on manual except shooting (semi). I played pretty well but lost 4 - 1 in the end.
Will have to do a custom search next time to make sure I'm playing a gainst someone with same setup.
Anyway, even if the game was unranked, these superstar squads shouldn't happen. Personally, I don't understand why people would do this. I wouldn't want to play as a team that doesn't reflect their squad in real life. It wouldn't interest me having Rooney & Ronaldo at Liverpool, for example. Each to their own though.

Enjoying playing with lower league teams, it seems to play a better game than the perfect passing Prem and a like, keepers seem more real too...

I dont know if anyone has posted this but I have just installed FIFA 09 on my hard drive with the new M$ dash (doesnt support LIVE until 19th Novemeber but im not too bothered)

EA servers are NOT coping as well with this title, compared to 1 vs 1 Fifa 08.

Hopefully they might add a couple of new servers soon.

Its actually like Euro 08 with me...when you play someone else from the UK,it lags pretty awful at times.

Am I the only one that complains about the ref not calling fouls in your favor? In 20+games I can count the fouls I recieved on one hand. This is not realistic...especially when the fouls are clear. Perhaps I have o play on he easiest level to be fouled? Nuts! Also, lob passes are always cut off by the D which is ridiculous. In real life its easy to lob pass to teamates

That is weird, as if anything, I find that CPU can play a little TOO undisciplined sometimes. They nearly almost always get a card every game I play, and at least 4-5 fouls a game. This is on World Class. Which version are you playing? From my limited experience with PS3 version, I find that I got fouled a lot less on it, especially if I used the D-pad (where CPU fouls went down to zero a game for some reason). With my 360 version fouls are pretty commonplace.

If this is happening to you on 360 version, then maybe it just comes down to playing style, I can't say.

I'm finding the old free kick every touch on AI and getting squat diddly when the AI hacks you down a bit tedious to say the least too Oh and three seasons in and just two one week injuries also... Bah!!

Agreed. The AI are quite dirty on World Class. A few times on breakaways they just go in from behind with the last man and get a straight red. I also get a fair amount of penalties.

I get loads of instances when the guy who is receiving a through ball or a ball over the top will look around and kind of jog backwards instead of just running on as I'm asking, thus giving the defence, who don't do this time to catch up.
This happens a lot of the time, will it sort this out? I just assumed it was another little "help/cheat" for the AI... ;)

Definitely a PS3 thing, I've had three CPU players sent off in three games on the 360. As someone has already said, for me, there's too many CPU players getting cards. And I've only seen the "sidestepping"/through-ball bug three times in 100-200 games. Weeeeeeird.

Yes, PS3. Anyone who plays on Legendary or World class diff. will agree with me. You cannot come near CPU or it's an automatic whistle. But even the slightest touch will get your player carded, sent off. :Y1

I've scored two goals while getting fouled in the box that get called back for penalties... I missed both pens...

I play on PS3 and get quite a few fouls called for me. However, I have noticed that when I am one on one with the keeper I sometimes get shoved over from behind.

Was playing as Leeds in MM against Newcastle in the FA cup. I had 2 red cards and they had one red card as well as tons of yellows.

In BAP Seasons, particularly in the reserves, I found the AI to be really dirty on World Class, constantly lunging into tackles late, hacking people down etc. There is usually about 3 or 4 yellows a game, and usually a red card every other game. There was one match where they had three red cards! They did try and patch it up a bit by sacrificing a striker and a midfielder though.

I can't say about modes where you control the whole team (I have not played many of those games) but in BAP Seasons there are loads of fouls and cards.

The refereeing is pretty bad sometimes though, others have mentioned why. I also think the offside decisions are far too prescise - your player can look level with the defender when the ball is played, but is given offside.
I think the timing of the replay is off as well - sometimes the red line (indicating the attacker) is further from the goal than the yellow line (indicating the last defender)!
There should be some margin for error in those decisions, it simply doesn't simulate real life offside decisions made by humans. I suppose no game will ever be able to replicate human decisions realistically.

I don't really get what's going on, I still can't get any wins to actually get recorded. I had won like 5 straight games, the last one the guy didn't even quit, and I still didn't get credited with a win. Got credited with a loss today though. What is the deal with this???

the crabwalking is a comom thing on the ps3...i see it about 4 ou 5 times everygame, and its annoyng becasue it happens mostly on very important moments, like through balls...

and as it has been said, the 360 doesnt have this issue.

I'm stucked between slow and normal. Can't decide. Just curious what most of you use. I use semi for passing and shooting and everything else on manual with difficulty on world class. It seems a bit too fast on normal so I use slow most of the time. There are some things that I like better with normal speed though. :THINK:

Wish I'd had my PS3 hooked up last night, scored a freak halfway line goal in a 2 v AI, MM with Arsenal v Liverpool.
They cleared their lines and the ball was hoofed out to the far edge of the halfway line, Fabregas was out there and TBH I went to head the ball back into the mix but miss timed it and hit the ball with long pass pretty much full on just as it bounced. It shot up with bend and dip, the keeper was just outside his six yard box, and still looked to have it covered all the way up to him crashing into the post and the ball hitting the bar and bouncing in... :P

It needs looking at TBH I think a team averages about 12-15 a season, EA use it as an AI aid...

When you play football ,hitting the post sometimes is a satisfying specially on long range shots but here it's just pain really.
Scoring headers is already tough (due to jostling and timing) ,the few times I got them spot on I hit the damn crossbar (6 times in the last 10 days)

I hope the patch fixes the FK taker bug. It happens to me all the time when one of my players is fouled and the wrong person is lined up to take the FK. e.g. Gareth Bale and David Bentley take all my FK's and corners but on several occasions (depending on what side of the pitch the foul occurs ) Lennon, Jenas or Hutton are set to take the FK.

well suprise suprise, after waiting in for a whole day, re-aranging work and getting my daughter picked up from school my ps3 NEVER turned up. It was sent to the wrong depot. So now i have to wait til Tuesday. These people think that everyone is sitting at home raking in their dole cheques. That will be 2 weeks without Fifa09. Do you 360'rs have any problem with AI free kicks in MM, just about every game on Pro and above I get hardly any fouls given against AI and almost zealous fouls given against me. The AI gets away with murder nearly every game...

I've only seen it in videos but never in my own games. I only play BAPS and I have never had any crabwalking and I have never seen the cpu players done it either. And like I said I've seen videos of it so I know for a fact that it has never happened to me.

The more I play this game the more I hate 8 directions. Is it just me or when running towards the goal you want to change direction a little and the fucking player turns like 45 degrees while running, resulting in losing control of the ball because he's trying to change to much direction? Really pisses me of because often you might be a little to much at the side and the only way to make the player shoot with the "inner" foot is to do a little directional change. Sadly enough I don't think it will be any different in 2010. Just like they will keep the scripted only one player from each time can be locked on to the ball. This might kind of work for single player but it brakes the game in the BAP modes.

Also what I would like to see is a discussion about the controls. Is today's controls (Same as PES has) really the best we can have? NHL 09 completely changed their controls so that the right analogue stick controls the players stick (and body checks) and you skate with the left. So that the normal buttons is used way less often. This might seem natural because you can simulate the stick movement pretty good, but still, couldn't FIFA come up with a better control scheme? EA Skate to the same, they let the users use the sticks and not the buttons like you did in the other skate game.

I don't know what a new control scheme would look like but it would be interesting to see what people can come up with. Playing with the sticks and shoulder buttons make the controls so much more satisfying, because your right thumb don't have to change position very often, anyone who played the NHL series would probably agree. You could probably still have like sliding tackles on a button but somehow control the foot action with only the right stick in combo with shoulder buttons. I don't know I just don't think we are using the full potential of the controller.

It happens to defenders as well on chipped through balls, making that tactic too easy.

The full power long ball at goal from kick off results in a goal or very nearly a goal a lot of the time. The keeper walks backwards while the ball is in the air, and sometimes he walks too far back and when he gets the ball he's over the line. It looks funny and made us laugh but it's a terrible bug.

Closing down seems much more effective (too effective) in human v human matches.

The graphics don't seem as polished, and there are slowdowns in a crowded area and on goal kicks sometimes.

The menus are laggy and everything seems to take a long time to load and navigating the menus is slower.

The FIWC Stadium is nice, with the official adboards.

I didn't see any other big differences, but I am of the opinion that the Xbox 360 version is the superior version in the way it plays and performs.

The graphics don't seem as polished, and there are slowdowns in a crowded area and on goal kicks sometimes.

The menus are laggy and everything seems to take a long time to load and navigating the menus is slower.

The FIWC Stadium is nice, with the official adboards.

I didn't see any other big differences, but I am of the opinion that the Xbox 360 version is the superior version in the way it plays and performs.

Most, if not , all, cross platform games are better on the 360...at least according to reviews. I still believe the 360 is better suited for gaming than the PS3. And all these games are proving it. And yes, the PS3 has been around long enough. No more excuses or I'll :R1 you!

Assisted should be done away with in all football games forever - you wouldn't have a first-person shooter online with auto-aim, you wouldn't play a flight simulator with auto-pilot etc. It's the same thing really, there's no football brain or anything required with assisted, it's a joke.

Just played some cuntlord online who was clearly on assisted, all he did was pass, pass, pass, then pretty much wherever he was with Anelka he would just shoot, and 9/10 it's on target, and 7/10 it goes in. It's really pathetic.

Just imagine in Rainbow Six online if, as soon as you see an enemy your crosshairs automatically focus straight on their head, all you have to do it press the trigger and they're dead and you get a kill. This for me is the equivalent of assisted passing and shooting in FIFA.

The main bug on my game is the crabwalking (PS3) other than that everything seems the same as the 360 version. The patch will sort out that issue anyway.

Yesterday I played a match, in manager mode, Everton 0-2 Tottenham.

Two red cards to Everton, min 56 direct red card, a ultimate player´s foul, and double yellow, min 75.

Everton with the first red card changed Yakubu by Lesscot. defensive change. I scored 0-1 Bent.

After second red card, they attack with manyy players, and Lennon scored in a great contra-attack.

I've gone off this a little now. Playing on 360 its just become a little tedious. I just realized what crab walking is... I think I thought it was just some crappy AI cheat, your player backing off the ball in crucial situations... not acceptable.

My manager mode is going well, playing as Grimbsy Town and sitting on top of League 2 but the monotony of the mode is deal breaking, after playing an entire season with zero weather implementation and the AI not touching their roster, I've just become uninterested. Rutter has done a great job in a lot of areas with this game but he really needs his butt kicked by Peter Moore for the travesty that is Manager Mode. I understand it was not a priority this year but all it needed was some simple tweaks and we would of been happy to wait until next year for a more advanced version, but they barely even touched the code. How hard could it be to introduce the weather that is in BAP? To get some kind of fatigue and roster rotation system for the AI?

Its a great game but I won't be playing again until they finally patch it. Then I'll give it another chance. For now I'm hooked on Madden 09, its brilliant.

You know, I had a chance to play ALOT this weekend and was coming online to write about the same thing this morning. I am absolutely BORED with this game already and it's only been a month.

MM is exactly the same as last year but with improved gameplay. That is not enough for me at all. Why can't there be weather in MM? It's absolutely ridiculous that is wasn't added and totally kills the whole experience for me as I was so excited about the weather. I have tried BAPS and find it too tedious to control ONE player and get marked off ratings wise for everything I do. Let me play how I want to play - if I want to cherry pick for a goal don't mark me off for not defending someone.

In all, I am over this game and it's really sad. The crabwalking thing sucks, but that alone hasn't killed the game for me. It's the lack of anything NEW in the one mode I have loved for years. I have even played with lower division teams... Won League 1 and the Paint Trophy, 2nd in Cola Championship next year, and already bored now that I am in the EPL. Ii went up in difficulty as well and it became AI god mode.

Blah, so disappointing.

manual is too hard especial on a joypad. racing on fully manual with a steering wheel is not the same as playing fifa09 on manual. imo to play full on manual, the device u use to play the game needs to help in that realism otherwise it can be a pain for some people.

for example: i never play racing games on manual using a joypad. its just too hard and crap but on my logitech g25 steering wheel i play on full on manual WITH the clutch on and find it easier then playing auto on a control pad

I play on semi, for the ones I can and asisted for those I can't change to semi. Tried manual but it's way too sensitive. At least for me. Semi works out fine.

Seriously, as far as a business move goes, you are absolutely correct. This year they marketed online and BAPS and Adidas Live season or whatever. Online IS where everything is going so it makes sense for them dollars wise. They have tweaked some things in MM though - like teams picking up free transfers and more all around transfers it seems. They also added all of the stadiums that they did. Those were GOOD things that should be pointed out. And obviously, the gameplay is light years better than '08.

However... and I bet you are right - next year will be the "new" and "improved" Manager Mode. Remember when it first came out years ago? Has anything even really changed to it?

I've always wondered why out of all sports games, football/soccer is the ONLY sports game never to get any sort of sliders (besides speed... I think a few earlier FIFA/WE games have had those and FIFA right now has it to an extent)... doesn't make any sense, as it is such an easy thing to include and it would definitely cut down on a lot of complaints (offline anyway).

God yes! I'm a huge fan of 95% of 2K sports games and they all have sliders. If you feel a particular part of the game is unbalanced then you just adjust it. They literally have a slider for just about anything. MLB 2K8 was an absolute dog of a game turned into a rather nice sim with some great sliders. For me at least.

Thats definatly an acceptable argument, but the gameplay on mlb 2k as an overall is all full of little bugs, fielding is horrible, not to mention the wacky animations as a hole. Also, baseball, diferently from football is a game of stats, and to get realistic stats on 2k u would have to spend 4 months tweaking sliders lmao
i would suggest any Wii baseball game for a person that like to mimic the actions of pitch and hit.

said that, im not implyng the show is a perfect game by no means...for a start it doenst have real colisions effects(although thats not completly necessary in a baseball game) , the hitting window is so huge that after a while u start getting over 12 hits every game without concetrating a bit...and the sliders on the show dont work properly so u cant fix that, which will blow your stats on the long run.
But i love that game, i think mainly cause everything is so smooth specially animations(the transition animations are a piece of art alone)and grafics..on the sound aspect the game is amazing too, they have a incredible play by play that makes u really feel the comentators are wacthing you play.

as far as i know the best baseball game as a hole is that jaanese game that players dont evan have arms, in america they released it as MLB power pros(only Wii and PS2) i have never played it, but ive heard on operation sports it has definatly the most complete engine to produce real stats sheets and that after a while u evan start loving that kind of gfx and animations.

also to sum up, i think sliders are good, but they need to be one or two...

Keeps forgetting that I've inputted my code, so I have to do it again, and again, and again.

Plus the fact, PSN appears to have forgotten my card details, and won't let me input new ones.

Oh and FIFA's just gone straight from a game to the home screen without warning, without quitting the game from a controller or my bluetooth remote.

I've been playing with manual passing recently on ALL modes, (yes, even online, and on Clubs) and have been getting much better at it I think.

I have been winning the majority of my matches online (only unranked, ranked = cunt fest) and I have been playing some really nice football and scoring some great goals.
I am going to keep using manual all the time now, I enjoy the game much more with it.

Tonight I scored one of my best goals online with Leverkusen - I passed it round the defence and midfield neatly, then spotted Barnetta making a run into space on the wing, I then picked him out with a perfectly weighted manual long ball, played a one-two with to get past the full back and then played a deep cross to Kießling who knocks it down right into the path of the on-rushing Helmes who smacks the volley into the near top corner from about 10 yards.

Awesome goal, awesome game.

Sometimes playing the game online is so frustrating. For one, its of course impossible to control all the players on the field at once. But is it really that hard to program the players to do a basic job when you are not in control. Why are your players programmed to just be an empty shell unless you control them for defense. Its so frustrating to watch the opposing players to run right through them as they stand there just because, also another flaw, I try to switch players manually, and the game wont let me because it is stuck in an animation. Honestly, is it that hard to let me switch players when I hit the damn button to switch players, i dont give a fuck about an animation, just give me the player i want. And even when it does give me a player, it will be a player who is not even closest to the ball there by fucking me again when I expecting the player in front of the ball to get chosen.

How does this stuff make it through testing! how i ask.

Hmm seem to have a lot more keeper errors in this than 08, quite a few times the keeper has moved away from the ball or just not reacted to over hit through balls etc. Had three goals last night all from my keeper not reacting to loose balls near him and you could not get control of him either...

The only way to improve the game is get feedback back to EA, so they can sort things out in either a patch or for the next release.
There are plenty of positive posts in here and I'm playing the thing for around 20 hours a week, if I didn't like it I wouldn't be playing it, I don't see finding bugs and errors as nitpicking, the wrong coloured boots or not having the right sweatbands maybe...

I have always wondered who does the commentary on the Japanese version. If the Japanese version was not released so long after the Asian I would get it just to test it out.

Nope when you select commentry language in your settings you either pick english or english 2 (new one). No option to random them up

since they only gave everton 2 kits, they should have made the 3rd kit instead of the 2nd for everton... in real life i think they wont be wearing that white 2nd kit in many macthes, if any... while the 3rd kit was already used twice and will be used in every macth away against blue teams.

For anyone thinking about getting the "English Commentary Pack 2", DONT WASTE YOUR POINTS.
The commentary is dire, and has just been lifted from the Euro 2008 game.
Each game starts with "this international game", even when you are playing premiership.
There are hardly any player names said and the whole thing is lifeless and generic, like Pro EVO's commentary.

400 points for something that doesn't even say the right stuff?!?! EA have just gone right down in my estimations after this (not that I had a high opinion of them anyway)
I want my frickin' points back!!!

If it's what I think it is, it's when you're running straight (especially if in a race with the last defender) after a long ball or something has been aimed at you, and then the player will inexplicably start walking sideways for no reason.

It's fucking annoying and I would've thought they'd have fixed it in 08 with a patch, so to have it in 09 is really bad.

If they are free, i'll probably get one or two of the foreign commentaries, I might even understand some of the French/Spanish commentary and it would add a better atmosphere to games played in the stadia of their nation.

Sod paying for the English commentary if all they've done is lift it out of Euro 2008 without adding to/fixing it to making it more relevant to FIFA. Hopefully the ability to have more than one set of commentators available to switch through in-game means that in future versions we get a few different commentary teams.

I know nobody here probably played it, but Brian Lara International Cricket 2005 had a few different commentators, and they would be selected randomly before the match. It made it a lot less repetitive, hopefully football games do that soon.

One of the old FIFA games did something similar I'm sure, possibly World Cup 98, but I can't remember. They had all the BBC commentary team on there minus Alan Hansen (I miss the BBC guys being in FIFA, I can't stand the Sky Sports guys). There was Des Lynam, Gary Lineker, John Motson, Mark Lawrenson, and Chris Waddle as well I think.

They even had Kenneth Wolstenholme in doing the "classic match" commentary. England 66 v West Germany 66, Kenneth Wolstenholme commentating, the screen even turned black and white. Brilliant.

We are pleased to announce a game update for FIFA 09 on Xbox360 and PS3, hopefully arriving sometime next week. In line with community feedback, we have spent time improving the gameplay experience and addressed the following problems:


- Fixed side-stepping issue on lofted through balls
Fixing the issue where a player sidesteps when trying to control a lofted through ball instead of running straight onto it and controlling it, was a top priority for the EAC development team. We’re happy to say that the team at EAC has been able to fix this problem and it will be included in the game update.

- Improved advantage rule: fixed goals being called back for free kicks
There was a problem in the advantage rule whereby the referee would call back a goal if it was scored when the advantage was being played. Instead the referee would give a FK or a PK to the fouled player. This issue has been resolved in the game update. Goals that are going in when a foul is committed will count when they score.

- Improved number assigning in Manager Mode
When signing a player in Manager Mode the player now makes a more sensible decision, based on this position, on which number he would like, whereas previously he would always take the number 2.

- Allowed up to 8 user-controlled teams in Tournament Mode
After installing the game update it will be possible to play in Tournament Mode with up to 8 user-controlled teams. This gives the option to host bigger events with your friends to compete in offline-tournaments. Have fun!

- Removed ability to bring custom teams into Online ranked matches
Everybody has the option to transfer players in his favorite team and create his own custom dream team. This is an option we want to offer everybody to enjoy the feeling of creating own teams and play matches online or offline. When it comes to ranked competitive online matches we think only real teams should compete against each other to keep everybody’s chances even. So with the update it is no longer possible to enter a ranked match with a custom created team. Very old bug that dates back to Fifa06 on PS2, seems they don't care about it. It's weird cos I've played in League 2 and you have league matches, FA Cup matches, Carling Cup matches, Autoglass Cup matches and I never had a single fixture clash, so why can't they do the same for when you're in the Premiership?

I'm sad to see that they didn't fix the bug in BAPS where all of the sudden you can only recieve bad rates and not good ones (and I'm not talking about when you already have a high rating, because then you'll obviously not get plus points for every pass). There have only been a couple of threads about that on the official forum so I don't even think they know about that bug, because it would probably be easy to fix.

That bug is even worse in multiplayer BAPS, I seriously think they forgot to play test that part of the game.

Edit: The advantage rule is probably the only one that I will notice since I only play baps, still nice to see that they actually listen to people even if they don't have time to fix everything.

One thing that's a bit hard to do is letting go of RT and immediately taking control of the player in the box with LT. You have to make this exchange fast...when done right, you can really take control of the player in the box and hit RT for a powerful, on the run, header.

I also discovered that you add the curve to crosses by starting holding for example 3 o'clock and "roll" to 12 o'clock to make the ball curve to that position. If only pressing cross and holding up you'll get a cross without curve. What's good with the curved ones that you can get more topspin so they'll get a bit harder but more control than double tapped crosses.

People probably already knows that this is how curved crosses work but I didn't before so maybe someone will have use of this info. Also if the player has low curve attribute the ball obviously wont curve that much.

I would have loved to see that curved through balls would work this way too but as far as I know it doesn't. So if I ran right I would hold down through ball button, start aiming right (3 o'clock) and roll the stick to 2 o'clock to make the ball have a right to left curl on it.

I also discovered that you add the curve to crosses by starting holding for example 3 o'clock and "roll" to 12 o'clock to make the ball curve to that position. If only pressing cross and holding up you'll get a cross without curve. Correct, that's how I curve my crosses/free-kicks as well.

Please, in offline mode, i play with low high camera tele. In online mode i can choose this camera or it´s always the same.

it seems to keep my camera settings when going online.

The biggest thing I have found in the game is quick tactics and their settings they can make a big difference...

Ive missed the formation change in quick tactics though. I was under the impression that this would be linked but I still have to change it manually in the pauze/management page. One fo the elements that I really liked in PES (even though after two weeks I didnt need it anymore) was being able to have your standard setup and be able to go to attacking mentality and formation by setting it up for X and [] or go ultra defensive with O and /\. From what I have found I can only adjust the tactics and that the formation is always the same. Something to add for the next game.

Yeah that is annoying, also why can you compare your own players but not future transfer buys? why one not the other...

Also, they really should make the teammanagement page a single player version and just use the current one for multiplayer. What is the point in seeing a "ready" across half the screen?

Anyone else having problems with Xbox Live disconnecting on FIFA09 this afternoon. First off my game took ages to load, then I noticed that the option to play Champions of Gaming (think that's what it's called) was missing. Got disconnected from Xbox Live, restarted the xbox, took ages to load FIFA again but this time Champions of Gaming option was back, got disconected from Xbox Live again. Loaded again, Champions of Gaming gone again, got disconnected again. GAVE UP!!
Wonder if they are doing something with Champions of Gaming mode or maybe putting the patch up?

can someone give me some pointers on manual shooting please..it just seems to go well wide every time and always seems to go in a straight line even when pressing R1. On semi it would bend to near the bottom corner...lob pass ive mastered and through pass ive mastered..my crossing is slightly improving but shooting is really really hard and i rarely get it on target
